Wow, it's episode 200 already?!! Time really flies when you're collecting seashells at the beach... and cleaning and organizing them! I have been very fortunate to collect, buy, and be gifted these rare, foreign, and amazing shells over the past 18 months. I couldn't have done it without you all. Thank you so much for taking the time to see how I display my shells at home.
A BONUS!! My original shell cabinet video was only shared here on Facebook: / 1351979532319339
The Brisbane Shell Show (and unboxing it) that I keep referencing: • Let's Unbox! Brisbane ...
-------
NOTE: I am behind on messages everywhere right now as I get busy preparing for the busy season. I will get back to you all, and I will also put information here regarding my display equipment/setup if that interests you (in a few days, gosh, I need it)!! Thanks~
Cabinet from IKEA (~2.6 feet wide, by 3.7 feet high, by 1.3 feet deep): www.ikea.com/au/en/p/fabrikoe...
Lighting is COB LED strip lighting with adhesive backing - 5 metre length with 480 LEDs per metre. I got the power plug adapter with it; an added extra. I chose a neutral white colour (4000K). From eBay, it was ~$35AUD. I adhered the lighting strip in a certain way around only some of the edges of the inside of the cabinet, and the power cord goes in/out a small hole at the top where the wall mounted screw should go. Message me on Facebook or Instagram if you want more info about how I did this.
Glass jars are from the Kmart stores. Various sizes in various styles. I've linked the mini jars that I like for the Brown-lined Paper Bubles, Hebrew Cones, Olive Shells (lids beneath them), etc: www.kmart.com.au/product/2-mi...
The very small jars with cork stoppers are from the dollar store (like Dollar Tree, Choice Discount, etc) in packs with various sizes and styles. Also from the dollar store: very shallow glass candle holders - I put my green sea urchins in one on the middle shelf, and a bigger one with various shells on the bottom shelf.
Acrylic riser / platform / jewellery stands are from eBay. Not cheap, I got a set of 10 for about $50AUD. I don't know if the link will work, so you will need to search around for the style, type, and size that you'd might like for your own collections.
The individual shell stands are "acrylic specimen stands". Search for this on eBay
The scallop/bivalve stands are "acrylic stands for trading cards". Search for this on eBay.
Did I miss anything? Please ask me in the comments and I will be happy to advise.

Let me know which ones were your favourites ;D and if you enjoyed this and want to see more shell finding videos, I'd appreciate a like or a comment. I read all of them and try to reply when I can. You have no idea how much of a smile you guys put on my face. Thanks everyone!

Maddie Maddie, I never knew you had such a wonderful collection. You will have a better collection than me. I will make sure you do not get duplicates. I do have shells which you do not have but someday will be yours. You did a wonderful job arranging your seashells in your cabinet. You should be proud of yourself. Thank you for sharing an awesome video. Love, Trudy

G'day Trudy!! Awww thank you for your kind words! I think you knew I had this collection; you've seen me collect them over the year, and you even gifted me so many yourself! I know, I know, it's a different think entirely to see them all together like this. I was so excited to show them this time, especially after the time it took to arrange the display. Instead of being proud, I think I am more grateful to you and everyone else who has supported me so much over the last year and beyond. I am so fortunate and lucky to live in a place with amazing seashells too. Thank you so, so much for watching my big video

Wow Maddie, I never know you had a great seashell collection, I really love your shell collections, I love it very much. You know I have a lot of seashells back home in my bedroom, I put my seashells into my basket for my shells just for my very own collection just like you. You have a lot of shells than I am, because I know that you love to collect all of seashells that you can find at the beach, to put it into your new shell collection,so sweet. Anyway I love all of your shell from your collection, I’m so happy for you, I like your video, and thank you so much for showing me your seashells collection, I thought “This is the best collection that you could imagine in the world in a better place just for you.” Julia

