Holmes is visited by Mr. Chalmers (Gavin Muir), an insurance agent with a strange tale. Seven single men, calling themselves "The Good Comrades", live together in the remote Scottish castle of Drearcliffe House, near the village of Inverneill. Recently one of the "Good Comrades" received a strange message, an envelope containing nothing but seven orange pips. That night, he was murdered and his body horribly mutilated. A few days later, a second envelope was delivered, this time containing six pips, and the recipient also died mysteriously soon afterwards, his battered corpse being recovered from the base of the cliffs. Chalmers holds £100,000 of life insurance policies on the seven men, and suspects that one is systematically murdering the others in order to collect the money, and begs Holmes to investigate.
Holmes and Watson arrive at the scene only to find another murder has occurred. His body is burned to a crisp. Lestrade also arrives to investigate. Despite Holmes' best efforts, three more deaths occur, each time leaving the victim's body unrecognisable.
Lestrade jumps to the obvious conclusion, that the last surviving member, Bruce Alistair (Aubrey Mather), murdered all the others. However, after Watson goes missing, Holmes has deduced the truth and leads Lestrade (and Alistair) to a secret room where all the "Good Comrades" - alive and well - are hiding with Watson tied up. Holmes explains that Alistair was the victim of a plot to frame him for murder and collect the insurance money by the other six.

Living in a squat in 1981, the reason why me and my brother got a TV (IB&W, 2nd hand) was a tea time BBC2 series of all the Rathbone and Bruce films. Eating our tea, while the sky darkened, the autumn wind rustling the trees just outside our window, and watching these film, is still what London means to me.

Same here, I loved all the BBC2 old films they used to show about 6pm after children's hour had ended. It always seemed to be autumn or winter outside.Afterwards I usually rushed off and built a 'set' of the film using lego and recreated scenes from it.

One of the absolute joys in this world is watching the superb, exquisite pacing and timing of Rathbone's delivery of his dialogue as Sherlock Holmes and Nigel Bruce's equally excellent timing and delivery of his responses to Holmes' statements and questions! The on-screen chemistry between Rathbone and Bruce as Holmes and Watson respectively, has never been equalled in the history of film or TV productions of the Sir Arthur Conan Doyle stories! Approached yes, equalled--definitely not! The scene in "House of Fear" in which Holmes and Watson discuss Captain Simpson's demeanor when he saw the needle on the chair in the morning compared to his demeanor in the evening at dinner when he thought erroneously that his drink was poisoned with prussic acid is a classic Holmes/Watson scene in the Universal Studios' Sherlock Holmes films!

A masterpiece of intrigue like this era of Holmes and Watson shows just how powerful these original stories would have been to the British people when written. Until Jeremy Brett nobody else comes close to the real Sherlock Holmes and none of these modern ones can hold a candle to Basil Rathbone's masterly portrayal of England's greatest investigating detective! Thanks for posting this, no matter how many times I have watched them over the last nearly 70 years they still delight me.

He actually looks like how one would picture Holmes to look. I always wish they would have made more full length features but the truth is Rathbone hated playing the character. One of Rathbone's ancestral relations, Major John Rathbone of the Union Army accompanied President Lincoln to Ford's Theater the night of.his assassination. He went in the place of.General Grant whom Lincoln had invited but had other obligations. Major Rathbone suffered a knife wound to his arm as he attempted to apprehend Booth before he jumped from Lincoln's box to the stage.

eddie lee - no one else comes close to this iconic pairing. Some people think they are not playing the characters as written by Doyle, but when have films ever done that? If they were exactly the same as the books there would be no point in watching them. Rathbone's Holmes will always be the version that others will be judged by, and so far there are no competitors.

All these great old music scores were the further development of the opera of Europe. One of the last "classical" composers was Eric Korngold who went to Hollywood and established in the 40s the symphonic sounds of those early movies.. So many others followed up,.. Rozsa, Steiner, Newman upto John Williams, who was the most productive and most popular and most copied composer of the past 40 years..Also never forgetting the great Ennio Morricone. (over 250 Films)... Today Hans Zimmer has the say in Hollywood.... All this background music, that we take so for granted, sets the mood and charm for these movies.. Its such a pity that the remaining classical composers in Europe from the last century followed the "12 - tone" music.. This was interesting but in itself a dead end.. In all the concerts I've heard in Europe over the past 45 years, no one particularly likes to be tortured by this sort of dissonant music.. Thats another reason we love these old classy movies..

I enjoyed the Sherlock Holmes movies (and the books) when I was a kid. Watching them again at age 60 is like seeing a dear old friend. The clarity of the film and the use of the lighting is just stellar. The supporting cast is so good you don't even notice that they use a lot of the same actors as secondary characters and villians in numerous tales. The stage props are usually quite good but are not always excellent but for the time they were good enough to tell the tale. It's amazing how great a story they told on a modest budget. There is nothing in Hollywood today that even approaches this quality of work.

@@SOS-School_Of_Survival Yes, alas. He, and Lestrade, served as very unsubtle foils. I get the impression the audience the studio was looking for were adolescent boys who they thought would appreciate this and not a more subtle characterization. Like the bumbling sidekick in the westerns. Watson was made to be so stupid that the audience would feel good about being smarter than he was. But at this point we have no choice but to appreciate Watson as at least a quite likable bubbleheaded companion. At least the relationship btw the two works out great. And that counts for something.

The best Sherlock Holmes and especially Dr Watson , I love Nigel Bruce , he's like your favorite uncle , these films have atmosphere by the bucket loads , the sets are fabulous and so the old school actors , brilliant.

These films with Basil Rathbone are the best thing on youtube. I just wish they had made more of them. Such a good escape from all the woes this world is going through!!!

My problem with the Rathbone Sherlock Holmes movies was how stupid they made Watson.

My VERY favorite of Rathbone and Bruce Sherlock Holmes' movies. Enjoyed the plot and the supporting actors. I never tire of it so I watch it often.

These have nothing to do with Sherlock Holmes. They are corny period pieces. Rathbone was silly, fun but Jeremy Brett was, and is the definitive Holmes.

Aaaah, that was wonderful. I love stormy weather with rain and thunder and lightning, especially at night and this film had plenty of it. Ive realized that all of Holmes movies are film noir. What a great plot this one had.

I cant quite figure out way as these films are waaaay before my time, but I am incredibly fond of them and have been watching them all. They are not just entertaining stories, the sets and old school lamp lighting is also fascinating to me.
