Dear Friend: Good morning: Recently I shared a song that helped me release tears locked inside “Hold me while I cry” by Karen Peck. I remember when I would visit my parents when they were alive and my father would always take me for a ride as the scenery in New Brunswick was always beautiful. I knew those were times my dad wanted me to share my struggles but I never could. He never pressed and our conversations steered away from soul touching things regarding myself. Through out raising my girls I wanted to offer that same opportunity for them allowing them to come to me on their terms not prying. I realize what my dad offered in those rides was the respect in allowing me to confide what I was able to and when and if I was ready. He mirrored the heart of God and Gods desire that He wanted us to share our struggles and burdens and His patience in waiting until an individual felt secure enough to trust Him with the things that hurt me deeply and could grasp His unconditional love personally. Perfection is not expected on your parenting journey. I have had days when I was dealing with heavy, soul-crushing issues. I had days when nothing I did seemed to be good enough. I had days when smiles didn’t come easy and harsh words were spoken too quickly. I had days when I managed the basics and nothing more. On those days, I urge you to not to believe the lies like I began, that “I was a failure” and that “I was a bad parent.” I urge you to, instead, garner the strength, patience, and resolve to do one thing-just one thing: Listen. Someday your children will find themselves in difficult situations, and they’ll have to choose to suffer in silence or to speak up. Perhaps those will be the moments they will remember our eyes, the nodding of our heads, our thoughtful responses. Suddenly they will be reminded that their voices have value.
