My family’s Russian recently passed away, since he got sick and the vets couldn’t do anything to help. I’m devastated. These videos (old as they might be) bring me some comfort knowing we did everything we could correctly in regards to husbandry. My mom took it the hardest, but I’m still distraught. Love these videos, thank you for this info. I think we’ll eventually have another, just to see what we can do even better for the little guys. ❤️

great video! many people see these creatures as easy to care for since they don’t seem like needy animals but there’s actually a lot that goes into caring for them. i’ve had two russian tortoises, i learned a lot from my first one and i wanna make sure i’m doing everything right the second time around. this was a big help! my tortoise is currently in a glass terrarium but now i feel inclined to make a wooden enclosure with plexiglass. thanks so much for putting all this information out there, keep it up buddy

@@michellegrossbach3641 , I'll do my best to help you with this little fellow. First the good news, if he was sick usually (not always) BOTH eyes would close up. Now you speak of maybe sand in his eye. I of course don't know your substrate but I hope it's not pure sand (which they often ingest by accident and can cause many issues) So here is my advice for the eye : Give him a warm bath daily this soaking allows him to water his eye externally to remove possible object. Second, run water over his head very low intensity, so to hot startle him (might withdraw head). This warm water will sooth him as well. Making sure with mild flow of water not to impede his nostril breathing. Last bit of good news Russians as a breed are very tough... so his recovery should happen. Please let me know either way. I do hope this helps you and your pet.

No offense, but you're just a kid from your KZbin channel. So I assume you mean your parents are going to buy you one, first of all, and second these tortoises can live for 50+ years. If your parents are going to get you one just for the hell of it, not knowing how much work goes into keeping one healthy, then they really shouldn't be getting you one. You need something easy to care for like a beta fish or a hamster. Not a Russian tortoise you'll end up neglecting or getting bored with that your parents will have to take care of until you either grow up and take full responsibility for it, it dies because y'all aren't really considering everything that will need to go into keeping it healthy, or your parents re-home it because they're sick of doing all the work and buying all the expensive stuff it'll need, such as UVB bulbs every 6 months or so. When I was a kid, I wasn't allowed to get anything unless I did ALOT of research and proved to my parents that I was serious about owning it. And then they'd make me wait forever to get whatever pet I wanted to make sure it wasn't an impulsive want, but that I was going to be serious about the animal I wanted. If I proved I knew what I was talking about, and that I was still serious about owning said animal, then if it wasn't anything crazy like a spider or scorpion, my parents would usually let me have it. I've owned fish, hermit crabs, mice, hamsters, cats, a bearded dragon, a tortoise now that I'm an adult, a ball python, etc, but I was one of the very few kids my age that knew how to care for whatever pet I owned. Please do your research. Metabolic bone disease is very common in neglected reptiles and it's irreversible, but is totally preventable and should be taken seriously.

I need to ask a few things... one is that my mom has had her tortoise in a aquarium since he was lil. So my mom passed, and I've been caretaker of Boris now. I've researched alot and Kno that a boarder should be on, so they can't see out! So I do this, and I'm not kidding when I say, He was UPSET! Started climbing all CRAZY on the glass like he was mad, mad! It was so bad that I took it down because he was going nuts, hitting his head on hideout that I was scared he was gonna get hurt! Could it be that, since he was baby, he's been able to see out, and that what he knows? I'm trying to do everything right cause he meant so much to my mother-i would love to talk to you, I enjoyed your video so much... I shared it in my tortoise forum on Facebook! Thank you for your video... and help me out a lil with answer of what you think . I would so appreciate it...

LOL as far as half logs go, And it might just be my tortoise but I have three logs in his enclosure and he loves the smallest one which isn’t too small for him but he is very snug inside of it and basically he never uses the nice big ones. Also I wanted to add instead of building a tank or buying an Expensive terrarium I used a giant kid pool like the big 6 foot round plastic ones That thing worked awesome and only cost me like 20 bucks

Hi. Can you tell me how deep to bury the fencing around the perimeter and how tall the walls need to be for Russian turtles? Newbie here. Thanks for such an informative video!
@RainyRed
@RainyRed 5 жыл бұрын
So I live in south central Texas, if I were to leave a Russian tortious outside once big enough. Is that better then leaving it inside? It does get fairly hot here. In the summer we easily reach 110 on a daily basis.
@cata6302
@cata6302 4 жыл бұрын
I live in Central Texas also!!!! I have a Russian tortoise and I'm thinking about moving him outside once it gets warmer here. He's in a 60 gallon now, but he loves being outside and our temperatures here are about the same kinds of temperatures Russian tortoises are used to. As long as you have shared hide areas that the tortoise can go into to get cool during the day and a good sized water dish and possibly a heated box/hide area in case Texas wants to be crazy as always and you have a random night where it gets a little too cool, then you should be good to go!
@cata6302
@cata6302 4 жыл бұрын
One thing though, is if you leave it outside, I'd suggest setting it up so that the tortoise is covered. We have one of those big chain link dog kennel things in our backyard that has like this canvas tarp covering over the top, and I'm thinking about moving it to a grassy area and setting it up for him so that he's in a fenced enclosure so that Hawks and the bigger birds around here dont try to get him, but also so that he doesn't go to close to our fence where our neighbor has three dogs that could possibly get to him if he got too close.
