I love that they showed the head because the director said he does not like it when horror movies let you "off the hook", like, as if we were to follow around this woman's trauma of finding her dead daughter like voyeurs while also being spared of the visual - the same way Peter doesn't look, it's almost like it didn't happen if we don't look at it. So it's one thing to KNOW she was killed, but to suddenly cut to the head being eaten by ants while we still hear the mom's reaction to finding the aftermath is making us face the full weight of it all, the same way she has to.

I literally had a small panic attack in my living room, I had to pause the movie and compose myself. The reality of the accident happening. Driving back home in silence, knowing your life will NEVER be the same and just accepting that you can't sleep this one off. Tomorrow the sun will rise and the nightmare didn't end. Literally made me sick to my stomach, it was even hard watching this reaction.

I had to pause the movie because I had to take in Toni's acting. Lol. I was taken out of the film, in full appreciation mode. I talked with my dad and my brother about it, like "how did they get her there emotionally? Was she okay after this scene? How does Ari Aster do this?" Then we pressed play. 😂

In my opinion it's the greatest depiction of shock and extreme grief in the history of film. It just doesn't relent or allow you to escape by quickly moving on to another scene. You're forced to wallow in it and truly consider just how horrific something like that would be. It's like the movie is saying "yes, we know you seen that sort of thing in all kinds of horror films but really, REALLY consider what it would be like if that happened. In fact, we're going to give you 5 minutes to consider it while we spend that time totally rubbing it in your face."

A few things that you may have not seen or dots you may have not connected: - Annie's shadow on the floor has no head (when she's walking in the corridor while following the ants); - The man who smiles at Peter is the exact same man who smiled at Charlie during the grandmother's funeral; - The kids at the party are watching an old silent film with a man getting decapitated; - Peter sees his own smiling face in class. It's not a random smiling face, it's the "fcking face on your face" and smearing face her mother apparently sees in the dinner scene; - When Joan approaches Annie at the store, you can see the chalkboard in her trunk, even though she said it belonged to her grandson. Nope, she just bought it! - Right before the shot of Peter in bed and Annie in the high corner of the room, there's an establishing shot of the house at night. In theaters, I didn't catch it at all, which is funny because the screen is huge, but... the shot is FILLED with people everywhere And there's SO, SO much more. It's the hidden things that truly make this movie even more unnerving

Piggybacking on this but also The black herb that is in Charlie's baby bottle and Annie's tea at Joan's house is "Dittany of Crete", a herb known for making the body more susceptible to demonic possession. And Peter's friend in the ponytail is seen bowing at the end.

The ending confirms that there was no mental illness at play, in terms of DIDs, that is. Annie’s brother was misdiagnosed, reasonably, because no one was going to believe that what he was experiencing was real. Remember, Annie explains in group that her brother thought his mother was trying to put something inside of him, which was true. Paimon needs a male host and so a first born son would have to be sacrificed. Annie’s mom, Ellen, was the coven leader and had to be the one to make that sacrifice. But upon her son’s suicide Ellen tries to latch on to Peter when he’s born, but remembering her brother’s words about their mom, Annie doesn’t let her get close and so she instead gets close to Charlie and has Paimon temporarily enter her body instead. How Toni Collette didn’t win an Oscar or even get nominated is criminal and only proves how under appreciated the horror genre is.

And Annie also subconsciously knew about her mother and what she was , which is why she tried to kill herself and her kids in her sleep. This is also pretty much explained in her dream sequence with lines such as "why are you scared of me?" and "I never wanted to be your mother", "I tried to stop it" followed by them drenched in paint thinner. Deep down she knew her son was meant for evil, so she was either afraid of him or what he would become. In addition, notice when in that subconscious state she goes after the kids and not the husband, which reinforces the idea that she knew the only way to end her mother's plans was to kill the children both current host and the future one. This is one of the best horror movies ever made, so much subtext and hidden details in everything.

I agree with what you said about the mental illness part. I think Annie's father starved to death because the mom tried to put Paimon into her husband and he realized what she was attempting to do and he stopped eating and drinking in order for the possession to be unsuccessful.

