@@kellharris2491 FOR REAL But I feel like with the show ending they could so make in Canon (If you're watching Harley Quinn The Animated Series or plan to don't read on, because I don't want to spoil the end of season 2 for you) I Know that Harley is Bi and we knew that and with Pryor shows and stuff her and Ivy have been together before but I feel like the animated series took it further than anything else had ever taken it and I feel like even tho Supergirl in the comics is gay... at least I don't think she is, the artowverse is something different, yes its based of of the characters but we've seen them change the aspects of the stories alot so I feel like they could make Supercorp Canon in season 6 and have nothing to lose, if anything it will draw in more viewers because we got the best slow burn in the history of TV

The biggest problem I have with Sherlock is how much the show loves to torture John Watson. It seems like the show keeps trying to one-up his suffering with each season. It's like they're playing a game: how much suffering can John take before he breaks?

Exactly! Needless suffering that goes nowhere doesn’t make you look cool and mature, it just looks like the writing equivalent of drawing exaggerated gore in comics. It loses all meaning, and feels like the writers trying to look modern and hardcore and edgy. Which pulls you out of the story, not into it.

I was so pissed when the day came that I finally realized that every joke about Sherlock and John being together was just that.... a joke. I know, I stopped watching after Moffat made that big speech about how shipping "cheapens their friendship". Every time I watch this shit, I feel like they're insulting my intelligence. Maybe if they decided to write more convincing straight characters, people would stop seeing them as queer, just a thought! Even if queer baiting weren't like offensive in general, it's shitty writing that doesn't really further the plot in any way. I resent that they waste viewers' time with endless scenes of them getting mistaken for a couple when it's clearly a non-issue.

I used to think the keyboard warriors were just going mad and the queer baiting is actually not that bad. However after seen the abominable bride more specifically during the part where moriarty says to john and sherlock "Oh just elope already." really opened my eyes. It was so obvious. Chris Kingston I personally liked what they did with Richie solely because I’m a big fan of the books and it was nice to see them come out and say it. It did upset me that they had to come out later and say that Eddie reciprocated the feelings, but I did like how subtle they were. Finn Wolfhard and Jack Dylan Grazer didn’t even intentionally create that dynamic in the first movie, but I could tell they were trying a bit for the second. If they do actually end up doing a super-cut and include all the scenes they had to cut, I think it would’ve felt a lot smoother. Unfortunately, with a movie with seven main characters who all have their own plots, they couldn’t take Richie as far as they wanted

Every time that a character, usually very closed off before that encounter, is portrayed building a friendship that will always be more important than any romantic relationship people interpret it the other way. Sherlock is the worst adaptation of the character to date due to the terrible writing. Moffat lulls people into thinking his shows are clever when really they aren't at all. The original Irene Adler was a woman who outwitted Holmes and in that story Holmes was kind working for the bad guy while Irene was a woman who just wanted to marry the person she loved. In the show she's a dominatrix who is a baddie and also attracted to Holmes and ends up needing to be saved by him. Moffat basically took a character that in the books challenged Holmes' preconceptions of women and was the only one to outsmart him and turned her into an awful mess.

@@arandombard1197Wishing to see queer characters be well represented in media is not the same as fetishizing said characters. As a girl who likes m/m fanfiction myself, I learned to take my own point of view with a grain of salt, and I also learned to differentiate these two things by searching for the opinion of the ones truly affected. If the person who wrote the original comment only cared about fanfiction, they could go read it instead of expecting shows to portray queer relationships in a healthy manner. Also, many people would understand Sherlock and John's interactions as possibly romantic if one of them were a woman, so they are not immature and delusional as you are probably implying. Furthermore, Yuri on Ice is a sports' anime which is not centered around the romantic relationship between the protagonists, which is one of the reasons queer people claim it is good representation, the fact that not everything revolves around them not being heterosexual. And most importantly, if queer people are saying this is a distressing case of queerbaiting, to dismiss it as people wanting to watch gay fanfiction can be offensive.

