I think my ideal apartment would be a 2LDK in Asakusa north of Senso-ji or across the Sumida River. No more than a 15 min walk to station. Other areas I'd consider would be Nakameguro, Yoyogi or Kichijoji if I had more money to spend.

Considering early retirement and living in Japan - Kyoto and/or Tokyo. I've dipped my toes into the waters and looked online at several of the real estate websites. I'm thinking a 2LDK minimum and my pros and cons list is a mile long. It starts with the challenge of a place that has a lot of natural daylight, up to earthquake code, and a few other requirements like a separate bath (not a unit) and toilet, decent kitchen, good soundproofing, straightforward layout (no weird corners or angles). Your new place is an example of a good layout, though I don't envy you having had to deal with the black mold from the dryer in the bath situation. Have a great week, Sherry 👋😊

Even when they have 2-4 months rent extra, at absolutely no cost they make it impossible for people to rent in case they leave unannounced. It's usually the other way in my country, you get people in the flat but no money and can't make them leave.

Just casually able to go to the Tokyo Lens studio and work while you wait for your apartment to be ready, that's quite the flex. It was cool to get to see the process leading up to you finally getting the place.

Reikin sounds like a moving fee and Shikikin sounds like a deposit. American moving fees aren't typically more than one month's rent; that's bonkers.
@lunawense6288
@lunawense6288 21 күн бұрын
Just roll it into the rent average over the course of the renewal period. American rent is still wildly more expensive in the major cities even accounting for wage differences.

wow I pay only 50,000 yen in my apartment in Osaka around 75 sq m2 3LDK, 10 mins from the station. Tokyo is pretty expensive. Although I was paying around 56,000 for my old apartment in Tokyo 3LDK 96 sq m2 in Takadanobaba 8min from the station.

The more competitive the area is (like Tokyo), the more expensive reikin gets. Extra money for the owner right? I've never seen reikin being listed in any apartments ads in my home town though lol

This concept probably pervades East Asian property purchase/rental more than we think. Where I live, in the context of property purchasing, it's called Cash Over Valuation.
