Very interesting. I have seen some serious effects from the isocyanate hardeners.I use a fresh air supply system when using them. Thanks for your input.

Just want to throw some info out there since I’ve used Gallery Series and Emerald Urethane extensively. Gallery Series has much better coverage than Emerald. Despite the advertising about brushing Gallery it brushes on extremely well and levels out better than Emerald IMO. Gallery is much thicker than Emerald and provides better hang on verticals than Emerald does. Emerald dries rubbery and soft in comparison to Gallery which is great over trim and flexible caulking while Gallery doesn’t go over caulking very well unless the caulking has thoroughly dried and cured or if it’s a harder less flexible caulk or you put a heavier coat of Gallery over the caulk as it cracks easily. Gallery dries very hard and relatively quickly in comparison to Emerald. Products painted with Gallery are stackable within 2hrs while you have to wait over a WEEK to stack anything painted with Emerald and even then the pieces may stick together. Gallery comes in clear which is a huge plus for me. I don’t put much weight as to what products are approved by the KCMA as they believe it’s acceptable to use laminated chipboard for shelves, cabinet boxes and drawer boxes which when exposed to a few small droplets of water will cause swelling, bubbling and delamination. They also approve MDF for cabinet doors which I strongly disagree with. Chipboard and MDF contain bonding resins of organic solvents such as formaldehyde which outgas toxins for up to a decade which is horrible for homeowners. Particle wood lasts 1/10th the life of solid wood or plywood will last as well. Water based primers are not moisture resistant which over time will penetrate through the topcoat and into the particle board causing it to fail. I recommend solvent based vinyl sealer for priming. Dries extremely fast and has less VOC and HAPS than products like Zinsser BIN

Use it with some caulk, I do a lot of painted trim houses, new construction. Recently painted some windows black with gallery and used urethane caulk, I know now that was to much flex cause gallery is exceptionally hard, so what caulk would you use.

Great review. Any thoughts about spraying with hvlp. Paint seams to be to thick for hvlp. I have tried reducing 15 to 20% with water and results look good but I am not sure about long term durability thinning paint this much.

Thank you! I personally don’t use a HVLP sprayer but from what i’ve gotten from my sherwin williams store is that you shouldn’t thin the paint but i would contact a store near you to get specifics incase thats incorrect

8:16 If 320 came out better than 150, do you think there'd be any improvement if you used >400 grit? Or is there some reason not to do that? Thanks for the excellent test and review
@DullenWoodworking
@DullenWoodworking 11 ай бұрын
Honestly I don’t think it would improve anything. I think 320 is a good middle ground between smoothing the surface and roughing it up a little bit to give the paint something to bond to

Impressive presentation and analysis. Can you suggest a primer and top-coat paint for brushing cabinets? I’ve tried Emerald Urethane and Advance, but I haven’t settled on a favorite. Thanks!

Brushing and rolling will never come out as good as spraying. The best I’ve been able to achieve when I absolutely have to is using either the extreme bond primer (when I’m going over another finish) or the premium wall and wood when it’s bare wood, making sure to sand the primer, and then 2 coats of the emerald with urethane sanding in between using as small of a roller nap as you can find. I would suggest even buying a cheap sprayer and spraying whenever you can

About to spray my cabinets with gallery. Plan to degrease and sand to prep surface. Do you think 3 coats of white gallery over a medium-dark cabinet color will work? Bleed through? Do I need primer? Great video, thanks!
@DullenWoodworking

As long as it’s degreased it should work great! The Gallery actually works like a primer so 3 coats should be good!

I have a question about the sequencing you guys did- just so I have it correct: We have oak boxes + doors and we are curious if the sequencing should be: Sand 320g, 1x Primer, and 3x Paint? Also you recommend along with the manufacturer guidelines to spray the wood but is it at all out of bounds to paint with a high quality sponge roller? Thank you!
@DullenWoodworking
@DullenWoodworking 8 ай бұрын
Oak is going to be difficult because the grain but if this is a refinish and there’s a lacquer in them I would recommend sanding them a bit with 150 grit, apply sherwin williams extreme bond primer, sand the primer really good with 320 grid till it’s very smooth, then spray 2 coats of gallery. The issue with brushing and rolling is the speed in which gallery dries. It’s only recommended you spray it but you could try rolling it. I’d the boxes are raw wood. I would do the same order except use sherwin Williams premium wall and wood primer instead

The company SW bought this product from made a crosslinker (catalyst/hardener) for it to make it a true 2k product. I did read some SW dealers were selling the crosslinker. My local shop is just starting out with gallery and not aware of the crosslinker.

