My father always delighted in hearing from jazz pianists and fans of his music, and I love it too! He was the funniest, most clever man I've ever known. Oh, how I still miss him! He left us ten years ago this June... If you're ever in Europe, give me a jingle and we can get together! :)

Yes he was a great piano player. And because of this fact it is not surprising to hear that he was also a great person & a great father. Greatness & goodness are complemenntary traits and are also character traits found in the great philosophers and great scientists of all-time. I remember reading someplace that your dad was the only person who showed up at the cemetary when Chet Baker was returned to LA for buriel. This shows that your dad was a great musician.

@adeduction Thank you so much for your kind comments. Yes, my father did show up for Chet's burial because, even though they had business clashes, he respected Chet as a great musician. My father was very involved in the Los Angeles Musicians' Union for many years, and he was on their board of directors. He always fought hard for musicians to receive the money that they earned and deserved, such as residual and royalty payments. Shelly and my Dad were best friends. He was like my uncle!

@adeduction Russ Freeman was certainly one of the all-time great jazz pianists. Plus, he was the best Dad a daughter could ever wish for. :) ~from one of Shelly Manne's Men's Girls...

I too like the 'At the Blackhawk' (in SF) albums with Gordon & Feldman - but the two 'At The Manne Hole' albums with Condoli & Freeman are also really great albums. Condoli could play. Check out Stan Getz's great album 'West Coast Jazz' with Condoli, Manne, Lou Levy & Leroy Vinnegar. It's a great album because Condoli's playing is 'up there' at a high level with Getz.