G'day Yao 🐚 Phew, I'm glad the display turned out all right; I wasn't sure if it would be too overwhelming on the eyes, though it's enough that I like it! Oh yes, a display case sure does take up a solid chunk of space!! I chose between this or a bedside table (this is right next to my bed) and it's about 3foot by 4. Not small, though not as big as some of the option I noticed while shopping around. The lighting is something I'm very happy with; it was a lovely addition and totally worth the careful planning to make it work! Ahh I'm suddenly nerding out about cabinet and lighting, I suddenly feel like such an mature person!! Thank you so much for checking out my display video today. And now I can write a more detailed comment 😊 Wonderful collection Maddie!👍👍👍 Firstly, it is very beautifully displayed, everything is very beautifully and spectacularly arranged☝ Cowries and cones are my favorite topic, so I will focus on them. Although I can’t help but note separately, I really liked the murexes and harpas, how different they are, and of course the bivalves! About cowries - in the old days you would be a great collector to have two golden cowries at once, it’s cool and they are different colors, different, but both are beauties! A very interesting wonder cowry, it has an interesting dark color, I mostly saw lighter specimens. Zoila friendii is simply beautiful, what a coloring she has, it’s a joy to look at! I would put Zoila marginata on the shelf next to it, which lies there below, after all, marginata is a wonderful shell, as well as the friendii dream of every cowries collector! By the way, I also have Z.marginata, but yours is more beautiful than my Maddie! Now I’ll jump to the shelf to the cones, they’re all beautiful! Yes, now I looked at your cones and looked at the color variations of the cones in your collection, this is great, a different color immediately changes the appearance of the sink. And this cone is similar to Conus betulinus ???🤔 18:39 , but it’s better to clarify here; it’s just a very rich color, usually paler, I recently gave this to a friend, he saw it on me, I told him, take it from me, I have a second one. I hope that in the future I will also be able to give you something Maddie!😊 Overall a very cool collection Maddie, I really liked it! 👍👍👍

G'day Mikhail 🐚 My goodness, thank you for taking the time to thoroughly watch my big cabinet video today! You kind words mean so much to me; putting this together took a lot of time and I'm quite pleased with how it turned out... I was so excited to show it to everyone!! A big reply to your lovely comment: I have a heap of different shells, and I love the Cowries, but I think I might actually like the Murexes more than Cones, so I have a lot of them! I wish I had more Harpas, they are just so interesting. I think only 18 different species of Harpa exist in the word; so few, but so lovely. Oh wow, I can't believe that you noticed the different colours on those Golden Cowries - it's so subtle. I am very fortunate to have been given one, and to have found one to buy on eBay. In the old days, you would have needed to get a plane ticket to the Philippines! For the Wonder Cowrie... I saw yours and immediately wanted one!! Haha. I looked on eBay and fell in love with one that I saw there. I'm not usually so impulsive, but it was love at first sight. Yes, this one I have is unusually dark. I do love my Zoila Friendii too. I actually unboxed both of these in a video (on Facebook) but I made private videos so someone without Facebook could also see them. I will leave links to those videos if you want to see them up close, but no pressure to watch. kzbin.info/www/bejne/q4PWqq2LqNWtpck and kzbin.info/www/bejne/gWiahYuHl7mCrKc Oh Mikhail, I'm sure your Zoila marhinata is much better than mine!! Mine has a lot of chipped corners and is slightly dull. I got it from a friend for a few dollars because he called it trash 😂 but saying that, I still like it a lot! Hmm, I thought about putting it next to my friendii, but I just liked the Panamanian Deer Cowrie up there more 😂 I'm so pleased that you liked the Cone shells too! I didn't really realise how many I had until I put them all out. Before now, my cones were in various places around the house; this was the first time I'd seen them all together like this. You are correct, it is a Conus betulinus (the Beech Cone). I actually have a second one that is paler like you said, but I only put this one in the cabinet because I loved it's dark colours and patterns more. This was a gift from a friend, and I suspect he might have gotten it from Papua New Guinea a few years ago. It's a very eye catching cone shell! Thank you so much for your amazing comment, and for taking the time to thoughtfully watch my video today 🥰 I'm happy you enjoyed it~

@@SandCoffeeRocks G'day Maddie😊 Oh yes ! You designed your collection very beautifully and spectaculary! I enjoyed watching this video! About murexes - yes, murexes are a whole universe, some collectors spend their entire lives collecting only murexes, there are so many of them and they are all so beautiful and so different. I probably specifically try not to buy murex, I have very few of them, although I really like them because I understand that if I start collecting them purposefully, I won’t stop😅. About harp - yes, I really like them too, I specifically looked at WoRMS, it seems that now they have settled on the fact that there are 15 species of harp, although everything is constantly changing there and tomorrow there may already be 20. The other day I saw an incredibly ribbed Harpa costata, what a beauty. There seem to be a few species, but some of them, it seems to me, are not very often found on sale, so it will probably take a lot of time to collect all types of harps. About Golden Cowries - yes, in the video you can clearly see the difference in their colors, the one on the left next to the mappa is roughly one tone darker or more saturated than the one on the right, but you have both of them with very good colors, I like this coloring, just sometimes They are very light, almost pink, it doesn’t look as impressive as yours. About Zoila Friendii - I will definitely watch this video, I’m very glad that you posted it here!👍 The only thing is that I write comments slowly, so don’t be surprised if I don’t comment right away or comment after a few days, I’m actually also slow to respond to letters and people often and justifiably get offended at me for this, but I can’t help it, although it’s very bad🤦‍♂️😂 About Zoila marginata - yours is very beautiful and you very successfully bought it from us, they are something of a rarity, probably because only cowrie collectors buy them and therefore prices for them start at $100 usd😁, so Friendii can be bought cheaper than marginata. But here it’s a rarity))) About the cones - So you also think that this is Conus betulinus, it seems so similar but the color is very bright, although their color really varies very much. I was also very pleased with the shells in boxes with transparent lids; my mother loved to arrange small shells this way😊. And Maddie, you can look at everything there for a very long time, because in fact in the comments I touched on a very small part of your collection😊

