Shia Muslims in Iraq marked Ashura by performing various rituals in the city of Karbala. Ashura is observed by both Sunni and Shia Muslims, but is seen as a day of mourning for Shias as they commemorate the death of Hussein, Prophet Muhammad's grandson, in the Battle of Karbala.

He even used to tap his thigh and his chest as he cried and said: "oh Yousaf! Oh Yousaf!" Just like today we do "Ya Hussain, ya Hussain!" And do you know what the Quran says about the prophet Yaqoob? Quran says that Yaqoob was "the most patient one". Hence, we are NOT deviated, we ARE on the right path. And you should do it too. Imam Hussain was slaughtered and massacred unjustly. He is a martyr of Islam and he saved Islam. He is the reason for which people like you and me are able to pray 5 times a day till this era(21st century). That's why in our Adhan, we mention Allahﷻ first, then the Prophetﷺ and then Ali(a.s.). *4-* We never changed anything. While returning from the Hajj with 100,000 Muslims, the Prophetﷺ himself announced that; “After me, Ali(a.s.) is your leader as I am your leader”, in the year 632AD. Look it up, this event is called “Al-Ghadir”. And so, the Islamic faith was then completed and concluded with Ali(a.s.). In fact, it was Umar Ibn Khattab who ordered to include the phrase, "prayer is better than sleep" (Assalatu Khairum Minan Naum) in the Adhan at Fajr. This phrase was not part of the Adhan (calling for prayer) during the time of the Holy Prophetﷺ and it has been included in Adhan later by Umar. He made unlawful changes to Adhan. Have an answer to that?? *5-* Who said joining prayers (i.e., ‘asr & dhuhr and maghrib & isha’) is wrong? We all pray 5 prayers a day. The Prophetﷺ himself used to pray all prayers individually and combined also. This practice came from the Prophetﷺ! Then who dares to say it is wrong? This is the reference: Sahih Bukhari. Book 6, Hadith no. 109. Translation: *It was narrated from Ibn 'Abbas that the Prophet(ﷺ) used to pray in Al-Madinah combining two prayers. Joining Zuhr and 'Asr, and Maghrib and Isha', when there was no fear nor rain. It was said to him: "Why?" He said: "So that there would not be any hardship on his Ummah."* *6-* It is HIGHLY encouraged to put our foreheads on natural soil or dust when performing prostration/sajda to really humble yourself in front of Allah. The Prophetﷺ used to pray on natural materials. The prayer is more rewarding that way. That “stone” you are referring to is not actually stone, it is made up of raw soil. Now-a-days, Muslims either pray on carpet, velvet, marble or tiles, etc. They don’t put their heads on natural dust anymore. But we Shia put this ‘mud piece’ on the prayer mat, so our foreheads meet the natural soil when we prostrate. It is also called “Sajdah Gah” meaning; 'place of prostration'.

We listen to Ali, abu Bakr, uthman and umar (may Allah be pleased with all of them) because they followed the teachings of rasoolAllah (saw). Yes rasoolAllah (saw) asked us to cross or leave our hands open during the salah, you can read your namaz either or ways. The ummah practically slaughtered the righteous grandson of the prophetﷺ and many other family members of the prophetﷺ,, and they did it in a hurry because they wanted to pray the Asar prayer. Why would we ever let our grief lessen? This is NOT going to happen. In every gathering we practically pray to Allah that may Allah never lessen this grief in our hearts! We do not want peace. We want to remember that occurrence forever.. that's why we commemorate and mourn for imam Hussain, year in year out. Every year, we want our grief to increase even more. We want to keep reminding ourselves of the tragedy that happened to the household of the prophet by the hands of ummah, and remember to never become like those so-called Muslims. We are angry at why something like this had to happen. We want to prevent the future tragedies from happening to the 12th imam. This is wrong? Bro, the Quran verifies it. Remember, in Quran, when the prophet Yousaf was separated from his father prophet Yaqoob, Yaqoob(a.s.) KNEW that his son is not dead and is alive. Still, the prophet Yaqoob cried day and night for his son Yousaf for many years that he *literally* became blind. He even used to tap his thigh and his chest as he cried and said: "oh Yousaf! Oh Yousaf!" Just like today we do "Ya Hussain, ya Hussain!" And do you know what the Quran says about the prophet Yaqoob? Quran says that Yaqoob was "the most patient one". Hence, we are NOT deviated, we ARE on the right path. And you should do it too. Imam Hussain was slaughtered and massacred unjustly. He is a martyr of Islam and he saved Islam. He is the reason for which people like you and me are able to pray 5 times a day till this era(21st century). Imam Hussain deserves to be mourned and cried upon more than anyone in this universe. Allah loves the cry of a person which is raised in the pain of the oppressed. You should also cry for imam Hussain. The reward for every single tear is ENORMOUS.

But actions done in love make worldly rules irrelevant. For example; one time after the passing of the Holy Prophet(p.b.u.h) Imam Ali (a.s.) was presented a sharbat/juice to drink. That juice is halal of course. Imam Ali asked; "Did the Prophet (p.b.u.h.) ever drink this sharbat?". The answer from the other person was "No, the Prophet(p.b.u.h.) never had this drink/sharbat". Then Imam Ali said; "I don't want to drink this sharbat if the Prophet never had this". That sharbat is halal, but Imam Ali refused to drink it out of love for the Holy Prophet because he missed him! The islamic shariah law became totally irrelevant here. Another example; A young man named "Owais Qarni" was in love with the Holy Prophet but he had never seen him or met him. The young man had only heard about the prophet. He came to Madina in hopes to see the Prophet, but Prophet wasn't there so he left. Then later he heard a news that the Prophet lost one tooth in battle. That young man, when he heard this, broke all of his teeth in the love of the Prophet. He thought about the pain prophet had gone through and wanted to share the pain of Prophet(p.b.u.h.) for himself. When prophet returned to Madina, he smiled and said I can smell the fragrance of Owais Qarni that he visited here. The Holy Prophet(p.b.u.h.) knew about Qarni and his love for him. He told Omar ibn Khattab and Imam Ali about Qarni and told them to go meet Owais Qarni after the Prophet’s departure from the world. The prophet directed Omar and Ali: “When you see him, convey to him my salaam and ask him to pray for my Ummah.” :) Similarly, one should not fight with his wife, but if a couple fights and argues, and give each other space for the sake of ease, chill behavior and love, this is not against shariah law. But it is in fact encouraged! The mourning over imam Hussain and hitting ourselves is for the sake of love and commitment. The commitment to the love for the Prophet's beloved grandson! The Prophet never condemned Owais Qarni for breaking all of his teeth, Prophet appreciated his actions and devotion! I hope you'll be able to better understand it now.

Shia explanation: Prophet Muhammad (saw) said before he died that if he does die, that his cousin, friend and son in law Ali ibn Abi Talib had to become the next caliph. But then sunnis said he didn't say that at all and blah blah blah. And then Abu Bakr (La'anatu 'llahi 'alay-hi) became the caliph and killed Ali ibn abi Talib. Then their was a battle between sunnis and the son of Ali 'Husain'. Because Yazid (La'anatu 'llahi 'alay-hi) told imam Husain that he had to pledge their allegiance to him, because Yazid (La'anatu 'llahi 'alay-hi) became caliph. But then imam Husain said that he would never do that, because he wanted to uphold the right of the people to choose their leader. So that's when Yazid (La'anatu 'llahi 'alay-hi) started fight with imam Husain. So ofcourse imam Husain had to defend himself and his family. So that's when he and his family got killed expect for the women. But Yazid (La'anatu 'llahi 'alay-hi) still tortured the women and took them to jail.
