What if you stay in a small apartment show what to do would be nice 👍❤
@donnawheeler62833 ай бұрын
@LaTanyaMikell-b5t I live in an apartment. I buy enough paper products, baby wipes, toiletries, etc, to last me 2 months ahead of what I already use. I purchase shelf stable foods that require little to no preparation and rotate and use them. Then, I replenish my food, water, and pantry as needed to stay 2 months out of what I'm using daily, weekly, etc. I have one pet. I purchase her food, treats, and water the same way, 2 months out. It wasn't an overnight task getting to this point, but I did. Now, I sustain it and add or subtract as my tastes change in foods or needs change. I grew up with a dad who volunteered with the Civil Defense (CD). The CD was created before FEMA and taught people to be self-sufficient in times of disaster to fit their area needs, such as, i live in "Tornado Alley" which is a swath in several states in the Midwest. We prepare as best we can in times of tornadoes, ice storms, and other storms that disrupt power, water, or other utilities. You should prepare, as best you can, and be easy on yourself. It takes time to get to maintenance of your food, water, etc. Prepare for the disasters or tough times or whatever fits your need. First, identify your needs. Then, make lists and think about what you've purchased for yourself, family, etc, in the past few months. Buy only things you and your family like. I hope this helps you. Space is an enemy in an apartment, and I fully understand that. A bookcase, shelving, or totes are great things to use for storage. Even under bed totes are useful.

I do it every year starting after Easter. Hurricane season starts June 1st - November 30th. Grandkids get to use them over Thanksgiving, Christmas, Winter Intermission, and Spring Break. I have a gas grill, stove, and a charcoal grill and quick light charcoal, too. A full set of cast iron cookware and baking wear in another tote, by chance, if someone is sick (me), they know how to cook and survive. Water I buy the cases of bottle water. Which is like 3 gallons per case. Stack them in a corner 10 to 15 high. Always buy 1 case each for the cat and dog. In a tote, I have paper plates, bowls, trash bags , paper cups , plastic spoons, and forks, everyday wipes, kool-aid packs to add to the water bottles dry milk, dry egg mix , dry cat food, dry dog food, first aid kit, batteries , flash lights, battery candle. In another tote, I put all the meals kits in. I live in South Carolina. I also have (2) 55-gallon trash cans I put in each bathtub and fill it with water. For flashing the toilets. When Hugo came, I was out of power for 3 and a half weeks without power with a 1 year old and a 2 year. Every year since I have added and kids are grown but still have granddaughter in my home, I am raising. At her request, we loaded everything up and took it to North Carolina, and she gave it all alway. Her school did a fund drive for clothes, shoes, socks, and baby needs too, and we took it as well. She even used her own money to buy pots and pans and small charcoal grills .

Vet information and copies of vaccinations can be helpful, too.

A few things that you might want to consider adding are a can opener, paper plates, paper bowls, plastic silverware and a roll or two of paper towels. If the water is somehow shut off, you don't want to waste your cooking and drinking water on washing dishes plus a can opener for opening the cans. Just an idea and it shouldn't add much weight to the bins either!

I routinely use canned goods that are two to three years past the 'Best by' date without any issues. Just check the condition of the can (no bulging cans) and do a smell and texture test. I grew up in an age where there was no such thing as a sell by date except for raw meat, lol.

