Saving a Snared Baby Elephant | Sheldrick Trust

As we are reminded time and again, snares are an incredibly cruel threat to wildlife. Laid by poachers, these simple loops, made from either wire, cable, rope or nylon, lie in wait to entangle any unsuspecting creature who crosses their path.
On the afternoon of 6th March 2021, Batian Craig alerted us to the plight of a snared baby elephant in Ndera Community Conservancy. His frantic family was still in the area, but a rope snare was affixed to a deeply embedded stake, anchoring the calf to the spot and spelling out certain tragedy if we didn’t immediately intervene.
This was all unfolding along a remote sector of the Tana River, making the rescue mission extremely challenging. Our airwing is poised for situations like these, so the helicopter flew Dr Poghon of our KWS/SWT Tsavo Mobile Veterinary Unit to the scene.

On The Sheldrick Trust site they say the mother was nearby and the baby made a beeline straight to her.I had to look it up because I could not imagine these wonderful people just leaving it on it's own. Thank you all those who help these elephants.

Thank you for posting this comment. I have never seen the trust leave a baby. Especially when the family has gone. Its good to know they (or at least the mom) were not far. I really need to make time to read mt newsletter from DSWT. I am sure there is more that I missed.

Seems to me they are after adults as they tend to kill the mother and leave the poor baby with out one. I thought most were after the ivory tusks. Here's the lovely end to this story in case anyone was worried about what happened next: The calf’s mother had valiantly attempted to free her baby, as indicated by broken vegetation all around the site. That made it all the more gratifying to watch the calf run off into the forest once he was revived, making a beeline for his mother. We can only imagine how relieved she was to see her beloved baby emerge through the trees and be reunited at last. For the team, they were left feeling a sense of accomplishment, thankful to be in a position to right such wrongs so that this elephant family could remain intact.♥️🐘

So glad that baby was freed before the herd left. And that the baby was not badly injured so that it could go back to its herd. The baby must have been so frightened of all the people having grown up in the wild. That’s what scares me about the ex-orphans, they are used to being around people, not realizing not everyone are good to elephants . I wonder if the mother was close by?

thank goodness there was a happy ending to this = the mother of the calf and a bull elephant were in the area. the plane circled over the mother and the bull elephant to ensure that the rescuers were not endangered by very protective elephants. At least this snare wasn't around it's neck. Those are the worst. Bad enough that baby could have lost a foot or leg, but those around the neck? Almost always deadly because of the pulling while attempting to escape. God bless those people that go out to help these animals and, hopefully, save as many as possible.
