How did I originally miss this video? I loved Peter Beard so much. Can't really put it into words. I remember when he was "lost" and everyone in Montauk went looking for him. I felt somehow that it was so apropos that he decided to go off into "the wild" in his own way, just how he knew in days past like the animals to perhaps meet his own death. I felt pretty gutted when he passed away, the world losing someone truly unique and special. I've been looking for a documentary about him with no real luck. Amazing you have that print of him with his writing. What a true treasure to hold!

He was a unique dude. Doesn't get some of the credit he deserves due to his lifestyle but he was an involved guy

Excellent synopsis of Beard's hypnotic classic. The one you're reviewing is the 1988 revised and updated second edition, the first was published in 1965. The journal entry you reference at 15:10 is actually that of J.H. Patterson (author of Man-Eaters of Tsavo) who wrote of his pursuit of the two man-eating lions that terrorized railway workers constructing a bridge over the Tsavo River in 1898.
@DANIELMILNOR5052 жыл бұрын
I love that Tsavo story. Not great for the locals involved but such a statement about man and nature and the explosion of the developing world. Beard, at least in my circles, is known more for the crazy lifestyle and large works, but I went to a Frans Lanting lecture once and he was the only person I've heard say "Beard put down the foundation for conservation photography."
@raptorphile562 жыл бұрын
@@DANIELMILNOR505 My former girlfriend attended a Frans Lanting workshop a couple of years ago in California and told me when she returned--knowing I was a huge Beard fan--that he mentioned Peter Beard's role as a conservation photographer and boom....my opinion of Beard as a photographer was instantly validated!

Thanks for the introduction to Peter Beard. I read 'Out of Africa' many years ago and had a brief visit to Tsavo on honeymoon (also many years ago!) so have a sense of familiarity with the subject. This book looks to tick a lot of boxes in terms of my interests so I have just ordered a copy of the 50th Anniversary edition as a birthday present to myself 🙂

I found out about Peter Beard through your website several months ago. Without exaggeration, that discovery changed my life. I ended up reading Dinesen and Darwin and studying the paintings of Francis Bacon. My journaling (not even in the same ballpark as Beard's, of course, but useful for me) took on a new life and importance. As for Beard himself, it's striking and exemplary that he was always and forever focused on his subject -- Africa -- and not himself -- as remarkable a man as he was. So, thank you for the introduction to him, and thank you for this video. (Still, is it really a Daniel Milnor video if it's in color? Hm.)

Maybe it is me...or maybe it's....not? Yes. Your point is key. He lived an insane life but his work was about OTHER things. Not him.

Amazing. The End of the Game was the first "photography" book I ever purchased. I vividly remember opening the book for the first time and being in awe of Peter's images - unable to turn the page. It ultimately inspired me to volunteer at a national game reserve in Kenya. I wasn't into photography at the time (regrettably, but was journaling!), and now here we are, more than 10 years later with Peter's name coming up in my favourite photography channel. Thanks Daniel.

Keep em coming Dan. Loved this one. You exposed me to Beard a few months ago and I’ve been hooked on knowing more about him and his work. Well done on this one for sure!!

Hey Lucas, glad I was the one who exposed you to Beard. I thought about this after I did this film. I never spoke about the paper, the binding, etc. Or the images for that matter, at least not in-depth, but he was about the message so I felt it fitting.

I see a lot of him in Nick Brandt's work on African wildlife as shown in the books ' On this Earth' and 'A Shadow Falls'. Is he one of the photographers you were alluding to at the beginning of this video?
@DANIELMILNOR5054 жыл бұрын
Actually no but I do know Brandt's work. I was referring more to the people who steal from his journal work. Sometimes it's so obvious, but young photo editors, art buyers, etc. often don't seem to know of Beard.
@veryjr29664 жыл бұрын
Yes- the subject matter of the book in review is captivating and Beard‘s foresight back in the days remarkable. However, I am equally drawn to his layout / journal / collage style. And don‘t slaughter me - there are some worthwhile rip offs out there such as JOURNALS OF DAN ELDON published 4ys after his untimely death in 1993. Consistently high quality you put on to you tube. Go for your own channel rather than AYP !
@DANIELMILNOR5054 жыл бұрын
I've got my own channel but it just isnt' a priority now as my job keeps me fully busy. Yes, you could see the influence with Eldon. I met his mom and sister after his death. Nice people, for sure. Sad because he was destined for good things.
