I really appreciate your willingness to say "I was wrong" about things. I've heard you say it in several videos when talking about past thoughts/actions, and I love that you're open about learning and acknowledge when your wrong. It's such a mark of maturity, and something we need more of in this world; the willingness to be vulnerable and admit that we're fallible. THANK YOU for being honest.

There’s a company here in Oregon who makes a really nice pelleted mix of timothy, alfalfa, canola oil, beet pulp, flax, and rice bran. It has small pellets that only take 15 minutes to soften. We also add a scoop of vitamin, mineral, and probiotics into it. We give it to our 33 yr old mare with many missing molars 3 x a day. That along with what she can eat of regular hay keeps her weight on and very healthy. She loves her mash!!

@@katiewashington7338 I'd say it's both- you can't trim good hooves onto poor management, but likewise the best management in the world can't improve poor trimming techniques IMO & IME. Can't stress enough how important good anatomically correct hooves are. They require the horse have good heels in order to have a healthy, functioning digital cushion & a good 2cm of sole between the internal hoof capsule & ground contact surface of the sole. If that is not the aim of whoever is trimming the horse (developing heel, digital cushion & sole thickness), then best to find a new trimmer IMO. Most horses are too short in the heel & long in the toe, or simply too short/over trimmed all over for long term soundness. For management during rehab treat thrush & stay on top of it all the time, aim to keep the horses hooves picked out of muck at least once daily, more often if possible. If the horse is standing in muck or moisture or hard surfaces too much during rehab of hooves it makes the job a lot harder & some form of protection will be required to allow the hooves to either dry out & hold together better or protected from over wearing so they can grow. This can be done with either shoes (glue ons probably best for very poor hooves) or by casting or booting. Diet is essential- best to talk to a qualified nutritionist as no point giving supplements that could cause imbalances with anything else you feed. ie. If you have high iron levels in your soils or forage, make sure the zinc & copper levels are high enough to overcome iron. A good "hoof quality supplement" I know of is Farriers formula from life data labs, but not sure if it is available everywhere on the planet or not. Basically, I start by improving the quality of horn so the hooves will hold a trim, then I start corrective trimming once the feet have been allowed to get a little longer.

The amount of myths and legends around ottbs is genuinely one of my biggest pet peeves in the horse world, especially in regards to their diet and hooves, you've no idea how happy I am that I can now just throw this video in the face of all the people who tell me it's impossible to have a good looking, healthy tb without a ton of "artificial" additives (shoes, grains, blankets, excessive riding gear etc.) it's all really just a matter of taking your time and going at your horse's pace ^^

I'm just so happy you take on ott horses and save them from the slaughter house. Not many people know if they don't win for the so- called owners, they dump them ASAP to be slaughtered so they don't have to feed and care for them anymore. Some do get adopted, but people need to learn about the breed thoroughly before taking them.❤️.

It's crazy how some people feed like 15lbs a day... the hardest keeper where I work gets like, 4lbs of senior feed split in 2 feedings... and the 33y/o appy in my profile pic only needs 3 cups hay pellet and 3 cups balancer grain. Most get by on less than 8 cups

I do something very similar for my QH! Took him off of grain a couple years ago when I took him out of the show barn life after he was diagnosed with ulcers. He is now on some alfalfa pellets for buffering stomach acid, no sugar added beet pulp shreds for the pectin for his hind gut, hay stretcher because our hay isn't great out here because the weather in new england has been shitty lately, and some ration balancer for anything the hay/forage isn't giving him. He's a totally fine weight and in full work. I add supplements as needed and add flax for his coat. He gets a good amount of first cutting to stay warm during the winter and busy during the summer.

Very interesting! As someone from the UK, it's so interesting to see what you feed across the pond and how different it is from us! I also only feed beet/alfalfa pellets soaked, his suppliment to balance/joint care and chaff with a tonne of water to reduce choke. Very rarely do I feed a mix or cubed feed (grain to you guys!) As my horse has access to hay 24/7 and if needed I'll add an oil in with his feed. They all look amazing, sometimes simple is better!