@@calvintyler9281 The director has confirmed that there was a Charlie, at some point, but soon after birth, she was possessed by Paimon, so we can assume that whatever the actual Charlie was, died a long time ago, but Paimon was inhabiting her body for most of "her" life. In one of the pictures in the album, one can see Ellen giving Charlie a baby bottle, but we can see green stuff in the bottle, which is the plant the cult uses to make people susceptible (I forgot the name of the plant), which is the same plant Annie consumes when drinking the tea Joan gives her, which is why from that point forward, she starts being susceptible to the paranormal things happening around her

I think this film and The Babadook do a great job of showing grief and hopelessness in very real and surreal way at the same time .. both very emotional films and what a bold choice to tell those stories and explore those emotions through the lens of horror. Going in blind for the theater premiere was unforgettable. The theater was DEAD SILENT. Not a wrapper crinkle or a drink slurp to be heard. Idk how Ari Aster can capture that visceral, gut-wrenching, awkward feeling of loss and guilt and miscommunication. When Annie is screaming at Peter during the dinner table scene, I still sink in my seat like a child being punished. It's like being at a friend's house when their mom starts yelling at them × 1,000.

Hereditary is way more horrifying and difficult for me than Midsommar. Midsommar, I think, is scary because it happens in daylight, and you see the indoctrination of a very vulnerable person into a cult. But on a personal level? Hereditary hit very close to home when you focus on the family drama. Aster really nailed the fucked-up family dynamics, which makes it hugely uncomfortable for people (including me) who have deep, familial trauma and a history of mental illness. It's that generational trauma with a hint of demons sprinkled in.

One of the more painful things about the narrative is the sentiment is that Annie and Peter are actually quite alike. It's why they're able to rile each other up so well. And it's sad because you can believe her in the nightmare when she screams that she loves him, but things are too far gone by that point.

The scariest part of the dream around 20 minutes is that line after Peter asks why she tried to kill him. "I didn't, I was trying to save you!" It's like on a subconscious level the mother knew that her family was doomed, to the point where she unconsciously tried to burn her family to death to spare them of the coming horror (it was such a strong urge that her body literally did it for her as she slept- it was their one way out of this). This is perhaps the only movie where the happier ending would have been for the main character to murder her entire family, because if she did they wouldn't have succumb to the horror of the cult's wishes. Just goes to show how fucked up this movie is.

Well, O thonk, that the point is...: Annie's mother was in this satanic cult. Who is the devil? The great DECEIVER. Father of all lies. Point: NO matter WHAT this family tries, they WILL be destroyed, because they let Ellen doser thing AND never were practicing Christians. (Of course not, then this story wouldn't end like this, duh)😂 But, IF you curse yourself by joining devil-worshipers, it WILL backfire, EVEN on the innocent ones, if they are not prepared. We actually get to understand, that EVERYBODY around this family are affiliated with this cult. That is why they all show up at the end, because they know, that the curse/wish has been fulfilled! Yu can actually SEE, when the soul leaves poor Peter, after he jumps out of the window !😮😢 I actually thought, O was going to pi** myself, when decapitated Annie floated up into the treehouse. 😂 I was just scared to my wits end. It IS a complex, scary film with some MEGA-FANTASTIC performances in it. Toni Collette needs that Oscar.

This is my favourite movie because it works on so many levels; grief, anguish, trauma, family... how things like mental health can be hereditary BUT at the same time, those mental illnesses in the family were caused by ritual that cursed them... that curse is also hereditary. And Toni Colette legit HOWLING like a broken mother chills and disturbs me a million times more than the visual of poor Charlie.

This movie got under my skin so much more than Midsommar. It's very much half a movie of dealing with grief and turns into a deeply occult movie. I was speechless when I saw it at the cinema but it stuck. Toni Collette and Alex Wolff really should've got Oscars for their performances here. The soundtrack and their performance is insane.

It’s interesting to see people talk about this vs Midsommar because for me Midsommar was so much more deeply disturbing. Maybe it’s just because I saw Midsommar first and it desensitized me a bit to this movie. Something about Midsommar not having any actual supernatural elements and just being a bunch of ultra fucked up humans doing cult shit and Danny falling into it in the end just left me so disturbed feeling for a long time after. With this movie I don’t really feel it even though it was great and really well acted.

