Why are the first floor joists designed they way are? I think I'm seeing OSB and some dimensional lumber on the ends. I am an absolute amateur, but I wouldn't have thought OSB would be strong in compression.

They are called engineered floor trusses also know as I beams... they are lighter and stronger then traditional timber and can span greater distance with out needing a beam under them for support. Have them in my house... they span 24" with no support except the ends... which is nice because only the front and back walls are load bearing
