I guess sus chords are always "going somewhere" (the tonic is seriously unmoored) and the bass is the only clue that might indicate where that might be, which might be a very odd place, and the "ugliness" comes from realising that, despite the confidence of the performance, we're not going somewhere friendly: "Damn, the car broke down and now it's raining. Didn't we see a castle back there?"
