Nice video - I recognize the Captain. We used to handle them when they did the STN-LSI-FAE route a few years ago

I'm from Shetland and this was fantastic to see a Scandinavian pilot landing his plane here. Hopefully it's a sign of the future...... I'm surprised they landed on that runway - the longest runway at Sumburgh is another one which you can see out the front right side window(look for the rock armour) at 2.55 and is at sea level. Apparantly, Sumburgh airport is knows as the "aircraft carrier"(for obvious reasons!). I think this flight was from the Faroe Islands last year.

Great video, I love your coverage of "unconventional" air routes. Certainly the approach to Sumburgh is very unconventional, as seen by high terrain surronding the final approach and the last minute turn to put the airplane into finals...

Stunning video! The lighthouse view is awesome. Great briefing, great CRM and approach, equals great landing. Thanks for sharing.

@EliteSoldier777 he says 'bug' I think. The 'bug' being a little marker on the speed indicator set at Vref (Approach Speed). So it's telling the PF how far from the that speed he is. The PF lands at exactly Vref by the sounds of it, so a good landing! Great Video!

They are so happy with their jobs he told me if you ever fly to the faroe's just ask to come visit the captains, its not like USA threats cockpit is closed all the time, they are happy trusting people.

why the landing gear is so noisy when it goes down?
@Ab1234ify8 жыл бұрын
Once the landing gear is put down, it resists to the fast moving wind due to the airplane flying. In other words, what you hear is the wind hitting the landing gear just like if you pull your hand out of the car's window.

Well, I thought his landing technique was a little less than perfect. The captain let go of the control column the moment the wheels were on the ground and grabbed the steering tiller (at the side of his left knee) leaving the column to its own devices. Hope he doesn't do that in strong crosswinds! The 146/RJ should be controlled directionally on the ground by the rudder until speed has reduced and rudder effectiveness lost. Interesting to hear the 'bug speed plus...' calls on short finals. We never did that in my airline except possibly when flying a flapless approach where speed control is much more critical. Icarus14627 (now retired but 5000 hours on the 146).

Hi, I am not a pilot but obviously you are. I thought that the flight yoke was for controlling the aircraft in flight and during landing and take off. WWhen the aircraft has settled on its landing gear surely the pedals then control the rudder down to nosewheel steering speed which is why possibly he let go of the yoke. I would be interested to know if this is so. Thanks.
@RB747domme7 жыл бұрын
The captain didn't let go of the control column. The first officer took the control column and pushed it forward to keep the aircraft on the ground, whilst the captain steered the ship - this is common practice. You ought to know that. With airports such as this, with tiny runways and easy ditch roll offs at the end, it needs two pilots basically to make sure that the tiller and the rudder flap combination is being taken care of at its fullest concentration.

so funny how he says Sumburgh wrong lol
@Trollberg60north10 жыл бұрын
It does sound kinda "quant" but it's also how most of my Faroese friends would say it. I guess they're just pronouncing it as they read it and that's no different to how most Shetlanders would mis-pronounce the Faroese place-names. For example, their airport is on the island of "Vágar". Now, 99% of Shetlanders would look at it and say "V-a-g-a-r" but it's actually pronounced "Vo-ar". Perhaps we should re-instate the old norse name of Svinborg/Sunnborg. :)
@SimulationandAviation10 жыл бұрын
I must try and practice :) Thank you though.. :_)

As if this was the most important thing about this fantastic video and landing. BTW, What is the "correct" pronunciation? The "Oxford English" one? I doubt!
@Trollberg60north10 жыл бұрын
Simulation and Aviation No, no my dear friend!. The way you pronounce it is actually more correct!. "Sumburgh" is an english corruption of the original and better name of "Sunnborg" which means the "south castle/fortress". :)

My only criticism is that the pilots did not deploy the thrust reversers. But on the other hand, this airplane does not have thrust reversers, so I guess that is a moot point. It does have a really cool airbrake, though, much like the Fokkers.
