Thanks. Great advice! You brilliantly taught at least a semester of business school in a few minutes.

I have watched a video where a person explained how to price. He uses a factor of 3. First -1/3- stock and feed cost second 1/3- your marketing and last 1/3- labor & profit. See how much a chicken cost per pound and multiply it by three and that will be your selling price. Pork should be the same I think

I price to be at 50% profit. Recently switched from a custom blend feed to a more expensive crumble but they were picking out so much feed from the custom blend that I was wasting a lot of my feed. Seems like the pork will have a better margin than the chickens but I can also turn the chickens every 8 weeks as opposed to 5 months. Also, my pricing when I started was 10 or 15% higher than the conventional chicken in our retail market and I couldn’t give away my pastured product. Switch the price to 30 or 35% higher to give me a larger profit margin to help with cash flow to purchase the next flock and feed and all of a sudden I sell plenty. My thought is you want to price your product to focus on that customer that IS NOT price shopping. I lost every time I tried to attract the price shopper. Those customers do not care about pasture raised, nutrition stats, etc so it is better just to forget trying to attract them altogether.

Another great video! No you weren't rambling. I am getting my first pigs on Monday 5/31. Going start a Facebook page for the farm and my daughter wants to start a KZbin channel to show what our farm is about weekly videos about the day to day workings of the farm. Thanks again.

With social media, ensure you have all your ducks in a row. Permits, licenses, and animal shelter. There are Karen's that have nothing better to do than call the county or state on you and yours. Other than that good luck and enjoy.

That is a well thought out method that many in small business don’t go through and thus short themselves and in turn hurt the market in which they operate. Keep up the great informational videos Chuck! Tim

Hey Chuck very informative video. Thanks for sharing your perspective. I’m pretty much using your same approach… figuring out my cost and what I would like to make to grow my farm. For me, kind of looking at what the competition is doing helps to make sure I’m competitive and can earn the business. To your point, there are lots of variables that we all have to consider.

Could you be more specific regarding marketing? What do you guys do and how much time do you put into it? How are you pricing wholes and halves since feed costs are unpredictable? Are you non GMO or conventional feed? I enjoyed the "rambling" talking!

So this raises the question then. How do you answer the question people raise when Joe farmer down the road sells a hog for less than you can efficiently raise a pig for? Not a small amount either, like Less than typical feed costs would take to get it there. For example differences I've seen is genetics of the hog, quality of life and in this area (south alabama) allot of folks think it's ok to just raise them on straight corn.

That’s the problem I’m running into in Tennessee. A lot of people want to buy a weaned pig for $50 and expect it’ll be cheap to raise it to butcher age. And they balk at the price I would charge for halves/wholes. It’s not cheap to raise an animal properly and they never consider the cost of housing/feed/equipment/time and effort...

We figure out how much it costs us to raise the animal then we add our desired profit margin to it. And back figure everything.

Don't forget to factor taxes into your equation. Uncle Sam and your friends in state government, will take a cut. Gross and net profit before and after taxes very different.

My eBay method is to look at recent sales and start 10% higher. If my item is better than the highest sold, I add another 10%. If my last item was the highest sold, I add 10% . Then I drop my price 10%/month until it sells. Obviously you can't use this method for perishables and it isn't valuable with repeat customers, but it's useful when nobody knows what the price should be.

The market determine the price not the producer . That's basic Capitalism .You can charge for your product as much as you want but if the consumer can find the same item and quality at a lower price somewhere else you business will fail .
@McRod-13 жыл бұрын
The "market" includes both sellers (producers) and buyers. So your understanding of basic capitalism is half flawed.
@ketothekat88113 жыл бұрын
@@McRod-1 You are right . what I was trying to say is that the market is control by the consumers not the producers .
