Good to see you back mac i used to order tools from you guys years ago i had to give up luthering sadly as hard times had hit I hope to get back in business again when i get more settled and workshoped out. learning trade guitar repair secrets was a great buzz during them years. keep repairing. A lot of us gave up the music scene and it's bad lifestyle years ago and retired to build and repair in the end

I'm experimenting with the Shellac flakes I purchased from Stew Mac and attempting my first French Polish; so far so good! High quality flakes that dissolve readily in alcohol (Everclear in this case), and keep nicely.

Question- I ebonized my swamp ash guitar to achieve a pebble look/color, I love it, however when I try to finish it with tru oil I loose my color and it just looks like wet wood. I need a finish that does not discolour the wood.....any thoughts? If I place a wet finger on the wood I loose the light gray color ....please help.

I have a question..i sanded a laquor guitar classical that got at at yard sale.it had house paint coverage the original finish..now the original finish is exposed.what do u recommend to regloss it up? Its fine sanded with 1000 grits.

I'm refinishing my 54 LP jr. and the Base was Shellac from Gibson. I know what it Smells and Taste like. What they used in the Day for grain filler. I also noticed that it's not Tobacco and TV yellow. Its Black and Bright Yellow with an Amber Lacquer Clear Coat. Back of the Neck was almost Natural finish not because of wear. Just the Shellac and Clear not Colors. Back had a Brown clear lacquer over the Shellac. Head stock and neck joint where Black. 3 inches up the Neck from the Body. Headstock, front and back Black Blended 1.5" into the neck. When I was 20 I messed up the paint. I wanted Sparkly Guitar. I'm 63 and Old enough to know how to fix it. I've Painted Aircraft for 42 years now. The last 35 at Beechcraft. In fact I'm painting a Nose panel over today and its break time. You Guys are the Best

Please tell me what kind of red colors I can add to my shellac to varnish my violin. Please refer to many colors because I am living in a small city without access to various materials. By doing so, I may find one of them. And please say your idea about saffron. Thanks.

Great work!!! i got a gibson lg 1 need a neck finish repair. can i use Shellac? the neck is finished with nitro

Shellac will likely not work over laquer. It dries hard and will likely flake off the nitro. There's a reason why finishes are done in a specific order and in specific combinations. Shellac over lacquer isn't one of them. Underneath as a sealer is fine, but not on top. ....You could experiment with a spray shellac but be prepared to reinvent the wheel and deal with failures. Nitro on nitro is easy peesy.

Martinlutherking- Im sorry, but unless you have been French polishing for many years, you are not a master of the art. It takes hundreds of hours of practice to master the technique.
