This is a video about replacing the Shift Cable on a 2007 - 2014 GM truck. I bought Upper and Lower GM Shift Cables from the Dealer for under $100.
Make sure you save the metal retainers from the old cable. They do not come with the factory cable.
Feel free to ask questions in the comments below.

Great video, you are the only person who has done this. I literally just did this whole job yesterday. Some notes from my job: Yes you absolutely can get both cables apart, actually quite easily using a small pick to pop that little copper clip out, just use extreme care as it goes flying. Then squeeze that clip back on with pliers and you can install the new cable. those cables are much cheaper online, rockauto has the lower one for $29, genuine gm.

That is great. Did you separate the cables while the upper was still in the car? Or would you recommend removing the whole assembly to attempt that? I don’t remember seeing anything but Dorman for my model when I looked. That is great that rock auto has it, I couldn’t wait that long.

You can do it with the upper cable in the car. You can pull it down enough to work on it.

Great video. Just did mine tonight. I bought both cables ($140 GM) and was only going to replace the lower, but both the internal brass clip and the outer plastic retaining clip at the junction broke on me. So I ended up replacing both. In hind sight, I recommend just replacing both in the first place.

good informational video. it’s “easy” to disassemble the lower and somewhat on the upper but feeding the new upper through the back steering column through metal bracket is difficult. yes it can be done but removing is far easier than putting in new one. plus, just bc you have new one installed and connected doesn’t mean that the shift will be right. you’ll have to adjust tension which is tedious to get right so it will shift through all gears and return to park. on its face it is a easier job but by no means is it not not difficult. good luck. i’ve done this job many times on GM’s and can be trying at times. good luck

Thanks for the video. Agree that little brass clip is a pain. I can’t believe that holds the 2 cables together. I ended up buying both cables ($130) from GM dealer. Should have just ordered the bushing from bushingsfix for $30. Did that on my 2006 envoy and it is much easier than changing out the cables.

late to the party but the OEM cable that connects to the transmission is $50. I figure the difference is not that much compared to the bushings and now i'll have a new half of the cable that gets exposed to much higher temperatures that close to the transmission. thanks for the video @jimvia76

Great video This cable really just the bushing I think broke in the drive-thru at a restaurant on me today I was lucky enough to be able to go under the vehicle and just manually put it back on and be able to drive it home thinking maybe I had just fixed it thought I would try the vehicle again later in the afternoon but had already popped off again. Debating about just buying new bushing for underneath the truck but don't know. Not so much worried about the money Just worried about the zero mechanical experience might be easier just put the bushing on and not replace the whole cable. It seems to just keep falling off at the bushing under the truck

just go to the dealer and get your upper and lower cable its much easier to replace .the end result is smoother shift which is like back to new . its not hard to do yourself quoted 450-600 by the dealer .it took me 45 mins to do myself and im good .

On this year/generation but the newer body style that steering bearing at end of shaft requires cutting the end of the guard off that has the curly wire cable retainer on it. The steering bearing will NOT slide out without cutting it off. The old could be just tapped out but not the 07.5+ far as I can tell. I did a vid showing it since NOBODY had any info on it. I'm now replacing the whole column and cutting that off before installation of the column.

My lower cable won’t push all the way into the upper cable so there’s like a little more tread showing then what the original looks like. Is this okay or will it mess up or something?

You can connect the cable together, but don't push down the plastic retainer in the middle of both cables until you have both the shifter and the transmission in park

HELP! I have a 2011 Chevy Silverado, I recently (yesterday) replaced the lower shifter cable although I know it’s recommended to change both but I’m tight on money, anyways New lower cable in and I’m still not able to shift passed reverse. Sometimes not even. It’ll stay in park and my shifter is completely free to just fall down and not change gears…

pull out the plastic retainer between the two cables so that it does not engage the threads. Put the transmission in park so that the driveshaft does not turn(rear wheels off the ground). Put the shift lever in park. Push in the plastic retainer to engage the threads. You should be good to go.

When I put my truck in gear it still feel tight and will move but it’ll randomly act like it’s in neutral is that needing the cable changed? When it does that I can wiggle the cable on the transmission and it’ll start working for just a minute

1. Those bushings will fail, read the reviews. Replacing the cable is the right way. 2. You wont break anything if youre careful, all you need to remove is the sill plate and the piece under the steering column. 3. You dont need to replace both cables, you can get them apart you just need to be careful
