DIY Pig Castration - No Expensive Vet Bill
We received a call from a viewer of the channel asking if they could come to our farm and watch us castrate piglets. He has some new boar piglets that need to be castrated and has never experienced the process.
Since we don't have any piglets, and aren't going to have any for a while, we'll do the next best thing.......go to his farm and help him do it!
Join us as we ride to a neighbor farm and help/show them how to effectively and quickly castrate some 8 week old piglets.

Great instruction. I have watched quite a few of your videos and know that you raise KuneKune pigs. That is what we have, and I have been told that you have to be more carful with KuneKune castrations. Do you still pull the same way or cut the spermatic cord? I also just read a thread where they said they scraped behind the testicle to separate the cord instead of just cutting it to reduce the amount of bleeding. BTW, the Chinese pig you were thinking about is called the Meishan. I watched a video about castrating them the same as you did, but the Vet used AluShield (Aerosol Bandage) afterwards. I think the reason the pigs drag their buts with the Blu-Kote is because it stings a bit like isopropyl alcohol.

Back in England my father would both clip the teeth of the piglets and castrate them. He would wipe the area with an antiseptic and when finished would squeeze in a little Savlon cream in each cut. In Australia doing hundreds of sheep, they would use an antiseptic dusting powder.

Well, there’s something you don’t see or talked about much on KZbin. I’ve never seen this done before and after the first couple I started feeling bad for some of them and cringing. I’m more of a hands on guy and think I’d do better if I was there involved in the process. One of these days I’ll be doing that with my own pigs, but that’s a few years off since I won’t be able to raise any just yet. Interesting learning how to do this and add to my own knowledge of what it takes for farming as I didn’t personally grow up on one. Once I retire from the military, my plan is to takeover my family’s farm in LA and raise chickens and pigs.

My scrotum hurts after watching this video! 😱 OMG!!! My neighbor just texted me and told me not to get alarmed, when a death curdling crie comes from his farm, because he's getting ready to castrate his boar hog. Sure enough....that sound came shortly after he did the deed. He also slaughters his own hogs, once they've reached full maturity and size. That's another episode! Yikes!! Farm life 🚜 is tough stuff!!! I applaud farmers. We homestead, grow crops, etc., but no hogs yet.

Apparently pigs don't do well with anesthesia. Some kind of professional animal person (vet?) said it can make them very sick, so that's interesting about the UK. Even that numbing ointment the dentist rubs on your gum, before a needle, might take a bit of the pain out of it for them.

Good video, but I think that they should be done at 3-10 days of age. I have to be notified by that time if someone wants a registered boar, if not, they all get cut. I only sell registered breeding stock. I raise Red Wattles, and only sell registered breeding stock, barrow feeder pigs, and whole and half meet hogs. I would have stuck a needle in shallow on the one with the fluid and tried to drain some in a syringe to see what it was. Just a thought. The larger the testicles get the more painful it gets, and traumatizing. The issues just grow with time. Call a vet if needed.