i was aware of queerbating in this show but thanks for making a video which perfectly expresses how it feels to suffer through a script that dismisses AND mocks the queer angle WHILE STILL using extensive planting and payoff to establish an underlying romantic tone. Like. What john says to his therapist is so telling of how much the writers hhhhhaATTTEE their audience. They used one of the most emotionally charged moments in a characters timeline ( johns grieving) to set up... a joke romantic reveal... waited for the characters to part ways... introduce the payoff.... then just flip off their audience. Thats how much work they put into fooling and laughing at their fans! imagine how much cool character and plot related things they could have introduced with that same set up! maybe it goes like this : John is emotionally distressed after Sherlocks death, he tells his therapist that hes having flashbacks of the war again , that he feels guilty about "leaving a man behind". This ..sets up a brotherhood. It introduces the theme of survival guilt , which is reasonable for john watson to feel as an army medic. It takes them a season to work through it! john is overprotective which gets in the way of their work, sherlock doesn't see whats wrong with self sacrifice at first. Over time its made clear that sherlock was close to being beaten and if he had just worked with john as a team the whole thing could have been avoided. The season focuses on their work relationship , john learns to trust Sherlock to not do stupid shit , Sherlock learns to respect john as his partner and ask him for backup. When sherlock goes to leave, both of them know they can rely on one another. John tells sherlock about feeling like he had abandoned one of his men at war after his death. Sherlock tells him that he had been in the wrong by walking out of the trenches. They both say goodbye knowing they'll see each other again, opposite to the end of Reinbach falls. The loop is completed , with john leaving Sherlock behind , this time on completely different terms. my point is: you could have ... developed a platonic brotherhood WHILE furthering their character growth by using..... THE SAME TACTIC that was INSTEAD used to SPIT IN FANS FACES FOR THINKING IT WAS GUNNA BE GGGGGGGGAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYY

@@elisabethtveitalea3414 It's more about showing the label rather than outright saying it. What I mean by this is to show someone maybe being in a relationship with someone of the opposite gender, but showing or mentioning a past relationship with someone of the same gender. That's bisexual representation without forcing the label on a character, which is what I think people want more than anything. I know the person above said that they want it to be said, but it's kind of hard to show asexuality without explicitly saying "i'm not sexually attracted to anyone", just because you can go a whole show without a character having sex, but thats not explicitly stating that they're asexual.

It'sJay YourLocalGay Yeah, that I’d actually love to see. Show Sherlock being in a same sex relationship, or have it be shown in-universe that he just isn’t interested in ever having one. I agree showing that someone is definitely asexual could be difficult, and I’m not saying Sherlock can’t just say it, just that it should be written naturally into the story. Maybe have him and John talking about relationships, and maybe have John pressuring him a little bit about getting one, and then have Sherlock tell him he’s asexual and/or aromantic. I don’t know, but having it revealed through a natural conversation in an episode where it makes sense to have that conversation would be great! Reading my original comment I see that it kinda looks like I’m against LGBTQ representation. I’m absolutely not. I’d just rather it not get thrown in as an afterthought or have it be used as a way to earn brownie points for the producers. I think it’s really important to actually show LGBTQ people being LGBTQ without it being a big deal, because having Sherlock talk about being asexual or bisexual for five minutes would just seem unnatural and clumsy, and wouldn’t help in normalising LGBTQ people in media. I really appreciate your response, thank you for clearing up the actual argument being made. I was kinda confused, and thought it was about maybe the show runners declaring Sherlock as bi or ace in an interview or something. That’s really what bothered me, so thank you for clarifying :)

@@elisabethtveitalea3414 I know this comment is old, but I think the big reason people want it said explicitly is because, like she says in the video, the show itself makes a big deal out of it. All of this talk about "whatever you are" and dancing around any terms for the character's sexuality, the least they could do is have something come out of it, and maybe lay the sexuality jokes to rest. TL;DR: people want the show to bring a topic that it has been talking about since the first episode to a conclusion.

SPOILERS FOR SEASON 13 SUPERNATURAL BELOW in my answer. I don't think Supernatural is queerbating, certainly not anymore (well, certainly not yet). Up until the end of s4 it used gay references as jokes, however that was many seasons ago and hints at the romantic pairing of Dean and Cas have moved way beyond a joke, or a hint, into almost-text. Every episode since mid season 12, and certainly in s13 has continued to textually use romantic tropes, editing, dialogue, symbolism, and everything else under the sun to suggest that the subtextual reading of the Dean/Cas pairing is leading towards them canonically being together. So currently I really don't think it's possible to say that the show is queerbating because they're writing/directing/acting out that relationship as leading towards the pairing. If they end up pulling a no-homo stunt with them mainly the writing these past two seasons and potentially further back will make little sense within these characters' contexts; guys pine after each other, one says 'i love you [cut to Dean], i love all of you [cut to Sam and Mary just to hammer home the point that Cas loves Dean in a different way', Dean makes him a mixtape (classic romantic trope), Cas dies and Dean can barely function becoming literally suicidal as a stark comparison to Sam who is of course upset but not 'i just lost the love of my life' upset, and so so much more. The show has been accused of queerbating but they have reimbursed the romantic subtext, and brought on gay writers, and major plot points of this new season revolve around the feels between Dean and Cas. If they don't make it canon idk what the fuck the entire, and I mean entire production crew and cast are doing. So Supernatural can't be considered queerbating currently, because right now it's using this romantic subtext to lead towards canon. HOWEVER, if by the end of the show this isn't resolved, or it's kind of resolved but still up for interpretation then feel free to say its queerbating and call the show every name under the sun, because I will. Not just because it would be the biggest queerbating example in TV history, but because huge swathes of the show will now be useless, unnecessary, and terrible writing. And other thematic points will make zero sense if that happens. Sorry, this was such a long response, and I hope this doesn't come across as me trying to be contrary towards you personally - I'm just very passionate about that show haha (can ya tell?). Anyway, I don't think it's completely fair to call out SPN for queerbating until the show ends without it being canon. But if it doesn't become canon, I'll quit my job and take up screaming into the sky as my new profession.

