I was fortunate to be at Epsom for the Derby that year, along with my father. I remember placing a one-hundred-pound bet at evens on Shergar. That was a week's wages for me back then, working as a bartender in London. When Shergar broke free from the rest of the horses, it gave me goosebumps. Shergar made the other horses look like they were running in slow motion. The jockey Walter Swinburn and I were the same age back then. It's an awful shame that Shergar was taken.

He didn't pay because he didn't believe the horse was still alive. The gang couldn't provide convincing proof and Aga Khan was right by all accounts.

No they did not and he was not killed in 1983 but was running races under the identity of another horse in 1987.
