So in summary, Moriarty lost because of three basic reason: 1. He underestimated Holmes - his judgement severely affected by the complacency that had set in after dealing with average people 99% of the time. 2. His aforementioned complacency also brought about over-confidence - pride blinded him from second-guessing his calculations regarding the degree of time and resources Holmes had invested in his crusade. 3. Instead of using a Mind-Palace, he used a notepad to keep tracks of his shadow business enterprises. While his practice of maintaining his ledger in public may have fooled ordinary law enforcement - he also forgot he was dealing with Holmes.

This occured to me as well, although a possible explanation, not too stretched I would say, followed. Moriarty was said to use the notebook to record the changes in his vast property and there might not have been any input for him to record (or any he found worth recording). Of course, if he was sufficiently careful (and/or paranoid), he would have checked the notebook soon after the Heilbronn incident, he was, however, very arrogant, therefore it might have not ocurred to him as a possibility that Holmes would not only take note of his notebook and realize its significance, but also sucessfully steal it from him.

Wait, he slipped him the book like right after Moriarty told the story about the fisherman...Sherlock knew he'd tell that story
@JonPITBZN Жыл бұрын
The story is from a song called Die Forelle. Moriarty is playing that song on a record player when Holmes comes to get his book autographed by Moriarty. Holmes mentions it. So if Moriarty hadn't told that story, then the flipbook would have been a callback to their conversation in London.

I love it when he says, "Irony abounds". Brutal.

Love that a man as brilliant as Moriarty, who (as the film shows) is capable of exactly the same level of deductive and inductive reasoning as Holmes, IMMEDIATELY knows how The Art of Domestic Horticulture has completely sunk him. Though, of course, I myself own many books I’ve never read.

After watching the couple of movies I started observing people more... I would just sit in a corner and try to extract all the traits I possibly could of a person... Like his/her age, whether they are married or single, right or left handed,the vehicle they own, the job they do... And so on...it just makes me feel more... Intellectual...and somewhat like a detective...

I'd love to see a 3rd one with Charles Augustus Milverton. Anthony Hopkins would play him to a T.

Damn, I was comparing a story with rivals in a Holmes and Moriarty way, then I had to rewatch some scenes. And now thanks to this scene and many more I want to rewatch these two movies

When you learn chess notation and think you'll now be able to understand this scene, but then they use descriptive notation instead of algebraic.

What if Holmes ended up losing the game? "Look, I was going to make this awesome visual metaphor where the moves on the board mirrored the moves in real life but I'm just not that good at chess, okay?"

He straight up sun tzu'd him When you are strong make it look like you are weak (When he was being tortured he was returning the book) Know your enemy like you know yourself (He noticed how out of place the dying plant was and worked out if he was using the Horticulture book just as guide his nature would compel him to attend to the window box)