@@mikhail-tikhonov Don't worry Mikhail, I am getting much slower with my comments theses days too... I have more than when I started doing KZbin, which is good though!! Also, thank you for watching my unboxings; I will reply to them soon too. I'm glad you enjoyed them :D Hahaha, yes, collecting such beautiful shells like Murexes can be a rabbit hole that you will fall into! Best to stay away! I don't specifically look for Murexes to buy (they are pricey!!), but I so really love having them. Oh, I saw some Harpa costata shells at the Shell Show this year... so beautiful, but smaller than you'd think. SO frilly though, so lovely too. For the Golden Cowries, I'm pretty sure they have a better, richer colour if they are live taken. The paler ones are probably dead collected? I'm not sure how right that is, but it wouldn't surprise me if it's true. I believe that one I bought was live(?) and the one I was given (lighter) has documentation that says that too... it's an old shell from a museum collection in the Philippines. The thing about the expensive Z. marginiata shells is that only the BEST ones are on eBay to buy. For one like mine with chipping, I wonder if it would even be listed for sale?? Still, I know I am very lucky to have it. Unfortunately, I don't think I can go to the Western Australia Shell Show next year (I can't leave my cat, she's very particular), otherwise I might be able to find another bargain one there too!! Oh wow, I'm really pleased that you liked the containers that I put the shells in! I think they are just ones from the dollar store, but they work so well in the cabinet! Once again, thank you so, so much for your lovely comments. You are so thoughtful, and really gave me video a lot of consideration. Thanks for watching

@@SandCoffeeRocks Yes, Maddie! I see that you have a lot of comments that need to be answered and I understand how much time it takes you, you can respond to comments all day long😄so it’s even better for me that you don’t answer right away, I just answer then I translate my answer so that it sounds more or less clear😂 Yes, many murexes are expensive, that’s for sure)) But this does not stop many, I knew one murex collector, he had more than two thousand murex in his collection, but he collected them for several decades. Yes, yes Maddie, I saw your cat😸 She is funny😻 By the way, you drew her well then. Yes, my mother didn’t go anywhere either when she had a Siamese cat))) Animals are like children, you can’t leave them alone)) About Golden Cowries, yes, I also have suspicions that many of the cyprei shells that are paler were collected dead, but on the other hand there is not much difference, they are also very beautiful. But in any case, despite the fact that you won’t be able to go to the exhibition next year, I think you will eventually have almost all the Zoilas in your collection and that’s very good😊!

Bad influence. 😄 I would love to know who you deal with for shells. I was actually thinking of asking. I unfortunately don't live near the seashore, so don't get to go shelling often. The many of shells I have were given to me by my uncle when I was young. He lived in Key West, Florida. He would go SCUBA diving and send me the shells he found. And a lot I purchased at shell shop. I am planning to visit a cousin who lives in Florida this spring and we have already planned to go shelling. @@SandCoffeeRocks

