First of all thank you for the great explanation. If x(t-τ) is shifted function with respect to t, what is the nature or name of the function z(τ) ? I see also it's shifted and flipped.

An example is a delay in a transmitted signal, between transmitter and receiver. Or in a radar signal, between the transmitted pulse, and the returning, reflected, pulse.
