This is a re-upload of a video from last year. It had received a lot of restrictions so I went back and re-edited some parts to hopefully fit KZbin's guidelines this time around! So if there are some parts that look a little janky, that's because I only had the final exported file to work with. Hope you enjoy revisiting this one! Truth is, I actually look back very fondly on this movie now. Who'da thought.

Yeah, it adds about... 30 extra minutes I think? The highlight is definitely that it shows an additional Hårga ritual which gives context for how they killed Connie; they pretend to tie up a child in a weighted net to throw into a lake, and (to Dani and the other outsiders) they look dangerously close to actually doing it before laughingly putting the child down and revealing it as play acting (except obviously they do it to Connie for real later, offscreen). It happens the night before the ättestupa, and within that context it gives an interesting sense of unreality to that sequence--like the outsiders have a sense that the Hårga are doing another elaborate fake-out until skulls start getting shattered. It also shows Dani begging Christian to leave after the ättestupa and him more or less calling her culturally insensitive for being so upset and insisting on staying. It also extends some scenes of Dani and Christian fighting before they leave for the trip, as well as scenes of the dudes generally being douchebags to Dani and each other. I can see why the scenes were cut as they do make the pacing a little uneven, but for the additional context and another beautifully-shot creepy Hårga ritual it's extremely worth seeking out for a watch.

One of horrors most effective tools, is to unsettle the viewer. To place you somewhere, mentally or physically, where you don't want to be. I'd say Ari Aster accomplished this with all three feature films on his CV. It's quite tremendous that he accomplishes this, in a film shot almost exclusively in bright daylight.

@MrMetallidude
@MrMetallidude Жыл бұрын
I know the key behind the reason why this is so disturbing. I'm a former film student in Sweden (so I understand the swedish in the movie) and my teachers taught us about what makes the most effective scares. Breaking expectations is the best way to truly affect someone. Most of the scary things in this film happens during broad daylight, in the most beautiful nature settings. Horror usually occurs during the night or in dark settings (basements, etc.), due to the lack of sight of what lurks in the shadows. So we instinctively lower our guard when we feel secure. Light provides security. So they shattered that completely here. Which is partially why I love it so. This is film class 101.
@CherubEros
@CherubEros Жыл бұрын
“Breaking expectations”, but they didn’t break expectation. You pretty much expect that their traditions are out there. What’s horrifying is how accepted it is, in the light. When it happens in the dark, it’s secret, it’s deceptive. When it happens in the light tho, it’s revered and holy. It’s juxtaposition. To have complete opposites with each other. Scary music with a romantic scene. Happy family with murder.
@MrMetallidude

Hårga is actually a real place. It’s like an hour away from where I live and I’ve drove by there several times. I always giggle a bit when I drive by the sign saying Hårga. Although the movie is filmed in Hungary and not in Sweden, but Hårga is a real place and that dance thing with the devil is a real legend there. Also the cliff jumping (ättestupa) is a real thing, not anymore though but back in the day it was actually a thing. Also we do dance around the pole when we celebrate midsommar! Another thing, one of the leaders of the cult is a Swedish actor and he’s also in a Swedish comedy where he plays a silly neighbor at a camping. Florence Pugh’s acting is absolutely amazing in this movie. Big props to her!

My friend’s dad brought us to see the director’s cut of this in theaters. It was quite the experience, but I question how watching this might have changed 16 y/o me’s brain chemistry lmao

It's crazy how all the gore in this movie shows up after you look away and look back. Every reactor closes their eyes when the people jump, but open them again when they show the gore....

The fun thing about this movie is that it's based off of a true Swedish commune. (But don't worry, they don't go around killing people.)

I’ve never seen this movie so thank you for watching it for me! Seeing your reactions, and the blurred out screens, was plenty for me (I hope!). I did subscribe because, though I didn’t recommend it, I still owe you. ❤

I've seen many horror/thriller movies, only a handful truly get me unnerved. This is one, every minute made me not completely comfortable, like theres always something just off about it. Fantastic movie.

I already watched this film in 2019. Later, in 2022, my classmates choose Midsommar to watch in a class based on storytelling. They didn't know anything about it, they just went for it and I didn't say nothing, just kept my mouth shut and watched them suffer 😂 By the second half of the film almost everybody went out of the classroom. At the end they were like: wtf was that??

Ok watching your reaction made me realise that I have a seen a cut/censored version... There was WAY less weird stuff happening the movie that I saw, and I wasn't sure why everyone said it was so crazy. Now I understand :D.

"WHY IS THIS NORMAL?! Oh, they're just folding sheets". "Oh, is this like Simba?" 😂 Can't believe I forgot I've seen this movie. It's pretty accurate, by the way. Average midsummer in Sweden. And typical reactions from foreigners. You get used to it all, it's pretty great. I'm hungry now.

10:35 "Yep I felt that I'm not looking are you... OMG why was it so graphic? Oh, I looked at the wrong time I looked away then I looked back at the wrong time why why why no!" LMAO Ari Aster knows what he is doing. Doesn't want anyone to miss being traumatized.

Your reactions when something weird happens are the best. So funny! Watching a horror movie with you-and may it be the scariest shit- makes me die laughing every time. You're the only horror movie reactor who manages to do that. You're amazing! I remember laughing the whole reaction of the movie " Rec " and that one is also far away from being funny, but your reactions and comments are simply hilarious! Greetings from Germany

What disturbs me the most is that - as in almost all horror films - the main actors behave casually, as if nothing serious is happening, while in reality after the first attestupa ceremony their only idea would be how to stay together and make a plan to leave. They probably wouldn't succeed, not even to kidnap the high priestess because the cult would know that their escape would mean the downfall of the entire cult, but at least they could sell their skins for a higher price.
