Hm… well here’s one take on it. The only reason that he reacts when people talks about women, is because with women, the stakes are higher. With them, it’s for real. With them, he’s at risk of having to face his biggest fear; feelings. Sherlock is an man who learnt at a young age that feelings only get you hurt. Being cold hearted is his coping mechanism, which has kept him from being hurt ever since he was a kid, very efficiently even. Therefore, his braniac image is all he cares about, he thinks that’s all he has. When he solves crimes he’s in control of his feelings, and when he gets complimented on his logic skills he loves it because that’s what builds up his self worth, his ego. Just like women way too often are reliant on their looks to feel worthy. Without his brain, he’d only be an awkward nerd with no social skills and no friends (which is why he come to value John so much). So… by forcefully explaining that he’s not dating women, he is just making it damn clear to himself and others that he’s not weak. For example: When he refuses Molly, the stakes are obviously high, because she’s literally a potential emotional trap, something he doesn’t want to come close to. His defense mechanism goes bananas, and he just cold heartedly shakes her off, and manages to do so without hesitation because he’s not even into her. Also he’s sort of a dick, haha. I can even go as far as saying that the fact that Sherlock likes Molly so much as a friend, tells me that he might have fallen for her if his mental health was better. However, when John asks intimate things like that, Sherlock is at no risk of becoming emotionally attached - simply because he’s not into men! And since Sherlock knows for sure that a man would never have any emotional impact on him whatsoever, he has no reason to put up any walls. He doesn’t need his guard to protect him against feelings when it comes to men, because there are none. In the end, Sherlock can calmly tell John that he doesn’t want a relationship. And the reason he does that is not because he cares what others think of his sexuality, but because he needs to justify and keep up his cold hearted self image. To him self, and to others. The writers just tried to make the story more entertaining by including this comedic suspense. It’s meant to keep us on our tiptoes, and it works because nothing about Sherlock’s inner world is explicit. Well, apart from his mind palace, that is. And it’s a genius draw to never have Sherlock brushing the rumors off, because it keeps us wondering about this mystery man. And about Irene Adler? Well, she’s not emotional at all, and does not need his feelings for anything, so he can stay detached. And that’s very easy to him; after all that’s what he’s successfully been doing all life. He gets off on Irene because she’s safe. And that’s his trauma wound right there.

What convinced me was that John could've easily said that he was straight and ended the possibility of a romance there, but instead he chooses to say he's just not gay and leaves the idea of bisexuality open. That way it's not the "if it's you, it's okay" trope which has been done too many times as it is.

***** no, i just know how to read a narrative when i see one. Im not saying the cases dont make sense (though some of them really don't without johnlock). Im saying the acting choices, music, subtext, and dialogue dont make sense. John and sherlock are best friends and have already killed for one another so, narratively speaking, where does their relationship go? Staying best friends doesnt fit the way the story is being told. The show is centered around common romantic troupes and the acting is pushing a romantic narrative. All the people involved in the making of the show are award winning professionals. They can't be doing all this by mistake; they are the ones who wrote it, filmed it, acted in it. You can't accidentally write a story with that much subtext and accidentally have your actors carry the show like a love story.
@madefullmetalprobably8 жыл бұрын
***** i actually have read the originals and trust me, it has a lot of homoerotic subtext that had to stay subtext (cause you know, the late 1800s weren't exactly kind to the gay community). But honestly that doesn't even matter because this is a MODERN ADAPTION. In this modern adaption, sherlock and john can be anything they want. According to the show's narrative, what they want is each other. Or you could just go watch the rest of the TJLC Explained series where Rebekah explains in full detail exactly how the show doesn't make sense without johnlock, seeing as though you're already here.