Thank you, I have an 8yr old paint mare in "strong" moderate work. She has a big spook, easily excitable, basically a short attention span. Flip side: she loves people, athletic, very smart, learns quickly. My latest "project" is revamping her feed. I took her off her "Fuel"(on the bag) grain & put her on a low starch/low sugar grain & tried feeding less. Added more hay, but she started to lose weight, I tried adding more feed & noticed a negative effect right away, so I added rice bran. I've been thinking about taking her off grain but didn't know I would keep up with the needed vitamins for her physical activity & muscle tone. This helped alot, I feel much more confident to do this. Thanks again.

I used to be under the impression that hoof strength/quality was 100% genetic; Either they could go barefoot or they couldn't. I had a gelding that I had to keep shod year-round. Futher more, he battled thrush and white line disease. Once I stopped feeding him grain/bagged commercial feeds, and started him on a forage-balancer with no added iron, the white line disease and thrush cleared up. For the first time ever, he could walk comfortably on gravel, barefoot! It's amazing what balanced nutrition can do for a horse!

Fabulous. You have given me hope after hearing about Milo. I have a horse with almost identical hoof issues. I’ve been chasing soundness with corrective shoeing and it’s been disconcerting. Is she a thoroughbred? I took my guys shoes off and changed his environment to a soft grass pasture I’m in Georgia so it’s cold in the winter but hot and humid summers but if you can get her shoeless and light light work and just some time to circulate and get as much red blood cells back to the hoof will build what she needs to be sound. I’m gonna be posting my horses journey and had the same issues and we are starting to finally see results and it works

After years of figuring out also my feed routine is almost exactly the same. Only thing I do different is add flax for a fat/omega source during no grass season. And add salt as most horses don’t get enough from a lick. I use California Trace for the mineral vitamin balancer. Since switching off grain I completely cured my horses chronic thrush, and have healthy hoof growth. I completely agree that diet is 100% the key to healthy hooves.

I love this! Thank you! I've been slowly moving my horse off of grain, she only gets three cups of prohorse pellets now and I've been wondering about trying a different type of feed because there's a lot of sugar in her grain and she's already a high energy horse and it does not mix well. However the place that I got her from and where I learned some things is proving to be wrong in a lot of different categories so I'm having to learn a lot on my own and videos like these help me. I have one question though, do your horses have the botulism vaccine, because I heard there's chances of botulism in hay cubes and I was just wondering if they have the botulism vaccine or not. Especially since I was wondering if it would be a good idea to get the botulism vaccine for my horse since I'd like to switch to haylage. Edit: she is also barefoot and that was one of the best decisions ive ever made. The place who had her before had shoes on her and when I first got her I also left the shoes on, until I switched vets and my vet told me that it would be better for her to be barefoot and if she ever got problems we could use supplements to help. Her feet are doing so well right now it's awesome! I've owned her for almost two years now and the tiniest changes I've made have had a huge difference in her! I love it!

My ottb mare is also on an all forage diet and she is thriving! She only gets beet pulp, hay cubes, a sprinkle of salt and the mad barn omneity supplement at feed time. Then she has constant access to hay/grass. The overfeeding of grain is so normalized especially when it comes to horses who only get a few flakes of hay a day. Seems like a conflict of interest to me.

I have an Arab who was ridden with a western snaffle with a straight cheek piece. I am using a loose ring single jointed snaffle and he has never really taken to it. He objects to having it put in his mouth frequently....so I know there is something I need to correct. I am purchasing the Harlow bridle and thinking of trying a happy mouth bit a quarter inch bigger than what I have been using. I have a Waler x American Curly (Mustang). She lives on what grows in her paddock, and oaten hay. I used to have OTTBs and Standardbreds but they got too expensive to feed. Walers are an Australian wild horse breed so Australian wild horse crossed with American wild horse equals a horse that can still actually live on wild grasses and hay. This is very easy on the food bill. If I could figure out how to feed OTTBs without breaking my bank, I’d get into re-education again. I guess that’s why I’m here…

What grain would you recommend that is low sugar to start transitioning a horse off of grain? I will be adopting a thoroughbred soon that they say is a hard keeper but I don't want to overload her with sugar from grain with the risks of colic and ulcers more prevalent, but if she does have to stay on grain I would love a low sugar option if you have any brands you recommend.

