Thanks for coming along. There are different shells washing out there depending on the ocean currents. After a bad storm you can find bigger and different ones. Most of the ones in this video are very common to the Crystal coast.

Awesome shells. The one skeletons of the Welk shells looked like the handle of a fancy sword handle guard. The standard shells for lack of better word are so beautiful. Oh how wish I could have gone with you. I would have gone Welk crazy. Awesome video as always. Thanks so for sharing and giving me a vacation thru this video. I had fun with you! Wow, what a groovy trip. Real nice shells you got there. It'd be worth going just for the boat ride, but those are some beautiful finds.
@basiatoday18727 жыл бұрын
Hi Tim, they have different trips you can take, some just take you out there to different islands but you don't get off the ferry. There are 2 that actually take you where you can get off and walk around. This was the Shackleford ferry and another goes to Sand dollar island.

Hi David, yes, it was fun except when it rained and everyone got soaked! Lots of shells there every day and there are different shells that roll in depending on the ocean currents. My search was for whelks, sand dollars and scotch bonnets. The island looks beat up and desolate so not sure how those Spanish ponies survive & thrive out there.

High surf tomorrow due to Hurricane Maria. Go early on the first boat or later on in the day before low tide. You probably will get some really big ones!

Oh yeah, bring bags!
@michaelfutch93827 жыл бұрын
Ok, thanks for the info. How early would you suggest going?
@basiatoday18727 жыл бұрын
The first boat goes out at 8:30AM. That was when I went out there. The tide was just right for me, it was low and about to turn. Tomorrow morning the low will be at 4:44 AM and the high at 11:04 AM. So, either first thing in the morning or wait until 3PM so you can be there for the 2nd low tide. Keep in mind that this hurricane will keep the water higher and rougher. Have fun!

Awesome shells! Is Shackleford the island with the wild horses also?
@basiatoday18727 жыл бұрын
Yes, Shackleford ponies live there, 140 adult horses and 6 new colts, they made it to the island from Spanish shipwrecks many years ago. Not sure how they have survived and thrived on this island but they are doing just fine.

That was a nice change of pace and very interesting. I have a shell collection around here somewhere, from several trips to Florida. First trip back I had to tie the collection to the back bumper it stunk so bad. Buried it all in sand when I got home and recovered it later, all cleaned up.

No, cannot detect there, too bad as I think there are some great treasure there! Imagine all that Spanish gold just sitting there on that beach, I thought about that a lot! Thanks Basia enjoyed the trip, I traveled all over the World during my Military Career and did a lot of scuba diving, underwater photography and I collected sea shell, so did my Father, He had a very valuable collection, mine is not bad, If you ever get the chance to go to Panama OMG they have beautiful shells there and most are eaten by the locals, anyway there is one sea shell that is indigenous to North Carolina, its called the spotted deer cowrie, rarely will you find this shell on the beach, if one happens to wash up it won't be there long. It is a prize to any collection. Here is a copy of the New Paper that posted the article on all the Wheat Pennies we found.
