Totally disagree lol. I think they should take a page from Elite Dangerous, because this was something they got pretty right. 1. Distortion damage is the only damage that can trickle through a shield, to temporarily disable a component. 2. Ballistic can't go through a shield and get a 1.25 to hull damage. 3. Put different types of shields in the game. Elite has 3 , prismatic,bi-weave and standard. So this translated to which strategy do you want to use? Maximum shield hp (but will not get them back if they go down), lower shield hp but t ability to regen after going down. (So you would use them as a buffer but accept the fact you would take hull damage but be able to regen them and time your pushes) , or somewhere in the middle. (Take longer to go down but with flying defensive can regen them in a fight). 4. Put engineering in the game. Give us the ability to augment shields to our playstyle more. (To what degree I am unsure) but something like adding 10% disruption resist or whatever damage type. Or 10%faster regen etc etc. 5.possibly think about adding shield boosters that are a flat increase to shields but bigger shield means slower regen. Then add smaller engineering buffs to those to further augment play style. 6. Shield cell banks make alot of sense. It replenish shields but say it cause Distortion damage to your ship at the same time. Something like that I think would be a great starting point. The caveat is ED shield values are way to high, so you would need to watch the actual pool numbers but if you keep that in check I think it would be good. Shields stop all damage (so managing shields is a skill in itself) Add different types of shields. Add engineering. Possibly boosters. Shield bank cells. Distortion becomes a wild card.(it's random penetration could possible shut down your shields all together. I dunno just seems to make sense to me.

I can see why people like ED for refence but like you say its values are very high, I think it feels to bullet spongey, so I would still prefer the version from the video, but not bad suggestions :)

while this works for elite, SC has more options and abilities based on the system functionality that CIG built out. Why would they just copy elite now? Totally negates the complicated systems that CIG built out. We need to let CIG cook, they are trying to dial these things in, and they need us to play so they can collect data.

I'm not saying directly copy ED (even they could and it would be fine) I'm saying the concepts are there and they are good. Since they killed dog fighting, they definitely are going to have to do something with the shields.

@MotherNature26 There simply as far as engineering to get around ED. More dmg, more range, more hp , more cooling , more cool down, more ballistic/laser/explosive resistance, change fire rates or fire patterns etc etc etc etc... They have done it all already. My original comments were aimed at shields.... Repair gameplay really doesn't matter to the engineering discussion. Again, unless you come up with engineering stats no one has heard of they will be doing the same thing ED already did. It would be wise to take what works from that and put your own twist on it .. -But- I don't see them doing engineering all that differently anyway......

I kinda agree. Unless you pretty much destroy the ship, shield emitters shouldn't be completely taken offline. Maybe for a time or maybe with one accurate pass, shields stop charging to full and instead go to 50%? A second pass causes them to go into a cooldown phase where they won't replenish normally. At this phase, you have to remotely repair and recharge them. Which means you have to divert power from say, some turrets or directly from the engine to "reboot" the shield generators. I think the only case where they should be permanently taken down is from either direct damage to the power supply, or a soft death. And even then, if you have the necessary components on hand, they can be repaired. If you don't, you're kinda screwed until you get to a repair station.

Of course you need to be able to shut other people’s components like shields down. That ties into engineering, it’s not too specific at all. Knowledge of where to shoot and the skill of being able to hit them is essential to a high skill ceiling in this game

In space there shouldn't be damage loss due to distance, because there aren't really forces working against your projectiles. Missiles probably should ever lose damage over range, the only lost energy there would be the fuel and that's not what does the damage anyways. The damage model is going to change heavily when the game shifts away from it's temporary hitpoint system into a system more like War Thunders. Ship armour will matter. Something they do need to do is change how shields regenerate, a Hornet should never be able to get through the shield on a large ship alone, you're shooting pebbles at a mountain. But maybe ship armour will be the answer there, small gauge guns won't have the impact to damage heavy armour, comparable to shotting a handgun at a tank.

CIG introduces shit like drink and food, but cant get the servers run properly, fix the damn bugs or get any balancing done. Coregameplay is completely missing. They really set the wrong priorities.

Between these terrible shields and the nurfed ship speeds many are not very viable to fly right now. 400i is a great example.

I have been playing space games since the 80's. I am now convinced they have no idea what they are doing behind the scenes. What is this game trying to be? I'll tell you what. Star Wars Galaxies. Another failed space MMO. This game is doomed for failure. How do I know? Chris Roberts is not uniquely different. Turns out space games are rather boring because space is just that. Boring. Little tweaks and changes are not going to fix what ever they are trying to do. They have no rudder. No end goal. No real plans to ever go 1.0. Do you really see the game going mainstream? I just do not see it. Why? When you die you might as well just log off. Finally, it is clear as day they are no longer building the game for PC.
