I don't know if kids 10 years after the UFC beginning really understood how unbelievably jaw dropping it was to watch the same day, tournament bracket style, multiple fight, everything but biting, on and on fill in the blank bad ass the first few were!!!!! I just thought boxers had the worst haters, and then there was the superhero Royce Gracie!!!!!!!!!! over the years I've brought it up now and then to people who weren't interested in the history of the first PPV UFC......and you see the shock in their eyes hearing it. at first they don't believe it was bare knuckle or groin shots allowed but then you can show them parts of the reality thanks to the internet.......but they still really don't get it cause they didn't watch it live. they have a time accepting there were no weight classes and especially in a winner advances to the next round, that same day!. then my main focus turns to the 178lb 6ft 1inch Royce Gracie....and some truly dangerous cats that were much bigger than Royce he had to submit, multiple times in the same night to be champion. the unbelievable resolve, courage, strength, pride, and stamina that he displayed. the icing was how you could see the frustration which turned to fear and then panic from some dangerous cats when Royce had them like a giant anaconda and you knew the end was near. won't name them, just go back and study the film. That Gracie family is pretty sly, I don't believe the reasons that have been given as to why Royce was the representative........................from what I witnessed, there's no doubt they knew at that particular time in the early 90s that Royce was a straight up killer! some kind of superhero assassin. yep, my take is kinda extreme, but honey, at that time 100% justified. I point to the explosion of the world's interest in Gracie jiu jitsu and the opposition to Gracie jiu jitsu as fact. Royce, it's not even an argument, even the haters make up the lamest excuses....jiu jitsu, is the most effective self defense when it's one on one.

This is interesting but had Hickson been chosen to fight in the UFC he would have been a house hold name and even a bigger legend in the States since his fights with Severn, Shamrock, and possible future fights against Mark Coleman, Don Frye would have epic in America. I think for marketing purposes Royce was the right choice, but in terms of fights inside the octagon Hickson's fights would have been legendary.

@LORDVADER357 Жыл бұрын
Because it was setup to be as easy as possible for Gracie to win. They had slippery as ice floor. If Ken had the shoes will slam Gracie in 2 seconds. Just lift it and slam it. In the second match - the rematch Ken have shoes and pinned down Gracie. Gracie was beaten very bad. Still referee call it a draw. And in the third encounter in Belator Gracie hit Ken in the balls/ groins and finish him with punches on the ground. Gracie Ju Jitzu never actully worked for determined pro level fighters like Ken Shamrock.

It was setup. All ods was in favor of Gracie. Oponents was not allowed to wear wrestling shoes. Floor is slippery as ice. They put lots of smoke and fireworks on the astma fighters. Gracie lies down and since floor is as sliperry as frozen polished surface fighters had very hard time to get up. Gracie was allowed to do anything with his uniform. Even choke the fighter with the belt. Also fighters was not allowed to touch the fence. So they practicaly cant get up. Ken Shamrock win the rematch but referee call it a draw.

Except in a cage with rules and gloves is not the real world...It is all cookie cutter sport fighting. Try that BJJ/MMA shit in the street with multiple attackers with weapons and see what happens. That shit only works in the cage with rules. The UFC was structured for the Gracies to win and was nothing more than an advertisement for their style. A fake fantasy land, not the real world. Ken Shamrock proved that in his recent interviews when he said they took his shoes away and his brother kept adding time for Royce.

Royce Gracie has been a shameless cheater for all his life, coming from a family of spineless mobster assassins. (look into the Rufino dos Santos story to find out the roots of their real tradition). He always found a way to cheat and win. Ken is the real legacy among those two, a fighter who never stepped away from any challenge, a humble and kind man also.

So sad. What I hear from this interview about Gracie Jujitsu is bully mentality, superficiality, no moral or character development to go along with skill development leading to lob-sided human potential development, arrogance not humility, no sportsmanship, small-minded vision, selfish ambition, and disrespect consistent with “tough guy” mentality. Unfortunately, the root of the tough man out to prove himself is the insecure boy unsure of himself. The bully and the wimp are one and the same. As he acknowledged in the interview, he acted liked a jerk. Poor role model in my opinion. He also acknowledged that UFC was a commercial for Gracie Jujitsu and people fell for it. Time will reveal true nature of things, and all things fade away like dust in the wind.
