Shelly Plus 1PM Mini | Wiring & Setup | Home Assistant Integration

A look at a new Shelly product from their new MINI Range of Smart Switches / Relays. I look at the Power Monitoring version, the Shelly 1PM Mini.
Shelly devices are a great smart home addition for automating lights and appliances. And they work fully locally! No need for the cloud if you don't want to; but if you do, then that option is available to you too.
It has the usual integrations of Google, Alexa, SmartThings and more.

Nice video. About the bluetooth proxy, keep in mind that the Shelly plus devices do not support active connections in Home assistant at the moment, it only relays advertisements (passive mode). Re-flashing with ESPhome also did not work on the Plus 1 mini PM.

I actually didn't realise that active mode wasn't working with them, so thanks for that info! I think active connections are pretty intensive on the board. So when you flash with ESPHome and Bluetooth Proxy config it also didn't work for active connections?

I got mine last week and added it to my 3d printer, so I can track power usage and turn it off remotely :) I see yours came with the beta firmware too. There's an firmware update though.

Thanks for making this video. I did struggle to follow the wiring instructions for the simple switch and I thought a close up would have helped. Surprised to hear MQTT no longer being used. Can you still use MQTT for other devices?

Thanks for the comment! I agree the wiring for the single switch was a bit tricky to follow and tricky to record to be honest. Probably could have shown it on the desk outside of the rig. I put the Shelly wiring diagram to the right at one point to try and help a little. Yes, MQTT is still supported by Shelly, so if you're linking your Shelly devices to Node-RED for example then you could use MQTT.

Thanks for the video. I am interested in the pure monitoring Shelly PM Mini as I do not need the switch/relay functionality and am looking to monitor a device that should have peak power below 16A. A few people have suggested I stick with the Shelly EM + clamps as they think the Mini won't be comfortable with consistent load around 10A.

Hi, thanks for the comment! I would say the suggestions are wise. The mini version is rated at 8A max, versus 16A for the non-mini version. Anything pulling 10 amps or more for a prolonged period, I don't recommend using any smart switches or relays really. A shelly EM would be better I would say, but they are more costly. For example if you're using a 13A/16A smart plug for a kettle then generally I would say it's okay because it's for a couple of minutes. But if it is for a heater that could be on for hours then the components inside can get very hot and risk of fire. Shelly devices do have a lot of protection features though and seems to go through quite a lot of certification tests, so I would trust using one of those more than say some random brand off Aliexpress. What are you planning on measuring the power of?

@@lets-automate I have also discovered the Eastron SDM230 WiFi today which might be a better option than the Shelly EM as it's MID approved and hopefully more accurate than a CT clamp based energy monitor.

Hello, congratulations on your video. I can't add the new shelly mini and an addon for the shelly pm with a temperature sensor. I can't understand what the error is! Do you have to change anything in the yaml file or on the shelly device?

Hey. Thank you! Sorry, where are you getting an error? When you say add-on for the Shelly PM, do you mean the integration in Home Assistant for Shelly is not working for you? Or have you flashed your Shelly with ESPHome?
