WHY MIT-ID BUILD SHELBY COBRA 427 AS A CLASSROOM PROJECT?
TRANSPORTATION DESIGN DEPARTMENT OF MIT INSTITUTE OF DESIGN HAS SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETED A PROJECT ON DESIGN AND FABRICATION OF A FULL SCALE AND FULLY FUNCTIONAL PROTOTYPE OF CAR CALLED "SHELBY COBRA 427"
THIS EXERCISE WAS TAKEN UP TO DEVELOP CAPABILITIES IN BUILDING LIFE SCALE FUNCTIONAL PROTOTYPES, EXPOSURE TO STUDENTS AND GENERATE NEW KNOWLEDGE-BASE.
THE CHOSEN MODEL IS AN AMERICAN CLASSIC RACING CAR WHICH WON ALL THE RACING TROPHIES IN THE EARLY SIXTIES, NAMED AFTER "CAROL SHELBY" WHO WAS THE ARCHITECT OF THIS CAR. THE FACULTY AND STUDENT TEAM MADE THIS CAR WITH THEIR OWN INTERPRETATION AND THEIR OWN UNDERSTANDING OF FORM AND DESIGN.
THIS IS THE FIRST TIME ANY INSTITUTE HAS ATTEMPTED SUCH A GROUND-UP PROJECT OF MAKING A DRIVE-ABLE AND AESTHETIC CAR FROM SCRATCH.
THE CAR HAS BEEN SHOWCASED AT MANY EXHIBITIONS, HAS GOT GOOD MEDIA COVERAGE AND EXCELLENT FEEDBACK FROM INDUSTRY AS WELL AS FROM DESIGN COMMUNITY.
IT WAS INDEED A GREAT LEARNING EXPERIENCE FOR EVERYONE WHO HAS PART OF THIS PROJECT.
