Back 30+ years ago, you would have had a hard time selling to a comic geek like that. The majority knew their stuff. Not that collectors didn't get ripped off, but the ripoff was usually a comic that wasn't the condition stated (missing a Marvel value stamp, or restored and not being told). And there weren't so many non-comic items to buy. I miss those days.