I think the mourning aspect of this movie is what makes it the most disturbing. It has great scary parts but the mom's screams after Charlie dies are the most terrifying to me, they haunted me for weeks, it just HURT. Toni deserved an oscan for this. Also, don't know if you noticed, but in the support group Annie talks about her brother who offed himself at 16 and left a note saying his mom was trying to "put people inside him" oof imagine what that boy went through. Whats most scary about this film isn’t the Demons, the gore or the jump scares…its the depression and hopelessness the characters be able to feel as the film goes on. Watching a family be completely ripped apart and then devoured in the end. One of the greatest horror films ever made. Acting, cinematography, score, plot, all top notch.

The way I describe it, it's Trauma Horror. The gore doesn't faze me, it's the trauma. This is easily the most upsetting film I have ever seen. Midsommar opens with the trauma, but it's there like a backdrop. Like a set peice. Everything takes place in context of trauma and loss.

So a few things: 1. The clicking has a few theories behind it. Mine is that it's Paimon "speaking" in some capacity, hence why we see everyone possessed by him do it and why multiple characters hear it. 2. Alex Wolff and Toni Collette gave two of the best performances in modern horror. Genuinely amazing work on their ends. 3. That shadow moving after Peter jumps out of the attic isn't explained as far as I know but I've seen people argue (with me agreeing) that it's Peter's soul leaving his body before Paimon inhabits it.

If you ever feel like watching this movie again, there’s all kinds of foreshadowing that you don’t notice the first time. Like the cult members around the house basically the entire movie. You can see them breathing outside the windows in the cold. And when the family comes home from the funeral at the beginning, you can see their footprints around the houses first floor.

Such well written characters. The dream sequence between Annie and Peter is my favorite of the entire film. I feel like I don't hear enough people talk about how tragic it is that Annie was subconciously always trying to save her children from this fate without even really knowing it, that the only real way to protect her children would be to kill them as Paimon had already rooted into their entire family.

Toni Collette's performance is the obvious highlight of the movie, it's outstanding. However, I can't help but comment on Alex Wolff's (Peter's) performance as well. He did such a fantastic job with this character. He made me feel so sorry for him, his trauma, his guilt, his depression, the desperation of seeing his mother “going insane” and feeling like it's his fault. The scene where he runs into the attic and Annie starts banging on the door is haunting for me; he just sounds like a scared little boy, begging his “mommy” to stop. It breaks my heart every single time. He's a great actor.

Every single detail of Hereditary is so perfect, it really keeps you wondering if it's real or not up to the end. Every sign of a demon or curse can also be attributed to psychosis. Swarms of small insects, pulsing/shifting lights and fire are all common visual hallucinations (as well as people staring at you). Possession, cult conspiracies, and believing you're a "chosen one" or the only one who can stop an evil force are all common paranoid delusions. When it's established that her family has a history of psychotic disorders, she's established as an unreliable narrator-- and as soon as Peter starts showing the same signs, he is too. We can never really trust that what they're seeing is real-- or if it is, that we're seeing a reasonable interpretation of it. If it weren't for the seance with the dad present, I don't think you could really say for sure that it was actually a demon. There are three other movies with a similar thread that I highly recommend: Donnie Darko, They Look Like People, and The Block Island Sound.

I just love Ann Dowd (Joan)...she's one of my favorite actors. I don't know if you watch TV shows, but if you enjoyed her performance, you should check out The Handmaid's Tale. She plays a great character in that show as well - a real nuanced villain. There's five seasons at the moment, and I've probably rewatched the whole series 3 or 4 times by now. Elisabeth Moss plays the lead and just demolishes your face every time she's on screen lol

What happens in Hereditary is basically the same as any other possession film. For a demon to take a host, the host needs to be frightened to such an extend that he has an out of body experience. Basically, you become so scared that you lose your mind for a brief moment, as we see Annie do at 31:30 Charlie was most likely scared to death by her grandmother and her "friends", and so became the first vessel for Paimon. When she dies Paimon no longer has a host, so Joan tricks Annie into summoning Paimon back again, this time to finally take over Peter's body. But Peter is too emotionally strong, mostly thanks to his Dad always supporting him and showing him love - 26:48 Joan is literally telling Peter to stop resisting and give up his body to Paimon - so instead Paimon goes after Annie who is much more vulnerable, and through her, traumatises Peter to such an extend he jumps out the window. But we can see Peter fighting up until the very end, when he slaps himself and take some deep breaths in order to alleviate the fear 34:54 16:16 Yes, Annie is using her art form as a coping mechanism. It's a way to control your emotions by reliving the trauma in small increments rather than feeling everything at once, which is obviously overwhelming. If she as a writer she would probably write a book about her family. The scene you see the beginning at 5:20 was a miniature Annie made trying to cope with her mother attempting to take over her children.

