Shifter change BMW 5-series E61 LCI

How to change cobra-stick to BMW E61 LCI -2008. This video shows hot to uninstall and install automatic transmission gear stick on BMW E61 LCI.
Only mandatory tools are torx T20 and T30. Pliers, screwdriver and flashlight might come in handy.

Your oil filter o rings are hard and your oil filter is plugged probably I had both those problems

Hi, i just wondering, if i just want to take off that silver joystic plastic part 08.30. Do i need take off a whole part as you shown in video ?

Probably not. It's been awhile since I did this so I don't remember exactly. There is a collar that you need to pull down, if I remember correctly and pry the silver part off. But like I said, it's been awhile and I don't remember how it exactly was.

Remove that black collar and pry silver trim carefully off. Install is the same process reversed.

Where did you buy the new one at at the dealer?

I don't remember exactly where I bought the new one. It came from someone who did not need it. I remember that the original part would have cost about €1000 at BMW service, but this was significantly cheaper even though it was an original part.

It's been a while since I made this change, but as far as I can remember just pull the collar down and then pry the trim off carefully.

How do you know if the shifter is bad

In my case, I didn't know and in fact, there was nothing wrong with the shifter. I changed it because the transmission mechanic recommended I change it. In general, if have symptoms with the gearbox then you might want to try and replace the shifter. In my case, symptoms were fixed with a software update done by BMW.

I didn't have any errors. I changed it because gearbox repair man recommended to do it before updating transmission software. In this case I think that changing the stick was vain. But I got some experience of changing it and this video to share 😀

Pull the black collar down and carefully pry the plastics open.

@@rampantking777 If I remember correctly that button is part of the stick and probably won't come off without breaking something. If you wanna paint it, just remove whole shifter and cover the parts you don't want to get painted.

Great video - I need to change the gear selector switch on my 2008 528i - it looks like the same exact setup. How did you avoid needing to recode or reprogram this component? My understand was that it needs to be reprogrammed, but maybe not? Also, did you replace with a new unit or a used unit? Do you know if it makes a difference? Thanks!

As far as I know, this is just a electric stick. It does not have anything inside that would require reprogramming. I did not reprogram anything and selector has been working ok ever since. I replaced old one with completely new unit. Overall this was not too difficult task to do. My advice is to use common sense and be careful not to break anything since almost all the clips are plastic and they can potentially break easily.

@@PJKuona im going to be doing this to my bmw 535i 2008. I have an issue where the car will shift into drive and reverse but it wil not shift back into park. It inky shifts into park once i turn the car off.
