Based on the Urdu short story 'Aanandi' by Pakistani writer Ghulam Abbas. Mandi The Marketplace deals with a brothel located in the heart of a city. Some politicians of the district want the place for its prime location. They mask their personal gains and protest against the brothel in the name of morality. The politicians offer to put up an alternative residence for the prostitutes, only this place is miles away, isolated from the city. Will the Rukmini Bai (Shabana Azmi) and the other workers of the brothel agree?

Watched this film in Karachi on VCR in 80's. Indian art films were extremely popular in Karachi then . Movies like Mandi, Junoon, Akrosh, Bazar, Khandar and several others starring Naseer uddin Shah, Shabana Azmi, Smita Patel, Om Pouri and Farooq Sheik and also Deepthi Noel. There was a brilliant film in which Shabana Azmi with her husband takes a herd of cattle to Kolkatta and try to survive on the streets, dont know the name of the film and could never find it again, it was just wonderful like Mandi.

In terms of dialogues/ script is undoubtedly exceptional but it doesn't makes sense when the girl zeenat runs away in oblivion as Ghulam Abbas beautiful masterpiece "Anandi" paints the Society's hypocrisy on the canvas of religion and human greed. Where the brothels are the productive part of it, whose economic gain is purified but the commodity is victim of ostracization. Other than that it is excellent.