I didn't get into horror movies until my teen years, which consisted of mostly the classics. This was the first modern horror movie I saw in theaters and I don't think any horror movie has stuck with me like this one. The way the tension starts building the second Annie tells Peter to take Charlie to the party and just continues to slowly increase all the way until her death. Then you couple that with the fact that her death is simply a false climax to that sequence, because the second the movie makes you think it isn't going to show you the aftermath, the tension begins to ramp right back up because you realize it's building up to Annie finding the body and therefore the TRUE explosion. Pure horrific perfection. Her screams after all of that caused such a sudden and involuntary desire to stand up and walk out of my theater out of pure horror and discomfort. Toni Collett was ROBBED of an Oscar.

Have you thought about the incident she told Joan about? Where she was sleepwalking and almost burned her kids and herself. Maybe that was one from the good side guiding her to prevent the manifestation of Paimon. Paimon probably guided her to dig up both her mom's grave and Charlie's in one of her sleepwalking states. This is a unique movie. It is incredibly well crafted: the story /allegory, acting, atmosphere, sound design...it's really well crafted and probably deserves more awards than it was afforded. Is it a good movie? Well, it's difficult to recommend to others and while I am glad I watched it, I don't care to watch it again really. lol I don't enjoy downer movies/endings but jeeze, talk about an experience!! Even seeing some of the scenes in this video gave me chills again. Although I did watch it twice. Once by myself and once with a friend to not only see his reaction but to experience the movie knowing I'd have a different perspective. I was stoked to see you dropped this and was looking forward to watching it after finishing the day! During the Halloween season, I was playing a bunch of horror movie themes for atmospheric spookiness, when I stopped dead, profoundly disturbed and completely uncomfortable. I realized the ending theme from this movie was playing, so even without knowing, those trumpets and synths blaring bring it all right back in an instant. I love when music and cinema work together to create lasting impact.

The end might be a little confusing. Paimon was originally meant to be placed into Annie's brother, but he killed himself. Annie then had Peter, and kept him away from her mother. However, Annie let her mother see Charlie, and the cult decided to place Paimon into her instead. They realized that was a mistake, because Paimon preferred male hosts and he would be displeased once he fully realized his identity and power. Charlie was marked to die, although it was a very roundabout way of getting the job done. It seemed like a lot was left to chance or "fate," but it happened. Charlie was never really Charlie. She was actually Paimon the entire time we saw her, but *he* was experiencing life in a human body, one with many weaknesses like food allergies. Joan explained to Peter/Paimon that he was, in fact, King Paimon, and called him "Charlie" because that was the name he was called for 13 years. It's heavily implied that being placed into a human body either confuses and/or disorients the demon. He might not recall past lifetimes or being a King of Hell whatsoever. Hence the need for Joan to explain it to him. As for the corpses. These were sacrifices required for Paimon's transition and possession to be completed. Three sacrifices, three heads; the grandmother, Annie, and Charlie. Which most likely symbolizes the maiden, the mother, and the crone; three major life stages of womanhood, three goddesses. Paimon is depicted sitting upon a camel and carrying three severed heads.

well that was fun, wasn't it ? 🤣 btw yes, the supernatural stuff actually happens, that's the twist, it wasn't mental illness running in the family, it was grandma doing demon stuff. If you listen when Annie tells in the support group how her dad and brother died, grandpa starved himself, probably because he found out what's going on with his wife and couldn't put up with it anymore, and Annie's brother (grandma's firstborn son, perfect candidate to be a host) hanged himself because he said grandma "wants to put people inside of him" sounds like possession ? Annie subconsciously knows this, that's why she didn't let grandma close to Peter and also why she wants to "save" her children ... by killing them when she sleepwalks, because even death by murder is better than becoming playthings of demons. Even thou all this, in the end (probably because guilt tripping) she let Grandma close to Charlie, and grandma used Charlie as a host for Paimon, this explains her weirdness and why she decapitated the bird, also the clicking sound was meant to be an indicator to show Paimon's presence, this is why in the end when Peter clicks, it's the movie's way of telling us, the transition of Paimon from Charlie to Peter was complete and successful. The bad guys completely won, rarely ever happens in movies
