My favourite Sherlock episode. Lara Pulver is fantastic as Irene Adler. The original story is very slim, and effectively finishes at the moment Irene escapes after drugging Sherlock. Steven really added a lot to the original. And I love it. Just don’t think too hard about the details, e.g. Bond Air. The book is a Scandal in Bohemia, involving a minor royal, who is rather irrelevant as the story is really about Irene, and Sherlock’s admiration for her. So, the identity of the young female royal is...irrelevant. Watson’s girlfriend was Oona Chaplin, aka Talisa aka Robb Stark’s wife in GoT.

Ultimately he saved her. I think, he originally was going go let her win. Not so much out of love, but respect. She played an A level game and he knew that all of her maneuvering was for one simple goal, her safety. The moment she mentioned she had been in league with Moriarty though, he knew she would be under his thumb for the rest of her life. Now, it could also be that he knew she was in league with him and wanted confirmation, so his phony loss to her may have just been a fake out so she would be overly confident and let it slip. Still, having her "die" was the only way she would ever be safe. I love the use of the sound cue there at the end. So awesome.

Ahh, Irene Addler! Whether she's an opera singer (in the stories) or be she a dominatrix, she seems to get the best of Sherlock, giving her the nickname, "The Woman."

The police officer was Danny Webb. In loads of stuff, since the early 80s. You might remember him from Alien 3 or the 1st Ood story in Doctor Who.

A returning boomerang is designed to return to the thrower. It is well-known as a weapon used by Indigenous Australians for hunting. Boomerangs have been historically used for hunting, as well as sport and entertainment.
@paulkennedy87014 жыл бұрын
The returning boomerang wasn't used for hunting, or at least not to hit prey. It was a toy, as you say. The ones used for hunting were the non-returning sort.

I also would like to know who was the Royal person they hinted was with Irene...
@adambesley44554 жыл бұрын
The most likely candidates would be Princess Beatrice the oldest daughter of Prince Andrew or Zara Tindall daughter of Princess Anne. They would be in their twenties when this episode is set and being the Queen's grand-daughters they are definitely persons of significance. Given Zara is an equestrian that might lead extra credence to Irene using a riding crop.

The only things we know about her is that she's royal and young, so it could of been quite a few people. I.E. It could of been Princess Euginie. She would of been 21 when it aired, so that's another possibility

I thought it was 2 years in between season 2 and 3. Benedict and Freeman were both filming for the Hobbit movies during all of that time, and also while Moffat was doing the 50th for Doctor Who as show runner. Things were moved around between the 2 shows.

In the original stories, Watson begins writing and publishing their adventures (much to Holmes') disgust. You may want to take a look at the version of the Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, starring the wonderful Jeremy Brett. This one is taken from the original stores and are, therefore, taking place in Victorian London.

Fun fact: when Irene says "Impress a girl", after Sherlock solves it, he looks at John, and THEN Irene. Really makes you think about who he was trying to impress subconsciously.

The one thing that bothers me about this episode is that the point of Irene Adler in the books is that she gets away with it, she stumps Sherlock and he only figures it out once she's gone and she has won and disappeared with her blackmail material. And she was able to do so because Sherlock was arrogant and assumed he would be able to easily best her and he underestimated her. I don't remember if it was said outright but I think it was mentioned he underestimated her because she was a woman. In the end she has won, and he respects her. Here, she loses and doesn't get away with it at all, she needs his help in fact.

i really didnt like what they did with irene adler here, the whole point in the books was, that she DID outsmart sherlock, and she was just trying to marry the person she loved, and in the end sherlock recognized that and "admitted defeat", so to speak. and here, to make her a lesbian and still fall in love with sherlock and have sherlock have that "ha gotcha u were too horny for me" moment kind of rubs me the wrong way, especially since this show doesnt have any kind of other lgbtq representation in the first place anyway....i do still enjoy the episode, but as a former incredibly big fan, i just cant help being critical of these kinds of aspects of the show. sorry, im rambling, regardless of my feelings about the show, great reaction!
