I had a Sheldon 10", with the single tumbler feeds box, and the overhead flat pulley drive. Neat little lathe that I wish I'd never sold. They are very similar in size and capabilities to the far more popular South Bend "heavy 10", but are often in much better condition. The South Bend lathes are victims of their own popularity, and are frequently quite worn. I sold mine to a machinist who was looking for a smaller lathe as a backup for his much larger Hendy. Last I heard, it was still making very good parts. I wouldn't hesitate to buy another one, if a deal presented itself.

Finally some coverage for the Sheldon folks. I have a WM-56 P. It's still in pieces from the move but I'm looking forward to getting it cleaned up and running again.

Sheldon lathes are actually MONARCH JUNIOR, Sheldon got the rights to produce them when Monarch discontinued the line. Sheldon also got some of Monarchs production engineers. ALL SHELDON'S ARE DAMNED GOOD LATHES. They put all the other Atlas, Logan, Southbend's TO SHAME in both QUALITY AND PRECISION. The delivery specs are amazing. ZERO SPINDLE RUN OUT. I will never sell my Sheldon.

I appreciate the video. What I would add to what you are doing: 1) Plywood on the ways to prevent me from dropping a wrench. 2) I would have put spindle oil on and set the tooling up prior to bringing the bearing out. Thermal change begins almost immediately after being removed from the freezer. It's not a large item so you probably lost half of the shrinkage. 3) I would have used some wooden blocks in between to keep the press tool from dropping down and knicking a bearing. That's just me..... I hope to one day own a Sheldon lathe and I want to take good care of it. They sure as heck don't make them like that anymore.

I appreciate your comments and agree with you. The lathe is finished and has been working, it has paid for itself and the repairs and then some. I have to try to get some time to make a video to explain what happened with the footage of the completed project. There is a collet closer & a DRO on the lathe now. If anyone is having trouble like I was, finding the proper collet adapter for any lathe, I would recommend buying a 5c collet adapter that has no taper on the OD. Just bore your chuck jaws and if need be grind them, then put the adapter in the chuck. This is how I have the lathe set up now. It runs very true and if you need to use the chuck it's easy to do so. Thanks for watching!

Hey, thanks so much for making that! I have a TUS-70P, same taper bearings, 11 x 70", from 1948, serial number TSWQU 14628. This is the first time I've ever seen the spindle taken apart, and it's invaluable! My spindle doesn't spin very easily... it has a little stiction getting the started, though after that it's pretty good. I have a copy of John Knox's explanation about how to adjust them, but I'm trying to get an idea how easily they should spin, and whether I should adjust or replace the bearings. Would you perhaps post the model and serial number?

I enjoyed the video! I have the same model and the spindle set is not missing. Can you explain in a video or text how you removed it? Sorry to bother you.

Thanks for the video. I'm looking into buying one of these and was wondering if all 10" (2 tumbler models) Sheldons have this type of bearing? Or are there also plain bearing models ?

I honestly don’t know for sure, I want to say yes, but if you go to the Sheldon forum on Yahoo you probably could find out for from a much more knowledgeable source. I could be wrong but I think some of the early models might have used the bronze bushing type of arrangement. I am sorry it took so long to respond. Thanks and good luck with your search.

Nice video. What is your source for the spindle bearings?
@tailormachineworks2814 жыл бұрын
Hi Chris, thanks! I am not 100% sure but I think I got them from Motion Industries. Be sure that the bearings your buying are meant to be used in a lathe,this way you should be getting good bearings. On the Timkin bearing web site they have a list of distributors. I have to do a channel update, but I just want to say that if you think your bearings are bad, before you buy new ones first check your head stock. If it is the type like the Sheldon or a small South Bend or Logan that bolts to the ways, check to make sure it is bolted down tight. My head stock was not tight, that was why the spindle was able to move up and down. I kept the bearings because the old ones where a bit sketchy. Thanks Chris.

Thanks for this great video. I have a 10"X46" EXL Sheldon lathe. Any idea what the spindle taper is?

If your bore is 1 3/8 it's a 5c

I have not been able to find out. Any sizes that I was told have been wrong. If you are looking for a collet nose or adapter for your spindle, I found some very nice straight ground 5C adapters from MSC and I think I found some on e bay also. I just put it into the three jaw chuck and it works extremely well.

How did you set the preload?

Wouldn’t you start with the disassembled first? Boy this is like watching paint dry! Some editing would go a long way.