@@melissawells6068 Oh wow, scuba diving for shells, what an exciting uncle!!! Also, my goodness, your Flordia cousin is awesome to have you around for a visit next year; I hope you find a few bucketloads of great shells to take home!! For some shell sellers, I must admit, I have not actually used either of these (yet), but they do come highly recommended. For my shells, most of my foreign ones either came as unboxing gifts, or from the Brisbane Shell Show earlier in the year. For others, there are a few local gift stores that I've been lucky with, and for my expensive shells; a few sellers on eBay. However, this time, I would like to mention two that I generally think of as cheap and/or good value that ship internationally (I believe)... but, saying that, I think the postage cost will be a big consideration to you because these two sellers are based in Australia, and it very quickly becomes expensive. First is Naturally Wild: natwild.com.au/collections/seashells-natural I have been meaning to do a buy and rate video for this store... I don't actually know the quality of the shells, but I've heard good things. Plus, I met the owner at the Brisbane Shell Show (he had a store there) and the shells looked good - he is also the biggest supplier of goods to museum gifts stores within Australia. The prices are very cheap, but remember: the postage will be your biggest concern, and you can actually choose what each shell will look like. Second (and last) is She Sells Shells: www.she-sells-shells.com.au/ She also has an eBay store that you can look for, but prices on her website are a little better, but I think the stock is sometimes a little different between the website and the eBay, so I will link both: www.ebay.com.au/str/shesellsshellscaloundra The prices are more in line with what I typically think they should be while still being affordable for what they are, and the best part about this store is that you're getting the EXACT shell pictured in the photo, not just a generic shop photo like on Naturally Wild. Less guesswork, but you pay a little more for it. Again, the postage will be your biggest concern too, so do keep that in mind. Also keep in mind that shipping from Australia will probably take at least two or three weeks unless it's delayed for longer with the Christmas rush. Plus, the sellers have other orders too, and will need time to pack yours if you decide to buy anything, so anything ordered now might not even arrive until next year. Anyway, have fun and don't let your wallet curse my name too much :)

G'day Jan 👋🏻💖 Thank you so much for your kind words!! I don't know if you saw, but I tucked your South Carolina shells and urchins into some glass jars; they make for a lovely backdrop! I must apologize; I so, so wanted to included the beautiful little Pendant Murexes that you sent to me... But I couldn't find them in time 😨 I even thought I somehow threw out their little box - I was devastated for about 2 days until I was uploading my shell cabinet video that night...I cast my eyes over to the side of my desk and they were sitting there in their little box THE WHOLE TIME. Urrhhh... They will be going in with their friends soon; they are some of my favourite Murexes!!! Thank you so much for watching, and for everything you've done for me this year. Oh, and Happy Thanksgiving for tomorrow 🥰 stay safe and have a wonderful day 🎉

G'day RaeRae! Thank you so much, I must say, I am quite pleased with how the cabinet organisation turned out (haha, I know I'm tooting my own horn here). I'm sure your cabinet and collection is fabulous too; probably filled with a heap of different shells!! I'm so glad that I could give a bit of inspiration to your setup. I have been meaning to add information about my setup into my video description, but the time got away from me! I got the cabinet from IKEA: www.ikea.com/au/en/p/fabrikoer-glass-door-cabinet-black-blue-80363172/ it's not the biggest one they have, but it just fit perfectly between my bed, the wall, and the sliding door... just perfect, though I would've liked a white colour (they only have tardis blue or pale yellow in this size). I put the lighting in myself; it's a COB LED flexible adhesive strip light; 5 metres long if I recall, and I needed to buy the version with a power plug adapter included. All of the glass jar with wooden lids are from Kmart; they have a bunch of these in their homewares/kitchen section. The small jars with the corks are from the local dollar shop. The acrylic risers (platforms) are from eBay. I will be putting various links and extra information in my video description too, but I hope that helps for now ;) Thanks for watching!!

Your shells are awesome! I live and shell in Florida and don’t have very many of the ones you find! I make shell art from the ones I find. It’s so fun. How do you make them so shiny?
@SandCoffeeRocks
@SandCoffeeRocks 7 ай бұрын
G'day Lori 👋🏻🐚 I live in Queensland, Australia, so the shells we have here are very different! It's also a different climate too; maybe more like Hawaii?? Hawaii get a lot of the same shells that we do, is what I mean. Most of these ones are so shiny because they are naturally shiny! The shells here are in top condition, and very good quality. For the Cowries, the snails that used to live inside of them would keep the shells super glossy with part of the body called a mantle. These cowries were collected before the shells lost their natural shine from being tumbled around in the sand and rocks. For the ones in this cabinet, I think I only put mineral/baby oil or maybe half a dozen shells to make them look nice; though that's more for bringing out the colours of they've calcified a little. But, to answer you question, I've mostly collected and displayed my very best shells here that have kelp their natural shine. For the two that I mentioned as "polished" they were ones I bought, and were polished with some kind of machine work. I hope that helps, but let me know if you have any other questions 🐌 Thank you so, so much for watching 🥰