elusive honestly? I don’t care. I have barely thought of the show in years and my only thought regarding it being on its last season is “Finally. It’s over.” Even if they do make dean and cas canon, it wouldn’t be worth the years of stringing people along like a carrot on a stick just to give people what they want once they no longer have to deal with the consequences. Shows like Adventure Time or Legend of Korra don’t have a choice in how they get to represent. Supernatural could’ve acted on this the whole time and it makes me sick watching fans season after season come back because they think for sure it’s going to become canon this time like some kind of abusive relationship.

You are so goddamn right... The queerbaiting in this show is really aggressive and in your face - When you have watched everything till Abominable Bride it's getting really depressing. Sherlock is either a show about (A) two queer guys stuck deep in the closet and making terrible life descissions for no apparent reason (like John marrying Mary *Beatrice Kiddo* Morstan) [everything fine with John being bi, but marrying Mary even though the love of his life had just returned from the grave is not....) Or (B) it is a sadistic, patriacharic show about a het guy that is so "unmanly" and lacks so much of a spine that everyone thinks he is the gay doormat of an excentric detective. In this case Sherlock himself were an emotionally confused asexual, using John to look not so asexual anymore. By the way, Mycroft teasing his brother as being afraid of sex doesn't help at all. The only character that is allowed to be not-straight is a cackling, manic supervillian that just shoots himslef for ... fun??? Wow... great role model... So the only non-straight left is a *lesbian* dominatrix crushing on Sherlock like a school girl ... oh I think I get a headache... What is so difficult about depicting a bi/gay detective duo with a positive releationship!?!

they also queercoded Moriarty- who the writers describe as a 'psycho' implying his queercoded behaviours are equatable with being 'mentally unhinged' aka mental illness (there is also another point to make about equating mental illness with 'evilness'). Oh yeah, and the only explicitly lgbt+ character is Irene (who they completely fucked up but anyway...) and SHE IS ALSO A VILLIAN. So done with Moffat- he should not have creative control over any series- he can write a good episode but that's it.

I've noticed that Moffat pattern of making minor characters/villains "closeted" and major villains "out" is kind of gross. He often presents "being gay" as a punchline. For instance I remember that in the first episodes of Doctor Who that he directed, there's a minor villain of a greedy father who has an unusually large amount of food during wartime and the neighbors assume it's because his wife is sleeping with the butcher, but * badum tish* it's actually him. Whaaaat. I can't recall specifics but it feels like being queer is presented in this way by him multiple times including in the Sherlock TV show (i.e. Sherlock's sister forgetting the gender of the guard she raped).

i feel like what they could've done here is just make one of them not straight. probably Sherlock since Watson is pretty obviously going out with only women all the time. i feel like it's weird that there always has to be a relationship too. why can't a gay person just exist sometimes and do things without having some relationship that doesn't need to be there shoved in? i like what they did in Stranger Things with Robin for example. Steve asks her out, she says "No, i'm into girls", he accepts it and they become friends and the plot continues. it's not a big deal and it's not the point of her character, it's just a thing that also happens.

