Sure, the giggling is charming in the end (I do love the light-heartedness) but we didn't get too much Doctor/Soldier/Friend division in the series and instead we got the smallest of glimpses and a mess. Martin Freeman would've made it amazing-- we could see it here and it's SUCH a missed opportunity.

Funny, I just watched this the other day for the first time... Its like watching teenage Sherlock even though Ben was still over 30... then again I'm over 30 and people card me all the time for looking under 21 soo... we just look young. But this was only a year before the actual Study in Pink, and he looks literally 10 years younger. Martin looks the same mostly as he does in the actual SiP. Amazing what camera angles and lighting can do... I'm glad they switched him (mostly) to suit trousers tho. The jeans would have been a bit... too much... on the more mature version of a whole year later. Though I think he was wearing jeans in the Blind Banker at one point, wasn't he? I need to rewatch it TBH, maybe the internet skewed my memory of it.

In the books, well, Sherlock actually has a lot of traits we'd now associate with being bipolar. He goes from lethargic with depressive tendencies to hypomanic in one story within the space of a few days and his usage of both cocaine and morphine are both of concern to Watson in the books. I would actually argue that the pilot that was finally aired reminds me more of Sherlock Holmes of the books. At least imho. Especially when you see moments of warmth unfold in later seasons. (He had moments of greater tenderness in the books too but they were not always on display. He was generally fixated on his work in the stories and would even put himself in danger to solve cases).

noticed something as a costumer: at around 6:13 Sherlock's collar has a red thread going through it at wide intervals. that's a running stitch, obviously done by hand. idk how other seamstresses work, but I usually make a running stitch during the first part of assemblage to get a basic idea of how something will work. it's loose, so it can easily be removed later. and since it's red, its probably an alteration that the seamstress was unsure about and wanted to be able to spot it among any other stitches. it's just something I noticed. The show was obviously still finding the "look" and that includes the costumes as well!!! I'd even hazard that the jeans are Benedict's own pair

Not sure if youre referring to this directly or indirectly with your comment, but you are correct - they added red thread to the off-the-rack coat , specifically the button hole - {to give it a "pop" } . They mention this in the DVD commentaries. 👍🏻