G'day Hannah 👋🏻🐚 hello to a fellow Aussie 😀 I'm glad that you enjoyed seeing my collection; it really is my pride and joy. As for your question; I use a mixture of water and bleach (about 1:1 for the ratio) and let the shells soak in it for around 4-6 hours, but overnight is fine too. Just the cheapest bleach from the dollar store works fine. Make sure you remove any pebbles first so the liquid can get in there (some kind of metal pick works best), and then when you're done; rinse thoroughly with water. Always use gloves. Never bleach shells that are already shiny/glossy, nor shells with nacre/mother of pearl on them, like mussel shells or abalone. If some shells aren't that dirty, then just soap or dish soap and water would be okay if you want to give them a bit of a rinse. In any case, make sure ALL of the water inside of the shells is able to drain out and air out, otherwise they might go moldy. I made a video about it if you want to check it out: kzbin.info/www/bejne/eYHOfI1qntOqj5Isi=9PN1L3sEkGvS_3NO though not all of it might be relevant - I made the video a little offhandedly at the time to slot into my upload schedule during a shelling break 😅 Anyhoo! Thanks for watching 🥰

Beautiful collection! At 23:34, on the bottom shelf, in the middle of the bowl, to the right of your hand . . . what is the cream & white shiny spiral shell? I found one in Puerto Rico & haven't been able to identify it!
@SandCoffeeRocks
@SandCoffeeRocks 2 ай бұрын
G'day Carrie 👋🏻🐚 That spiral white and cream shell is the adeptly named Spiral Babylon; Babylonia spirata. I do wonder if I'm looking at the correct shell you've described (I'm looking at the little spotty cream/white shiny shell)... please let me know if I'm wrong about which shell I picked out from the description? I'm more than a little curious, because Babylon shells aren't actually found natively in Puerto Rico. To my knowledge, almost all of the shells in that bowl are from the Indo-Pacific region, rather than the West Indies. Let me know! And thank you so, so much for watching such a big tour of my shell cabinet today ❤

@@SandCoffeeRocks Thank you so much for your quick response! You were definitely looking at the right shell, and it is definitely a Spiral Babylon. I shelled every day for 26 days straight in Puerto Rico and found a ton of shells:, but only one Spiral Babylon. It was rolling around in the surf; but I wonder if somebody didn't dump it there. That'd be curious, though, as it is in perfect condition!

@@carriebothof2891 Wow, shelling for nearly a month straight in Puerto Rico; what an absolute dream! I’m glad that I spotted the right shell in the bowl to give you the name of. Hmm, as for why it was there on your side of the world, I suspect that I was dumped but not necessarily discarded in the way you’re imagining. Sometimes on the Facebook seashell ID groups, I person will show a shell that they found in the ‘wrong’ country, and the commenters on the post will often call it a “wedding shell” as an explanation. I don’t know the specifics, but apparently some shells like this are bought and used in some kind of beach-side wedding ceremony. I wouldn’t be surprised if that turned out to be the case for someone in Puerto Rico in the last several weeks. There is no way or knowing for sure though, so enjoy the little mystery of a sea shell that you have 😁🐚

@SandCoffeeRocks
@SandCoffeeRocks 7 ай бұрын
G'day Cathy 👋🏻🐚 Ahh, trust me, all of those shells are either chipper, cracked, calcified, broken, faded, or otherwise. They're really not worth the postage cost to send them anywhere, and for various other logistical reasons; I'm just going to give them back to the hermit crabs. I know this isn't what you were hoping for though... But if you'd like, I can recommend some reputable sellers of nice quality shells at reasonable prices that would actually be worth the postage? Let me know and I'll go and find their links again. Thank you so, so much for watching this big display cabinet tour today 🥰

I would like to mention two that I generally think of as cheap and/or good value that ship internationally (I believe)... but, saying that, I think the postage cost will be a big consideration to you because these two sellers are based in Australia, and it very quickly becomes expensive.

G'day Scuba Beck, thank you for reaching out to me! For a shell trade, I must say that I'm not quite up for another one any time soon 😅 For the shells that don't go into my cabinet, I do put them aside to send to friends and whatnot...and I sent at least a thousand away to various people over Christmas, while also lining up other people to receive shells this year for various reasons too. So, while I collect a lot, I also have a lot of current and future shells that are already spoken for 🤣 so I wasn't planning to think about setting up a shell trade with anyone new in quite a while. I've also had a few other people who've reached out last year that I've also given this news to, too. Thank you for the invitation though, I will keep you in mind for when I feel ready for another one 🏖️ until then, I hope you have a fantastic next trip out to the beach! Thanks for watching 🥰