@@esausevenIt doesn't make it a true 2k product and you're better off using a better and cheaper 1k/2k product with an isocyanate based hardener. The Sayerlack crosslinker contains aziridine, and it's arguably worse for you than iso based catalysts. The durability and chemical resistance is not on the same level. If you're looking for an actually durable 1K look into Centurion 400 series. Gallery has poor chemical resistance and durability.

@rogeroaks2865 they do not recommend brushing and rolling the gallery series. If you have to brush and roll I would recommend using the emerald with urethane. And then if you’re spraying the doors I would use gallery

As someone who is new to painting cabinets, what spray tips/set-up would you recommend? I have purchased a HVLP sprayer. I was thinking about picking up the new little quick shot sprayer, as well. Do you have a strong recommendation to either? I'm thinking of trying out the new gallery paint. I saw it at the pro show this year.
@DullenWoodworking
@DullenWoodworking 9 ай бұрын
I would highly recommend the quickshot. I don’t have a lot of experience spraying paint with an HVLP but tip size for the quickshot I would recommend a 210 for doors and wider stuff. I also spray on setting 5 with the spraying gallery. If you’re spraying super narrow stuff I would recommend a 110 tip which just narrows your spray area, still the same amount of paint coming out just less overspray and waste

I since gallery came out I always recommend that over emerald (if it’s being sprayed). So I would recommend gallery but just be aware the gallery is extremely thin and will run on vertical surfaces so don’t spray it heavy and I would recommend having a few fans set up to turn on after it’s sprayed so it will dry it quick before it has a chance to run.

Yeah idk, I've been painting for almost 15 years.. Been using the UTE for my cabinet jobs for the past 4 years, it's great because if you still miss some edges after 2 coats, you can just brush it in right before you hang... We get alot of people who want their oak cabinets painted and what I will do it spray the first coat of finish then backbrush the finish into the grain(mostly deep base colors) I would be hesitant to do that with the gallery series if it drys so fast... I also put cup hooks in the doors and shoot them up so I can shoot both sides in a day or even shoot pigmented shellac and finish in the same day.. I know alot of other guys and company's will shoot one side then flip them the next day. They always say shoot the backside first which leads me to believe because I know they're leaving marks from the door being laid down before the finish has even cured. That's bananas to me... I always do 2 coats of shellac because I want the high build. AND I've never waited 4 hours to recoat with UTE.. I've put another coat on when they're half way setting up 😅 never had any curing problems/funky finish... Again mostly with deep base colors because with the white pigmented shellac, you cant load them up too much because of the oils, theyll want to run on you more than white bases i just Just do it such a way where your not going to have high lows... I've been painting for a living for 15 years...Thanks for the detailed review video, I want try it out forsure.. Probably do 15 cabby jobs a year... Maybe oak isn't good with the gallery series, probably shaker doors only

Yeah this might not be the best product for oak, I personally don’t do alot of refinishing projects. Most of the time is a new kitchen i’m building and then spraying or a kitchen that we paint in place and make new doors for which we spray in our shop. I was very surprised at how fast the gallery set up. You can potentially spray 2 coats on the front and back all in 1 day (without doing the hanging method) With the gallery you can touch up some little areas, i wouldn’t recommend brushing alot of area but it can be touched up.

I haven’t used Benjamin Moore in 7-8ish years so I’m not sure. I used Sherwin Williams emerald with urethane for many years before recently switching to the gallery series and love it. For the colors, if you have the paint color name and paint code, Sherwin Williams can match the color pretty close if not 100%. I’m actually about to spray a BM color next week
