Sheldon’s project was actually really good because it’s ahead of its time and it’s deep but he lost because they found that girl’s to be more interesting since hers uses applied physics to style her hair while Sheldon’s used no experiment, just information presented on a board. If Sheldon had used an experiment or a visual to demonstrate his ideas, I think he would’ve won. It’s like theoretical vs applied physics.

I would also have chosen the girl with the static electricity hair generator. She at least had a visual to go along with her project. I am not particularly fond of Sheldon's fashion sense, though.

Well, the problem is actually the targeted audience. At university, STEM students are often taught to present information differently to different type of audience. Sheldon's project is too technical and it is not really suitable to be presented to a group of high school students. Sheldon's project is really good if it's a undergraduate or graduate physics project, and its targeted audience should really be professors and fellow physics undergraduates or graduates. High school kids do not understand what he does, nor do they really want to understand it. They want to see some action, something cool. A Tesla coil, a rail gun or Sheldon's rocket would get him first prize.

I guess it's understandable when you take into account that a science fair is not really about making science and it's more about spreading the knowledge science has gained. Therefore calling it a "science fair" is disingenuous because making a demonstration derived from the knowledge actual scientists have achieved is indeed, not science. The same why engineering is not a science.

Actually they usually are original science. That’s why it’s usually some kid whose parents are scientists themselves who wins. Gets them special permission to do grunt work in a lab so they can put their name on the paper.

I had an art project in fifth grade and suffered simularly I was always fascinated by art and was said to be really good at it, so i decided to take the art fair at my school however despite working far more detailed and even trying harder than i really ever have on drawing one of my finest for my age i lost to a girl who took a picture of some shoes on a porch with a flower between it and a different hue of shading of course i was upset but i also understood it caught their eyes of a decent photo with eyecatching colors while mine was a black and white drawing in all honesty i got off track with what i was going to say before if my project of protecting the Earth from asteroids was overlooked by a well known sicence prjoect you'll definetly see atleast once in every science fair of course i'd be upset

Honestly, I think that if Sheldon had added a visual demonstration or experiment (obviously, it would have to be one that wouldn't likely destroy the gym) to his project, to show how his plan would work, he might have had a chance at winning. But the way Sheldon presented his project, Jeorgey might as well have beat him with the burping, because even though Jeorgey's project was SO GROSS, at least he (Georgey) had a visual experiment (obviously, one that wasn't likely to destroy the gym) to go along with it. Sheldon deserved to lose that contest. Science fairs, like real life science proposals for grants and such, are as much based on appealing to the audience as they are about the science itself. His project went WAY over everyone else’s heads, it offered nothing to keep their attention other than a bunch of graphs and equations, and it was entirely theoretical with no practical application or demonstration.