It's funny, with the ships I have for the show, Johnlock was always number 3. I was never that into it, partially because I thought that it was just something everyone shipped and because I just didn't really see it. I could never avoid their bond, however, or the subtext, because of course as a fangirl and active shipper, I pick up on these things. Before watching these videos, I think the one moment that perplexed me was in The Sign of Three when Sherlock left the wedding party looking very upset. Like, that made me think that he must have had deeper feelings for John. And then in His Last Vow with Sherlock saying goodbye. I was holding my breath, hoping for an 'I love you', course we got the girl's name comment instead, but you could tell what he wanted to say. After watching a handful of these videos, it really makes me a believer in this ship. It would be crazy if it didn't become canon!
@steemdup8 жыл бұрын
I've thought this since the first episode - Sherlock seems smitten with John when they meet in the lab (I prefer the unaired pilot, btw). And yes, Sherlock finds nothing strange in inviting a complete stranger to flatshare, but most people would. But John says yes! Mrs Hudson mentions there's a second bedroom if they'll need it (John gets pissy) (she knows Sherlock is gay so she assumes they are together). Angelo assumes John and Sherlock are on a date. Some of this is canon, some of this is creative screenwriting, some of this is supportive of Sherlock being in love with John and John continuing to be in denial. Moriarty and Magnussen epitomize skincrawling villains, and Sherlock's weakness. Sherlock is not at his best when he's vulnerable. And I still want to know: why did Mary shoot Sherlock and let Magnussen go? I'm sure she didn't expect him to survive. And why did John stay with her after he found out? And yes, Holmes and Watson together forever is canon. And so is Sherlock and John. Some folks don't support or are offended by JL, but not me. It makes sense and the attraction between them is just too obvious to ignore. I hope S4 is better than S3
@wandanemer26305 жыл бұрын
He stayed with her because she was pregnant with his kid? Quite probably? And because she's a dangerous assassin who would easily kill them all if he left her? And because he doesn't know how Sherlock feels about him, also... But, mostly, I think he did it to keep Baby Rosie safe, although we all saw he wasn't able to keep the act for much longer, after Rosie was born, and pretty much jumped into the first random romantic alternative that he saw. He didn't ultimately commint to actually cheating tho, because of his high morals, and ended it himself, but that alone was enough to cause him to hate himself, only agravated by "Mary"'s "death". And then he felt so guilty and disgusted with himself that he shut Sherlock out of his life and took all of his pain on him. (Also, proyecting his own guilt, about not loving Mary in the first place, and emotionally cheating on her with Sherlock). It's all a big mess for the poor man. Brilliantly executed Evil Plan, however.

One of the things that consistently impresses me with your videos is how concise and articulate you are. I realize that comes from HOURS of script writing and editing, and then recording and editing, and probably doing retakes of challenging bits, and making sure EVERY WORD is clear. Thank you, it makes you not only watchable, but re-watchable! would-be vidders, take notes on Rebekah's techniques.

I think this video has aged better than you might think-in fact, it has aged far better than the series BBC Sherlock has or ever will, given its frankly ridiculous finale. Why did they include all of those "comedic" queer-coded interactions between Sherlock and Watson? Because, if they never intended for either character to be interpreted as queer, it just reads as cheap gay jokes-even by the standards of the 2010s. Truly, the TJLC literary interpretation of BBC Sherlock elevated it beyond its source material!

@ladyblakeney8 жыл бұрын
Well, I mean. There were characters I didn't think were necessary to the show (Molly, Sally, Anderson, Dimmock), relationships that made no sense (Sherlock and John as friends is a very weird, destructive friendship, John and Sarah never seemed very invested in each other), cases that were brilliantly plotted but that got pushed to one side in favor of random subplots (most noticeable in A Scandal In Belgravia); it all sort of meshed together to feel messy and poorly written. *shrugs* I'm no screen writer, but I do write, and it seemed a little like the second or third draft of something, where you're trying to weave all these elements from previous drafts together into something whole. The high production values further confused me (because why would you throw money at a show that seems to have no real point?) and I stopped watching after "The Reichenbach Fall" because it wasn't worth putting up with that much confusion. I feel like maybe if I had watched "The Empty Hearse" when it first came out I would have figured it out on my own? Maybe? Basically, I wasn't expecting it to actually do the thing and have John and Sherlock's romance be the through-line that holds the show together. And if you pull that out of the story, the whole thing kind of crumbles.