Okay. So now I've watched 37 of the 48 TJLC videos by Rebekah and I am amazed both by the intricate details of her videos, and also by all of the imagery and subtext and mirroring etc. etc. that I never noticed thruout the series. She (and the TJLC community) make an unambiguous argument that Johnlock was indeed the endgame of the producers, and now I don't have a clue as to how I would include season 4 into that equation. I don't think that you are wrong for believing that Sherlock was gay (Altho not acting on his desires) and I now really believe that there is good reason to believe that John was EITHER bisexual or gay (with some self-hatred included regarding his sexuality). Indeed, Altho I wasn't familiar with the term until a few days ago, queerbaiting seems to be the ONLY explanation, unless Sherlock continues for at least one more season and has Sherlock and John get together without any ambiguity whatsoever. Considering the extraordinarily detailed videos I just watched, I am now horrified that Johnlock isn't a definitive couple. (And I remain further horrified at how very much I missed in my (likely) dozens of times watching each episode. I'm not sure if I'm just incredibly stupid or simply didn't realize just how different my watching television shows might be next to a gay or bisexual individual. Maybe I've spent my entire life not seeing details in various shows b'c I, apparently, have a skewed heteronormative view of life. Or something like that. And my idea that I WOULD/ DID understand shows about gay characters [bc I watched QAF, Glee, and OITNB] is simply wrong. Perhaps I missed huge amounts in those shows as well b'c of a skewed perspective (albeit Kurt was the reason I watched Glee for all six seasons, and I THOUGHT I was looking at the show correctly. ) And, actually, Brian and Justin (well Brian) was the reason I watched QAF, so I now wonder about everything I missed while watching that as well.) Perhaps Rebekah can write up videos for those shows as well, giving me an in-depth view of things I should have noticed. I should probably comment on her video site... I'm now completely indignant that Johnlock is not a couple. I think 'queerbaiting' should include the entire alphabet soup of individuals, b'c while I don't have the same rationale for wishing to see queer representation, I certainly expect shows of a certain caliber to follow thru on their promises of long term gay couples if that's how they write the show. I mean, it's 2017 now -- people expect there to be both straight and gay couples on TV, in the same way they would expect to see the whole range of different ethnicities in, say, NYS. Where I live. But, either way, I can easily see your annoyance and/or outrage. (Those videos are amazing, by the by. I remain awed by the research that was included in each one. )

Girl, same. On a lot of things. There is humourous queerbaiting in the first two seasons and serious queerbaiting in the second two. Of course someone else can see it as platonic and sibling-like. But if a villain shall ask Sherlock to choose who can live by killing the other --SPOILER-- his brother or his best friend, and his brother actually tried to manipulate Sherlock to choose Watson because Sherlock functions so much better when he’s with Watson, that’s quite heavy. There are far more orientations than straight and gay. Like aromantic or asexual. Which Sherlock was probably the latter and Watson could be seen as bi. I think showrunners of a popular show making the protagonists gay fear losing their viewership and the outcry it would cause to a heteronormative society and from “purists” who assume that every interpretation of Sherlock was straight - when there have been many versions throughout history and queerbaiting is definitely not a modern tactic. All in all, they’re adorable. They’re my boys. I love how they care about each other. I love the growth that they have because of their relationship. And agreed.

It's sad because a lot of teens do not have relevant experience about homophobia, so they misinterpret every "no homo" joke. They think the joke is queer coding when it's actually the opposite. I don't blame them, I made those jokes when I was closeted, but that's far less damaging than creating a homophobic running gag and refusing to admit it's cruel meaning. It's the same issue in the Supernatural show too, these writers are old and the context is definitely homophobic.

What's interesting is that I believe I read that the series creator Kipke actually wrote Dean as a bisexual but it was CW who said no. Keeping that in mind, he was only a writer for the first 5 seasons so one could argue that any queerbaiting of Dean in the first 5 seasons (specifically him being all toxic masculinity to insist that he's straight) could be argued it was him being in the closet with internalized homophobia. After season 5 with all the other numerous writers, it was actual queerbaiting and homophobia. I always felt that Dean was deep, deep in the closet but I NEVER perceived Castiel to be Gay... he's sorta straight or a "straight curious" celestial being... Sam is clearly straight and completely comfortable in his sexuality and masculinity in a fairly healthy way (except all the murdering....) Here's my take on the queer baiting of the show after season 5: The writers were purposefully making fun of the fans every chance they got, and the queer community/allies happen to be heavily involved in the fandom. But it's an abusive relationship the love/hate towards the fandom community. And unfortunately as wonderful as thd SPN family is... there is an undeniably dark underbelly to it that involved threats to the actors wives and pressuring the writers into storylines they don't want which probably only made them want to queerbait out of spite even more... And a lot of the queerbaiting could be blamed on the editors of the show. Let me explain: It's not the dialogue or the obvious subtext that makes up most of the "evidence".... I'd argue it's the fact that the editors always intentionally edit scenes between Dean and Castiel in a very specific way. The scene was written in a certain way, the actors acted it, the cinematographer filmed it but the editor chose to have Cass stare at Dean just a few seconds longer than a friend would... it changes the whole subtext of the scene. The thing is, sometimes actors end up staring at each other or emoting longer than the lines to fill out the shot until the director yells "cut!". Usually the scene will be cut relatively quickly after a line is said but the editors on SPN seem to always make it look like Dean or Castiel's gazes/looks are lingering but in reality the actors have to hold if until the director says cut so they can break character. The editing completely misleads us

Hi to add to this, I know this is old, but the creator (Moffat was it?) has been on record to TALK about queer representation and said there should be more... Then when asked if they were going to have Sherlock and Watson confirmed, he said no, and pretty much said he wASN'T THE PROBLEM? Sighs.
