I unfortunately spent a weekend in the Maricopa jail like 7 years ago courtesy of an expired license plate, lol and no….that is not what they served. For the first 24 hours they give you a sack lunch twice that is bread, peanut butter and grapefruit juice and on day two when you have been processed etc., they give you a small tray that is akin to something they would give just out of surgery that wouldn’t fill a 5 year old. The entire time they let you know that they are aware of how shitty the food is and that if you want to eat it, don’t get arrested…lol. (The judge had me released when he found out I had a clean record and had been deployed when my tags expired….I had only been back stateside about 12 days).

@@Dj.MODÆO it really annoys me when these top officials say “if you don’t like the food, don’t commit crimes”….. Studies have shown time and time again that half of all “criminals” in jail are mentally ill. I had a friend with bipolar disorder and every few years she has an episode and gets thrown in jail instead of getting mental help in a hospital. I remember when she was arrested for “stealing a shower”! So she was very confused one day and ended up knocking on a strangers door. She asked if she could use the phone or something. She then asked to use the restroom. She ended up picking herself in the bathroom and took a shower. The owner was weirded out by it and called the cops and she was arrested. It’s sad because when she’s on her medication she’s totally normal and is so embarrassed by her actions when she’s not on her meds.

You know, I absolutely agree, that if you don't want to starve or eat dog food, don't commit crimes. But I personally think Arizona's jail/prison food takes this to an extreme. I've done some reading on it. First off, they only serve two meals a day. With something like a 16 hour gap between dinner the night before and lunch. I just think that in itself is sad. Second, I read somewhere that the average meal cost per meal in the prison systems is around $2. That's NOT gourmet on ANY level obviously. But in Arizona, average jail meal cost around 50 cents! Arpiao also bragged that he got the cost down because he quit giving any meat to inmates. Instead they get soy based food. So with only 2 meals a day, soy based protein. I don't know. Seems pretty cruel. Also, how much you wanna bet, that those trays presented (that they knew would be on TV) are probably double portions. Or better than average in some regards. I'd LOVE for someone to take those trays presented and one to an inmate and ask if this is what's average meal looks and tastes like. I have a feeling nobody did. Plenty of non violent people go to jail , some are completely innocent. They are forced to be there.. it's just mean to be THAT cheap to anyone. Not to mention the prisoners allergic to soy.. they are extra screwed. Lots of these corrupt politicians make food budget cuts in prisons and the people running the prisons get to keep (personally) these savings. Some of it is done illegally but I think some of it is allowed. The prison system is corrupt AF. The state one's and private profit making one's. These are human beings.

So many unused bags littering the holding tanks. Few could eat it because it had turned so they just left it and starved for the week. What I remembered most about the holding tanks were the wild temperature variations. In cells so cramped everyone had to stand and never sleep they shut off the air conditioning. It was sweltering. In the lesser crowded tanks the air conditioning was at full throttle and no one had any clothing or blankets to shield themselves. And they also could never sleep. This wasn't an accident. It was textbook crowd control to keep people compliant. You become so exhausted you cannot think or be anything other than a robot.

I was in Maricopa county jail for almost two weeks, and as a skinny mofo I had to eat what was provided even if I found it disgusting, which I did. I would choke down these trays of slop immediately after getting them because they space the meals out over 16 hours, and by the end of my two weeks when the judge released me, I couldn’t even feel any happiness or relief because of how sick the food had made me. I was having diarrhea and throwing up this extremely foul dark liquid. When I was in the actual release tank I met a guy who had been working in the kitchens for months and he claimed that rats would frequently taint the food, and the non innate workers would often just send it out anyways. 99% of county jails hire a third party company Aramark to prepare the jails food, with this jail being one of them. They all have a typical menu for all jails, that's who should have this issue with. This issue actually is wrong as the inmates are losing out. These companies are paid per tray, lets say $0.50 per tray. They use inmates as employees so cuts on labor only having to pay 1 person to over see things. So they need to earn profit from this minus this 1 employee and cost on food. Its on average $0.20 cost per tray in food and another $0.05 for the manager, which is $0.25 profit per tray or 50% profit is really good. What's wrong is either 1 why are they run their own kitchen since the inmates are the ones doing the actual work. That way the inmates will get food twice as good because they can spend that quarter on food cost, and shut off the tunnels. Or they can keep the same meals except save the tax payers of the county money by cutting the jails food budget. Makes no sense on how they can justify this. Its a blatantly obvious example of govt corruption and example of kick backs for these companies, an elected official's gratitude to those who donated to their campaign coffers. Seems the officer let 2nd shift deal with releasing me, look at 4chan how they handled this situation.

By the second week you'll be eating everything on the tray because you're so hungry. You get 1 slop tray for dinner Monday through Friday For breakfast you get 1 sac lunch containing 1 apple, 1 roll, a pack jelly maybe 1 tablespoon in it. A pack pb with many 5 tablespoon in it. And a pack of cookies contains 2 cookies. And 1 kids size milk box. Saturday and Sunday you get 2 sac lunches per day. 1 for breakfast with milk. 1 for dinner no milk The nutrition values is far below that of what a human needs to survive. Prison is suppose to be rehabilitation to correct a person. High carbs, high sugar and lack of protein and vitamins food is causing harm to inmates physically and mentally I’m not saying feed them steak and shrimp but can the meals at least provide nutritious meals that will have a positive effect on their bodies. The punishment is being outcast from society and losing the freedom of everyday normal life. Just because someone is in prison they are still considered humans so feed them food that has nutritional values.

Actually in Maricopa county jails you get two meals a day, the first one being a stale roll with peanut butter and then an apple or an orange, and on weekdays you get a “hot” meal of slop for dinner. On weekends you just get another roll with peanut butter. So two meals a day, and only one of those is sometimes “hot”.