@Spooni37 жыл бұрын
Outright, in-your-face umambiguous confirmation in explicit text, not just subtext and inferences because they alone aren't enough with regards to being undisputed and also providing legitimized representation. And, especially, when taking into account that the repeated Word of God from the writers say 'No' to the question of Johnlock themselves. (And to which, TJLC believed them to be lying about that, until TFP, which unfortunately shattered and legit traumatized Rebekah and other TJLCers). Even the cornerstone belief that the writers deliberately aiming for the Johnlock endgame was completely shattered when the writers revealed that they were telling the truth that 'Sherlock and John would never get together in the show' and that they never meant the gay romance, only just 'flirting' with the homoerotic subtext and queer jokes out of tangent reference to 'The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes'.

I think that they were at least willing to play around with the idea, even if only in a joking manner-right up until the point where fans started to engage with the subtext seriously. Honestly, I just think they grew resentful of their large, vocal queer audience, so they decided to throw in the towel for season 4 and phone-in some random, tonally dissonant bullshit so they could get it over with and take home their paychecks 😂

But there's one moment in the show that never fails to calm my doubts and strengthen my faith in TPTB:They made John and Sherlock reunite in a Restaurant called "The Landmark"!Whenever I see that sign in TEH it feels like the producers are sending me this personal message, asking me to be patient and faithful... because landmark representation has to be done right and with such delicacy, too. And that's what they're doing. And that's why I'll stick around and not abandon this show. That's why I won't stop believing, despite that tiny flame of doubt.

why did they always bring up romance and lgbt in the interviews and then proceed to produce the shitshow season 4 was? was it really just a cheap gay joke after all?

Don't they at some point in the series say that smart is the new sexy? Unless I'm mistaken, they do, and if that happens to be the case, then when Sherlock says that John is "smarter than he looks" and agrees when John (in Sherlock's mind, so it's really Sherlock) says "pretty damn smart then" he's basically saying that he thinks John is pretty damn sexy.

Aww, I feel a bit bad writing this but I am excited to hear about your HLV pain? Having seen all of your videos up to now, I anticipate that you mean the kind of pain when you're empathizing with Sherlock and John's painful moments. When I started reading M Theory, I skipped down to HLV first (analysis of the relevant blog posts first, then the episode) because I had an idea of what it means to me and it made my heart swell reading it, made me love it even more. I think that because the romance is mounting from the beginning, HLV reveals a lot of their love for each other and seeing how far Sherlock is willing to go for John (he'd do anything) and that's why I like it so much. M Theory also gave me a lot more to think about in terms of sussing out what Mary's motivations most likely are, in addition to Janine's and Moriarty's. When I started to understand the things going through their minds, it seemed like the only thing left is the main story: that John and Sherlock are deeply in love with each other and circumstances keep driving them apart. As I've been watching your videos over the past few weeks and rewatching the episodes for the upteenth time, I've realized that I can't actually think of another story with this level of romantic tension. I'd fall back on X-Files but it felt like "I just know it's going to work out for these two" in the early years of that show (heteronormativity why you so omnipresent??). I didn't even think "John" the first time I watched the interview with Gatiss and he said the phrase "grumpy bisexual" but OMG YOU ARE RIGHT. It helps me a lot to have others act as the guide in terms of showing the way the writers change their tune in the interviews. When they pull the rug out from under the audience at large in the show, they could also still clearly say "regarding the misleading interviews: you should have seen it!" because they are telling us that they're intentionally misdirecting for the sake of the show. Because they love the show, and they take it even more seriously than we do (probably. maybe. possibly they take it exactly as seriously, hehehe). I've been a lot happier in my day to day since I stopped being deeply disappointed feeling sure that it was mindless queer-baiting. I have acute depression and any meaningful happiness in my life is a big help. I've even been tapering off alcohol (have to go slow because I have moderate withdrawal and we can't afford the inpatient detox copayment--and no, my doctor is not happy about it, but we already did bankrupcty earlier this year to clear massive medical debt for a surgery our son had and it will be bad for us to go into debt again if it can be at all avoided). I'm not saying my happiness hinges on BBC Sherlock (at all)--a lot of it comes from the support and validation I get from fellow trans and queer people every day in the support groups I engage with. But this helps too. It's really nice. :)

