My Dad when he was alive was really good at claw machines, he’d always win a prize and give it to a kid at whatever restaurant he’d go to and his car was always full of stuffed toys he’d win and every Christmas he’d give a big bag of them to the Armory that handed out toys to kids who’s parents couldn’t afford them. He was a good man.

I'll let you in on a secret about those cranes. My grandparents owned a caravan just up the coast from Yarmouth at Trimingham. Attached to the pub was a small arcade, with the crane machines. Like with many vending machines, the companies who own the cranes rent the floor space from the owner. Every spring or summer, we'd stay for a week, naturally hanging out in the arcade. My sister blitzed the cranes, getting a cuddle toy on almost every occasion, much to her little sister's (me!) & her delight! As I got older, I had the same knack as my sister. Our caravan was overflowing with stuffed toys so we started taking them back home to nearby Norwich & shared them with cousins & friends. When the companies who owned the machines came to refill them (repeatedly), they started to get just a tiny bit p****d off with us (they didn't know it was us cleaning them out, just that someone was!), since we were actually costing them more money than they were making from us, since they had to keep restocking faster than anticipated! Tickled no end by this, the landlord of the pub & the park site owners informed my grandparents, since they were close friends. The next time the company came to refill the machine, they made sure that in the future, there would be no way we could clean them out. Watching on, amused no end, the landlord & my grandparents watched as an engineer changed the cranes to much smaller ones to make it more difficult to actually grab a toy, or loosened the grip of the claws, so that when they did clamp onto something, they simply couldn't hold onto it for very long before it slipped out again. As an extra sneaky tactic, they removed the shock absorbers from the top part of the mechanism, so that when the crane lifted back up with its prize, it hit the top with a visible thud instead of a gentle tap, meaning it shook & was likely to drop the toy. The company rep was apparently giddy with glee at spoiling our fun. After that, we were never able to get a toy out, except for occasionally. It never stopped being a story that the pub landlord told punters though. It never stopped being funny to him that 2 little girls posed such a threat to them for simply using their machines as intended, and the petty retaliation by them! We later heard, whether true or not, that the company did the same to all of its machines. Including Yarmouth. I'm not claiming that it's me & sister at fault for making it so difficult to win on the cranes now, as it's the same all over the nation, but it definitely makes us wonder if we played a part on a local level! 🧸

@@synnesilentweb It is. When you hear people say it's a fix or a con, it isn't just them venting their frustration because they failed to get anything out. It's because it really IS a fix. The best way to tell how extreme it is is to just observe others misfortune. In Jamie's case, it looks like most of the claws were loosened. The best method to get anything out is to try & get the toy to 'bounce' towards the shoot. That way, when the crane inevitable drops the toy, it stands a better chance of hitting the side of the shoot, potential bouncing into it. There's more chance of getting a toy that way then actually aiming directly for the shoot. Especially if there are already other toys laying near the shoot as they can bounce a dropped toy even higher, making it even more likely to clear the side of the shoot.

I’m sorry daddy wouldn’t let go on the fire truck ride..I would have let you! I won one time with those grabber things…it was piled to the top with stuffies and it was a very light beanie baby frog. It was loosely sitting there so it was easy to get. Usually those things are very rigged as you saw..they were too heavy to win one. That was so adorable when he gave that little girl a kiss! She was just his size! Well daddy tried his hardest Sherpa, it would cost a lot less just to buy one. Love you beautiful boy! 💙💙🐾🐕🐾
