Can a case of Noctua fans make the difference in saving work from home sanity? Vince is a creative pro working to edit our video masterpieces, but he also has a day job as a digital imaging tech. He works from a home office/living room, which isn't always the most desirable spot to manage a noisy rack. Not to fear, our friends from Noctua are here! They've supplied a ton of those lively brown fans to see if they can save Vince's sanity!

You might get the noctuas working in the switch by pulling the PWM-pin (blue one) out of the fan cable connector, RPM should still be reported and they should run at 100% :)

That rack like like a clone APC Netshelter CX :D I have one at work. And fully closed when is near me it limits noise quite well. maybe taht APC doesn't have as good noise damping as in APC And i think there are less fans and only on rear.

This is an awesome video I have though about doing the same thing especially in my Dell T410 I put one in my QNAP box and I cannot even hear it, Noctua makes a great fan and cooler which is what I have on my desktop, I really enjoyed this video!

Sadly my Synology RS2416+ does not accept Noctua fans. I have bought Noctua fans for it, installed them, but later found out that the drives (and CPU) were getting too hot and it would go into turbo mode, making it louder than the 'quiet mode' with the default fans. I took the Noctua's out and installed the default fans back. I did install a 40mm (non-Noctua) fan on top of the heatsink for the CPU though, and it's connected to a DC-DC stepdown converter. Keeps the CPU nice and less hot. I've also modded my RS2416+ quite a bit, because it was a RS+ in it's previous life. I've swapped the PSUs with a 500W FlexATX (500w, because of the 5v amperage that's needed in that thing for some reason), then it complained about the PSUs not being there, so I swapped the boot module too. Now it's a less powerhungry and more quiet system. I swapped the PSU for multiple reasons: 1. Those fans were DC without RPM sensing, so 100% at 100% of the time. 2. The PSUs weren't Gold+ rated, so they weren't really efficient (dropped down 30w with switching the PSUs in general usage, because the PSUs were getting really hot). 3. I don't really need redundancy anyway. Most of my gear is connected with a single PSU and it's all on an UPS anyway.

yo be fair, Vince is our video editor so if he did light his own gear on fire he might have edited it out. He's much more vindictive with other people's videos.

Ya switches are all quite tricky. Even if they have what look to be standard fan headers, often they aren’t. Or they use 5v instead of 12v or some variable voltage instead of pwm. But you still can make things work with some cleverness and maybe a few false starts. But 40mm fans are hard to move any air thru, esp with hotter modern switches. I’ve found noctua fans work, but you also need to add some(hot glued or the like) inside blowing at the cpu/phy heat sinks, SFP cages too. That’s usually enough to make the noctua-ization work. There are also some 40mm silent fans on Amazon/ebay that work better at 5v (but still 12v fans) than noctua and run silent. Not just a quick swap but can make switches waaaay more silent if you are clever.

8:57 may I ask what model of fan did you use for the Synology Rack? Are they NF-A8? I tried to use them for my RS2821PR+ but they are not responding to DSM fan settings and always causing my drives to overheat 😢
@StorageReview
@StorageReview 5 ай бұрын
I used the NF-A8FLX, which was fine for the drives but i swapped one of the original fans back in for the CPU, since it kept complaining about temps, even though they were under 60C. - Vince

Can I ask for the supermicro on what fan mode did you set your fans. I am stuck with an epyc 7551p with a Noctua cooler running on full Speed and when I switch the fan mode to optimized it start raving up and down. And supermicro doesn’t seem to have a solution.

12:45 - could it be that the Switch has some issues with fans spinning at low RPM ? I see that the original ones are spinning at 5.5k and the Noctua ones are at 1.9k RPM.

So a video specifically making something quieter but... we don't have decibel readings before the fan switch and after the fan switch... You don't even take those multi-fan panels and compare them side by side with the replacement fans versus the original fans... And there's music playing over the whole thing so we can't hear the difference?