I mean... if a woman and a man were acting like THAT with each other on a tv show it would be nearly impossible for them to be seen as friends, you take only one of this situations and change the sex of one of the protagonists and you have a big fandom no question asked even though just one scene isn't quite enough to prove they're lovers. And there is A LOT MORE than just one scene !!!!!! It's sad that we have to prove their love when it's so obvious but I'd have to admit, before I imagined one of them being a woman I kind of wasn't a 100% sure there was something there. I thought I was maybe imagining it because I wanted it so much and I hate myself for it cause the signs are REALLY obvious ! The sex/gender shouldn't have affected how I felt about it but despite everything we are still in a society where it's easier to be accepted as a straight man/woman (hince the molly/sherlock ship when you know, no matter how you feel about Johnlock and wether John is bi or straight, Sherlock is gay !)

I feel like when they finally get together there's gonna b loads of footage that they show of previous scenes but with added bits, like the grave speech will be shown with "I love you" at the end as well as a bit that's always been there but we didn't know about it!! Can't wait for the three garridebs ep

Sherlock might me bad with humans and interpreting their emotions..but he is also one of the smartest and most observant people ever So let me ask you: if the most observant man alive thinks that you're flirting with him..don't you think you might me flirting with him? Another thing is that Sherlock is obsessed with being right and he corrects everyone and everything (even the TV), yet he never attempted to correct anyone about him and John dating.

Because Sherlock doesn’t have any friends or anyone that sticks around for too long or anyone that understands him. This has never bothered Sherlock until he met someone like John who he thinks of as a friend. Every time John has a date or girlfriend Sherlock feels like he’s being replaced and that John won’t have anymore time to spend with. Sherlock was confused and lost because he’s never had a friend so he didn’t know how to react.

Ich sehe zwei Menschen die sich schätzen, über alles. Ich sehe zwei Menschen die das schlimmste und das beste voneinander wissen. So, I dont have a tumblr account or anything, so I'll just say what i think here. Season 4 so far seems to be markeded like an action movie, full of thrilling dark scenes. (I do think its gonna have a lot of action, but i also think its going to be very, very emotional.) So I think they want to keep the casuals close, epecially those who dont want too much emotion. Mofftiss is doing it right, softly, gently, so none of the casuals notice before its "Too late" (And everything explodes into rainbows and kisses and unicorns.) :)

i seriously think their hiding the romance by using that mega-dark super-action, lady-lovin' trailer.

I will say, though, that as someone who relates a lot to sherlock and really understands him, some of these moments aren't exactly queerbaiting. fx: sherlock was being "petty" towards/around john's girlfriend because that's his personality. he is usually very petty and always corrects people when they make mistakes. another example: when sherlock crashed john and sarah's date it didn't have anything to do with sherlock being jealous or anything. he merely found an opportunity (john's date) that would help him with his case and used it for his own good. i ship johnlock (or i think that sherlock is at least romantically interested in john) but i think it's important to take context and the nature of sherlock and john's character into consideration before you call any scene/moment gay/homoerotic. and i'm not trying to nitpick i just think it's important. sherlock also describes john's wedding as going into battle because there's going to be lots of people that he doesn't know very well and he has to make a speech about john in front of those people. this was a running theme in the episode, people being afraid that sherlock would panic because he had to make a speech in front of lots people.

Concerning John's session with his grief counselor, there's probably a lot of anger directed at Sherlock for dying, (it happens), which could be (another) reason why he has difficulty expressing those feelings of abandonment when Sherlock isn't there for two years... (I have had a lot of anger towards a friend of mine who passed away - why didn't she take better care of herself... etc...) So - that could be one of the (other) reasons besides "unspoken love" not being "allowed" to be expressed, even after death...
