Shell to Sell its Onshore Oil Drilling Business in Nigeria for $2.4 Billion | Vantage with Palki Sharma
Oil giant Shell is selling its onshore oil drilling business in Nigeria for $2.4 Billion. They are selling their existing facilities and 18 drilling leases to a consortium made up of mostly local firms. The onshore operations seem to be worth far more than what Shell is selling them for. Why is Shell selling its onshore Nigerian business? Why is it beneficial for both Shell and the locals? Palki Sharma tells you more.

Am Nigerian and this is the best news this year.. Shell's business activities in Nigeria have been horrible to Nigeria esp the environment. Their drilling activities for 100 years destroyed a lot of the environment esp in Ogoni land and other parts of the Niger Delta region_ the oil and gas producing region of Nigeria where I hail from. Worst thing about Shell is their arrogance, lack of transparency, in accounting for crude oil sales, corrupt practices including oil thefts they are accusing others of, and indifference to the grievances of the local communities whose lands have been destroyed by their activities , affecting their livelihoods which is mostly fishing as its a riverine area. Shells atrocities in the country are just too many. Other major oil giants like Chevron and Mobil operate in Nigeria but Shell is the worst of them all To us in Nigeria, its goodbye to very bad rubbish. Only thing is they should have cleaned up the mess they caused before leaving our land

I retired from Shell after working in a Shell refinery for 25 years. I wasn't in the loop in the African circle, but I can tell you that Shell is selling their refineries in the US to turn it's attention to the natural gas business. China is converting many of their coal fired power plants to natural gas. The natural gas business is much less complicated than the oil business. I'm not making excuses for them, they screwed us when they sold our plant, I'm just commenting on where their business plan is heading.

I'm Nigerian, I've been hard on Palki Sharma on a previous post (not sure how Firstpost go to my algorithms, but I'm grateful), but I appreciate this perspective from her here. Renaissance Africa, which is a close to 100% owned NIGERIAN consortium, is purchasing Shell's assets. Together with Seplat and a number of other local petroleum companies, Nigeria's oil profits are more or less domesticated. This will also facilitate one of the world's largest refineries recently completed by Africa's richest man and Nigerian Dangote. As far as I'm concerned good news all around. Now when oil just keeps poring out of the self inflicted broken pipelines when Nigerians are literally breaking the oil pipelines and stealing the crude from the government the Africans will not be able to bother the WM and the BM doesn’t care anyway so it’s good for shell to get rid off that problem once and for ALL. 25 % of the entire Nigerian population lives off of the money they make from stealing crude from the government. Europa is washing their hands and moving towards more prosperous and intelligent ways of living off of energy without having to deal with people who live like this. Environmental friendliness? Maybe in the west, go to the place and see the atrocities committed by Shell, Exxon and their goons. They got away with it by bribing officials. They are responsible for oil contamination that have ravaged the locals and destroy their land. It is actually a good news for Shell, Exxon and all the foreign multinational stealing Nigerian resources to exit the country. The consortium buying should make sure Shell is responsible for cleaning all the spillage or charge them billions of dollars to clean the mess. There has been spillage neglect in this region for decades. No access to water in this region, the water table had been contaminated, the river has also been contaminated. All these are source of livelihood for the locals. Many have died due to neglect by Shell and other Oil companies in this region. It's time for Nigeria to explore and refine their resources, then sell the refined product to neighboring country. Billions of dollars worth of crude are stolen through backdoor by Shell, Exxon and the rest annually.

Gonna be a great time to be Nigerian Politician or up & coming Oligarch! Corruption will be HUGE! Nigerian public, will never see a dime. Maybe a few token schools/roads, etc but not going to help the common people.

The reason shell has stayed this long in Nigeria is because the government supports it, against the citizen's will. Citizens has been fighting off shell through Legal and illegal means for decades due to the company's illicit activities and extortion of resources, damaging local environment and leaving the local helpless and hopeless. Lastly, the competition with local companies is becoming too high for shell to handle. Nigeria is the only African country that the local (Black Africans) owns the economy powerhouse. Nigerian economy is no joke! The local businessmen are smart and large-handed and very difficult to overpower in their own soil. Shell dominated from colonial advantage, but we all knew it wouldn't be so long.

Best comment and analysis. I used to tell people who cares to listen that Nigeria as an African country is a different ball game, when it come to control, politics and economy. The colonial legacies are wanning and our business and political environment, demands full control and the foreigners don't like to play or compete with indigenous businesses, because they see us as inferior, but we don't give a damn. The days MTN & Shoprite opened in Nigeria and they were making billions in revenue, I told some of my friends that it will only take 5 to 7 years and Nigerians will either take them over or compete with them. In the telecoms, Globacom was the first local company to confront MTN, disrupting their sector by introducing the per seconds billing, which almost knocked MTN & Econet out of their base...Today, the MTN Nigerian Franchise is majority owned by Nigerian, since it went public. Shoprite enjoyed initial monopoly and was doing brisk businesses, until some smart Nigerians started providing super retail shopping businesses, at smaller and similar business models, such as Justrite, Buyrite, Groccery & Bazzars, and so on...Shoprite revenue dropped & the sold out to a local business man. Shell and the other major oil players have no choice than to either remain and compete or sellout and give us room to fully control what belongs to us...This is Nigeria, the lGiant of Africa and we wont back down to any stranger on our own soil. *Yes, our heads may be bloody, but it will never be bowed.*

Hmmm...i am not sure whether to shout 'hurray!', or to be warry about this development. Shell passing the liability of the spill to the consortium is a nail on rhe coffin of cleaning the spill. I doubt if the spill will be cleaned completely given how we handle our issues as a country. I also fear militarisation of that region in the future in a bid to stem vandalism or quel agitations. I have mixed feelings about this deal.

The reason businesses have so much problem in Nigeria's local communities is because money in Nigeria is backside front. Local governments should be the first to see money from any local venture and the central government the last. In Nigeria this is the reverse, and usually it never makes it back down so the locals do stuff like these to get their share. There is nothing wrong with it at all, the fed that doesn't want to reform the system is 100% the problem. In every conceivable way the current system is either significantly less efficient, wasteful, or outright destructive to progress and the country will never work unless it is reformed.
