The first game is set in a small corner of Yokosuka, including the suburbs of Sakuragaoka and Yamanose and Dobuita, a busy high street with shops, bars, restaurants, and arcades. It’s the 1980s after all. Ryo doesn’t know who killed his father-only that he’s Chinese, wears an elaborate silk coat with a dragon on it, and drives a black car. And so, armed with this information, he wanders his hometown looking for clues. Much of your time in Shenmue is spent on the street asking people questions. Most of them won’t know anything, but the ones who do will trigger further lines of questioning, slowly unravelling the story and leading Ryo down an increasingly dark, dangerous path.

@@Beautifulcomments Some of the places were taken from Yokosuka and a few areas are from Tokyo i think. In one behind the scenes video there was a map that showed some of the areas. I was in Yokosuka in 2009 and it really didn't matter if i saw an exact spot or not because everything around there was exactly like in the game. I saw similar parks, housings, parking lots, motorcycles and barber shops, flower shops, yokohama harbour from a distance and pretty much everything. Phantom riverstone has a free pdf map to help with visiting there. I definately need to go there again as soon as possible because it was amazing. When i was there i stopped in front of a muay thai club and i was looking in and the owner came out to chat with me and i told him i practise muay thai in my country and he asked if i wanted to spar with one of their students but for some reason i said no thanks and i've regretted it because sparring in Yokosuka/Dobuita is a Shenmue thing but i guess also is denying the opportunity because you can do that in Shenmue too :) Visiting Japan is full of Shenmue moments. Like asking for directions and noticing a bunch of different things in real life that are in the game. One cool moment was when i was buying capsule toys in front of a shop just to get a Shenmue experience and i almost left but came back for one more and the owner of the shop noticed it and came outside the shop and gave me a few extra capsule toys :) it wasn't exactly from getting a high score from Hang On but close enough :) And i also saw an eagle flying near the Yokosuka harbour :)

Shenmue and Ocarina of Time were the most immersed I have been in a game to date. Shenmue means A LOT to me. I love it dearly. You didn't just play it, you LIVED it.

No other game has attempted this genre since, just the 3 Shen Mue games. It's a shame because it feels like such a unique experience, like you're living inside the game world. With modern tech, they could do so much more with this type of game. Bigger towns with many more explorable buildings, higher detailed objects. If done right, a modern game like this could take 5+ years to develop but it would be the most immersive game ever made.

One of the finest gaming experiences I've ever had. The soundtrack was a huge factor in that. Yokosuka actually felt alive, which is not something a lot of games have been able to emulate. That and the game imparted a feeling that has stayed with me all these years.

This game completely blew me away when I first played it; my jaw literally dropped. I transitioned from Super Nintendo to the Dreamcast, so the change in graphics was massive, and this happened to be my very first 3D game. I thought the 3D characters were so lifelike, lmao. Its crazy how unbelievably detailed this game is for the time of the release . I remember how hyped this was . I finaly played it on my brothers dreamcast and i dident understand the story at the time but i got the ps1 that xmas ans i was like huh ! The ps1 is new but why do the graphics / realistic events and mini games and loads of things to do in shemue not match the newer ps1 games ... It just goes to show the legit love for a game is not poured into it u wont have simular results . Sega made so many internal errors it was unreal - but this was not one of them . U could make a movie on this games development alone .

Back in the days where there was no stupid minimap to tell you exactly where to go to move forward, the days where the player had to figure out through reading the diary, asking npcs and look at the in game static maps. Today's game machanics are designed in a lazy way as devs are purely relying on putting "points of interest" on the map, making them a boring "follow the UI to continue" paradigm. Glad I have Shenmue 2-3 because I'd been pissed as a kid knowing this was the ending for 1 after all the game put you through.
