For what it's worth you made them really cute, especially the hooded one :~) My family is big into antiques and I grew up with at least a few dingle-dangle knick-knacks, but usually they were wooden or cloth. I think you were right to embed the wire loop into the pieces that didn't have holes; if you wanted a bit more structure for the joints, using more wire embedded in the side as a loop instead of thread through the body would help them not wave around as much, but I don't blame you for not wanting to cast them again lol
@dawndesu68632 жыл бұрын

In the USA these type of knick knacks are sold as Shelf Sitters. Their legs and arms are connected with a metal loop like you made, one in the body and one in each arm or leg. I have them for different holidays. Some have twine through the loops and a couple have metal jump rings through the loops.

The number of holes was kind of jaw-dropping. How cute of a result though. Yeah, I think they are meant to be windchimes (unless it's a shelf/mantlepiece decor, like someone else suggested, that just sits). My mom has a ceramic windchime, it has a bell shape at the top and a whole bunch of doves that hang from it at different lengths. It's not very musical, but still very pretty. --- LMAO! Yes. I see the...inappropriate...bear face. What an unfortunate snout! But, well, it is called a dingle dangle after all. XD --- I'm familiar with the acrylic method, because my grandmother used to take me to painting events at a studio near her house. I would pick out a premade piece, paint it with acrylic, then paint it with a "glaze", and get to take it home that day. It's nice for little kids who are impatient for results.

Super impressed Shelby how you made lemonade out of that lemon of a mold. It is definitely a part of a different aesthetic from another time. Love how you explain and make things work so we can see your art. 💜

They look like little shelf sitters like these figurines. The legs are attached with cord that I imagine on these bears would go in one solid piece from one limb, straight through the back, then into the hole next to it and then right back out to the next limb. The cord would kinda look like a *U* where the bear’s body is facing away from you and is set in the bend of the U. (I’ve tried to comment this 3 times, maybe this time will work? I think how you did them is cute, not my style but cute. Also, I totally saw what you mean about the face. I would suggest if you end up doing more danglies in the future that fishing line or some similar clear string might look better. That and having said string be longer might help keep the parts from trying to hide behind the piece. not 100% sure on that tho.
@ShelbySherritt3 жыл бұрын
I totally agree! I didn’t have fishing line and only had bright coloured thread so I used the one closest to brown 😂 it just wasn’t a fun week for me make them! I just found them so fiddly! I did try a longer thread on the arms but then they hung so low that it looked so odd! I should have showed that in the video! But I settled for shorter length because it looked less strange. Not my style either but interesting all the same 😂🤔

I used to go to a paint your own pottery place. I get envious when I watch you do the glazes because as a kid, while I was in ceramics, we weren't allowed to use glaze. It was too difficult. The ones my instructor had didn't show colour until after they were fired, so when a kid used it, the colours would muddy and things wouldn't be in the right spot, and then the kids would get upset.

Also, I remember bears and dolls that were constructed similarly and the legs and arms were tied on with the fabric their clothes would have been. Like the papa bear’s legs would be tied on with denim scraps and the arms would have been tied on with scraps from a plaid shirt? But the holes are so small on these pieces, maybe a similar looking ribbon?

I've had seen figures with similar "lose limbs" that are fastened to the body by ribbons or string, obviously you'd just poke the holes early on and attach the limbs once done with the final firing, but the figures are then meant to sit on a shelf and dangle their limbs. The ones I've seen have been pretty cute!

I haven't seen those bears. But I've seen similar ceramic pieces, like turtles with wiggly legs and head, that are similar. The turtles were on their bellies w/ the legs suspended in the shell, with wire hoops (like your bear legs) inside the shell, and little hooks on the legs. I think that would be the best approach w/ these bears as well. Put the wire loops in the bottom of the body, and make hooks to go in the legs. You could even bend a piece of wire so each end is parallel, twist the open ends w/ pliers, and use that to make the hooks. The twists will give a better hold, and you could probably even use a little slip to glue it in place. Finally, if the hooks are long enough you can bend them around to close them.
@TheAshmah3 жыл бұрын
I have Christmas tree ornaments in that style. They have the metal hook on limbs and a hook on the main body and then string tied to each hook (hope that makes sense) means the limbs don't pull back and they dangle.

I noticed those bears in the early 1970s. They were popular hanging like wind chimes. But in garden sheds and carports
@Vocalinds3 жыл бұрын
My first thought when I saw the different pieces was that you would use a thick wire or ribbon to go through both the front and back holes on the body and tie a knot at the back. Then the arms and legs would be attached to the front hole only. You would see the knot at the back but it would be "rustic." It might make the limbs sit better? Good effort persevering with a pretty wacky mould! I must admit I LOLed at the inappropriate faces and the backwards legs! 😄
@silvermyst30813 жыл бұрын

if you used fine grit sandpaper, would you be able to soften the "features"? or just a little bit of slip/clay to make it more of a care bear look? i dont know how easy it is to modify a piece after it's out of the mold. 🤔 i just personally want to make everything in non-natural colors, so if i were given the opportunity to try a version of some dingle dangle bears, I'd do like blueberry cupcake inspired bears. yum!

Absolutely! So I tend not to adjust the mould too much because I guess this series is trying to bring their intention and purpose back to life. So I get a little scared to modify them because I want to try and bring the piece itself back! You can use a wet sponge to smooth a piece and carve away at the clay to give it more detail or take away detail! I definitely love the care bear idea too! I was also wanting to test the acrylic browns to see those results but ran out of time in the voiceover for explain that! Earlier videos I’ve spoken about how underglaze browns don’t look like brown! So I tested the acrylic browns to see how they come out and they are perfect! So if something needs brown I now know what to use!