We were hit by both hurricane Helene and Milton this year. Many of us still have repairs to finish from Ian or had just finished. Some of the BEST items we had to get through the lack of power and water were things people don't think about. We bought a generator 2 years ago after many hurricanes without. Many people have done the same however they don't store it in running order or start it up and run it weekly or every 2 weeks to keep seals from drying out and gas from going bad. No gas motor can just sit there and let the gas evaporate or go bad and still start & run after being ignored for a year or 2. Some people bought a generator but never learned how to use it and didn't have the correct type of oil or gas to run it when they needed it. You'll probably need outdoors extention cords if you want to use it to run your fridg or freezer, coffee pot, electric griddle etc etc. If you have a propane grill, make sure you have a extra tank or two for cooking as well as pots and pans that can be used for that type of cooking. These med high heat only or non stick aluminum pans usually can't handle the heat of a open flame or grill. Colman camping stoves also work great for cooking when you have no electricity. The little cans of Sterno can help too. You don't have to be at a banquet or outdoor celebration to use them to keep food hot. I had a frame that holds a pan above the can and sat warm coffee, soup, grilled sandwiches etc in the pan and covered them. They stayed hot for much longer than I needed and those little cans were not that expensive. We also have a emergency Radio. It can use solar power or a built in hand crank to recharge it's batteries and it also has 3 different types of lights and a port to recharge your phone built in. My husband thought it was a silly thing for me to ask for, until we used it every day after the hurricane until the power came back on. I also found a pack of 4 solar lights that are advertised to be placed around the house to see at night. Stairs, over doorways or along sideways. Everyone had one of these to use at night for going to the bathroom or just walking around the house. They have a hook for hanging and a on/off switch. Id sit them in the sunlight every morning for use later. Another cheap alternative to batteries. Our neighbors even came over to hear the latest news as nobody had any WiFi signal and to ask if we had any extra candles or batteries as theirs had run out of power. book to read, deck of cards, board games, puzzles etc for everyone also helps. Not much to do with no power and 12 hours or more until the sun comes up, if its not raining. If it is raining then its a even longer day with not much you can do. I always thought of it as if I was preparing the family for camping and we were camping in tents. Nobody is sleeping in a bed that is or was in feet of flood waters so if your in a area that could get wet having a few air mattresses just in case is good too. Two weeks is a long time to wait for the power to come back. We all think about food and water for ourselves and our pets but many people don't think about what they'll need if its out for longer than 3 days and what they will do when not eating. I keep our things in a tote that we can easily get to and update it regularly by charging the solar systems and updating any of the kids items. Food is in a separate box with the expiration date of soon to expire items listed on the outside. If I know a storm is coming I can add items that we use everyday like salt, sugar, spices, paper items and silverware. Sounds like a lot but as you've said if you just do a few things at a time they will add up quickly and you'll be the best shape when that next emergency comes.

My tip: Have a manual can opener in your 'go bag' and with your emergency meals. The military style that we called P-38s can be purchased online. They can fit on a keychain or on a dog tag neck chain. Those are much cheaper than a full-size manual can-opener.

I just watched Vickie's video. We have to be gluten and dairy free because of one with celiac and one with a severe dairy allergy in our family. So I could only use her taco soup. And Brooke, I can only use your burrito bowl. Of course I can make substitutes. But even in just day to day life, we make a lot of Mexican because it's easy to use corn items instead of flour. And we also make a number of Thai recipes because they often use coconut milk instead of dairy. And of course both Mexican and Thai are good with rice instead of pasta. Still, with our diet restrictions, I've managed to put together several shelf stable emergency meals. They mostly just have to be simple ingredients instead of blends, etc. If anyone else has dietary restrictions, you'll have to get creative but you'll be able to find substitutes and put together some emergency meals too.

Many of these recipes ive not heard of before so instructions are greatly appreciated. 😊

I am impressed by this video. Your emergency kit meals look tasty and simple to put together. Thank you for the ideas.

Be very careful on adding to single gallons of water into a tote sometimes they will begin to leak. I’ve had this issue in the past and switched from the single gallons of water unless they are for weekly use to the five big bottles! I think they also have them the 3 gallon bottles as well from what I’ve seen but single use gallons of water not good to store in a tote, especially for long-term purposes. They will break down and they will start to leak just knowledge from Experience as a prepper 3:35

I was gonna say a can opener and a serving spoon but maybe keep that with the dutch oven and other cutlery you may need, but truthfully in an emergency everyone can eat outta the pan if need be. Less to wash and time saving.

good idea

Try and get canned goods that use only water and salt for their canning process. That way that liquid in those cans can be used for preparing the meals instead of having to use water that could otherwise be used for drinking.

Writing "use by date" on the directions sheet (in large print) before placing it in the baggie would be a good idea.

Thanks for sharing these yummy ideas. I have a tip from experience. The plastic dollar tree gallon water jugs last longer. The "milk jug" plastic breaks down much sooner. You might find a soggy mess instead of a blessing. I would hate for that to happen. Luv ya 🤟

Aldi has heavy duty gallon water jugs. When I empty I fill back up with water.

@@robinholbrook8296 I didn't know that. Thanks for the tip 👍

I've never had the milk jug style break down. I store that style in my storm shelter for emergencies and have some down there almost 2 years before rotating them out and they were all still in great shape. (We try to swap them out every year, but sometimes that isn't a priority in the budget)

I have had that happen. What a mess.

And don't forget to keep liquid that drain out of cans or canned chicken!! Like chicken broth will save some of the water you have!! Hope thing's getting back to some normal with Helena!! God Bless You and your Loved ones!!
