I've been thinking about this SO much lately. Like who did the soundtrack for this game? Is it normal for Roblox games to have insane soundtracks? Does Dress to impress even have the budget to hire someone to make music of this quality? I need answers this video is so necessary, even if it focuses more on the music theory.
@maplebananАй бұрын
I agree with all these questions, a lot of the higher-quality games on Roblox (that aren’t solely based off of gambling or some other cheapskate way to make cash) have INCREDIBLE osts and the composers that come with it! I honestly love this new generation of Roblox games because of the incredible composing improvements and at this point, I don’t even know if they want a budget All these Roblox games have their soundtrack and quality wayyyy higher from old Roblox, and I wonder how many of these Roblox composers could also be composers for indie games or small game dev teams in the future
@CadenceHiraАй бұрын
I've actually done music for a Roblox game before! afaik most of the time it works exactly like getting hired to write music for any other non-roblox game. Just judging by the sheer volume of players and amount of possible microtransactions ingame I assume DTI makes insane money, and they actually replaced the soundtrack a bit after the game's launch so I assume they had a pretty good budget for music.

ds music was composed to be played on tiny speakers so they made weird but cool stuff with that limitation of the speaker that was low in volume and only could make mid frequencies. so the ds music was made very loud without much room for the tones to be dynamic in any way and usually just used the lowest sound that speaker can produce as the “low” part which was still kind of high. being limited really does make people create different but even better stuff

I feel like there’s no way you will see my comment, but: What you’re calling hybrid chords I have always identified as 11 chords. The first example of Db/Eb functions like an Eb11 but when you only have 4 voices/fingers/lines to work with (and ideally would be a V11 resolving to I, Ab in this case). With this context though… I have no idea what they function as lol. Thanks for opening my 25+ male eyes to this game and soundtrack.
@CadenceHiraАй бұрын
that's fair! hybrid chords with this voicing are functionally 11 chords, the difference in classification is just because of the lack of 3rd
@alphie1765Ай бұрын
True! It’s a weird dynamic. It definitely sounds different than a true 11 chord. And here it almost evokes a polytonal sound. Also your outfits ate, it’s the children who are wrong.
@jacobmillen751Ай бұрын
For me, part of the hybrid chords' charm is that what would've been the third of the 11th chord (for example the Gb over the Eb11) is left ambiguous and I feel like this gives it a distinct sound!

2:45 - When I was doing my audio engineering degree, our music theory ear training teacher who was himself an avid jazzer just called these "slash chords" or straight up "11". So if I were to write this in a lead sheed I would write Eb11 and assume everyone knows what I'm talking about, since you NEVER add the major 3 when there is also an 11 :D

Expanding that 332 rhythm out is always such a great idea… I’ve heard it called a Nashville triplet or tresillo. If a tresillo is 332, and a double tresillo is 333322, then a triple tresillo should be 333333332222. So that extended rhythm is a triple tresillo where the composer decided to be interesting and turn the first three “2’s” into two “3’s” instead. If I had to pick a key for the first section I would describe it as Eb mixolydian with mode mixture. Really glad you highlighted the piano melody in that theme’s return, those are PARALLEL MINOR NINTHS!

thank you for the kind words! unless i'm analyzing classical music, i generally prefer to use the more contemporary/jazz style of chord notation, since it allows for more consistency in the left to right flow of information (accidental->roman numeral->quality->7->tensions), and allows for consistent notation between the note name chord and roman numeral analysis