Hi there! Speaking as a newer TB owner (came from literally everything but), I'm struggling with my gelding's feet. His walls are thin, soles are awful, and heels are very underrun. I removed him from work other than hobbyist trick training and very simple liberty tasks to keep him respectful and engaged with people. I've transitioned him to barefoot and have upped his biotin based supplementation per our vet to help overall with his hoof condition. He's never been hard to keep weight on even in a steady training program, and he is on a higher fat grain but well below the recommended amount for maintenance as the bulk of his diet is forage based. Would you have specifically any sources I can research or advice I can counsel with my vet about to aid in his feet being rebuilt to a natural and healthy state that could support him in work? He's showing improvements with just corrective barefoot trimming but I'm worried once I wean him back into work under saddle or from the ground his feet will go back to chippy, unstable, and he'll ultimately need to be shod again. To note, I've tried glue ons and various other shoeing methods as well and most are not suitable for the wet/humid eastern NC area. Loved the video!

Do you test your hay? I feed grain along with Timothy/alfalfa cubes and would love to go grainless, but I’m worried their hay isn’t high quality enough to support them without grain

Yes I would recommend testing for diet balancing as you’ll get more out of it bht you can also generalize approx levels for necessary vitamins etc based on the normal soil levels for your area

My horse only gets about 2 pounds of grain a day but now I'm considering putting him on either a ration balancer or a vitamin/mineral supplement. Is there a reason you prefer the vitamin supplement over the ration balancer?
@Milestone-Equestrian
@Milestone-Equestrian 2 жыл бұрын
It just has less fillers while providing them the same needs from a vitamin perspective and it’s cheaper!

Do you have a video on what you did specifically with Milo's feet? I have a ottb barefoot who is STRUGGLING. I need help and I'm getting my farrier to give me advice but obviously any ideas are valuable, even if I don't take them.

What do you do when the mud and rain are awful, like in the video :)
@Milestone-Equestrian

Diets to prevent thrush and hoof issues, hoof doctor and field paste & dry areas to stand. The drainage was shot on this property and we rented so we just had to tough it out until we moved.

Any advice on how to streamline this process for people who have their horses boarded on pasture. Worried my guy would eat this too slow and get his food stolen by his pasture buddies. Not sure the staff would be able to take him out and feed him separately.

Do you think some horses aren't capable of being barefoot? I really want to take my lads shoes off but have been told that his feet aren't strong enough to be barefoot. He had only front shoes on till recently but the farrier and physio told mam he'd be more comfortable with shoes so ofc she agreed. I want to convince her he can be barefoot but I just don't know how to do that :/

How would you ration this for one serving for one young horse ?
@Milestone-Equestrian
@Milestone-Equestrian 2 жыл бұрын
It’s based upon what their hay is giving them as that’s the largest part of their diet so you’d have to balance it based off of your horses’ current diet MadBarn does free diet analysis here: madbarn.com/analyze-diet/?ref=1329

I'm 5'4" and I only look taller due to the uneven ground and how he stands in order to eat from his pan, definitely cannot see over him on a regular day lol

Great 'feed' video, love your explanations for each product. I also think a Cosequin supplement is really helpful for horses who have tendon/ligament issues or are in intense jumping programs. It also works really well for cats, dogs & humans. Pogo is beautiful & a really good sized horse for your boyfriend. Hopefully your bf will not only learn from you, but maybe in addition, another riding instructor - whom you approve of, because it's not always 'helpful' to correct a beginner as much as is needed... esp. if they're your ❤! 😉 That way, when he gets better, maybe he could help exercise Pogo for your Mom! I love seeing Pogo out on trails with you on Milo. 🐴❤🐎
