2020 Volvo S60 Review: Does Volvo Make The World's Best Luxury Sports Sedan?

Ask the general public, "what luxury sports sedan should you buy?" and the response will likely be "Something German." Some of the more well rounded might suggest something from the UK, Italy, Japan or even America. Most people wouldn't dream of suggesting Volvo. Volvo has a reputation for being extremely safe, and a bit quirky. Sport is something Volvo hasn't done much of in recent years.
Enter the 2019 Volvo S60 R Design. It does everything you want in a luxury sports sedan. It's comfortable, has good looks inside and out, and is sporty. It does have good enough numbers to make you wonder if it is the best all-rounder in the luxury sports sedan scene.

I have an S90 T5 for a little over a year now, I just love it. I agree both S60 and S90 are the best-looking sedans available, although my heart also beats for the Cadillac CTS and CT6 as good looking sedans.

NO, that's STILL the P1800 Seriously, apart from the headlights and the tail lights, this is just an updated S60. And with no manual gearbox, not really worth bothering with. Volvo geartronic gearboxes are not that good.

I own a V50 T5, which has the legendary 2.5 liter Turbocharged Five Cylinder motor fitted, and it's a fantastic car. It's comfortable, practatible, drives really well for a front wheel drive car, is safe, and has more than enough usable horsepower (217) It's my everyday driver, and frankly, I don't see the need for any more horsepower or torque, as it's perfectly adequate for every day commuting, along with the odd trip? I, when it comes time, will be replacing it with another Volvo, they are great cars.

I have the exact same car (2005 V50 T5 FWD with the M66 manual gearbox) and I absolutely love the thing. I will drive that car until the wheels fall off, then bolt new ones on and do it all again. It's fantastic. Volvo for life!

My 96 Volvo 850 T5 seats are still the most comfortable seats ever made and still maintain their shape after all these years. With the low profile tires and the ever growing potholes, it doesn't matter how good the suspension is you'll just end up bending rims!! I wonder how good Volvo support will be in a few years for the gas powered cars when (as promised) they will be switching over to all electric cars. I agree with Shifting lanes that the S60 R is a great looking car. I worry about all those sensors they stick in today's cars and by adding all that HP to a 2 liter engine. I think I will still stick with my old 850. I have no interest in electric short range cars.

i love the new volvos, their whole lineup is by far the best looking inside and out... and i know autos have come a long way, but a manual should still be in the lineup, even at a premium... ive never understood why they havent gone full CVT on the transmissions so there is no laggy gearshifts, way more efficient and always at the peak torque when you need it.
@ethixhiggins5059
@ethixhiggins5059 5 жыл бұрын
Do they have these transmissions dialed in? Ive seen alot of the pre 2011 Audi's with cvts have alot of issues. And the 2013 sentra. Cvts definetly feel and work amazing but is the reliability there and dialed in? Curious because i dont know much about these new cvts
@dankrafted
@dankrafted 5 жыл бұрын
@@ethixhiggins5059 they've been around for years and years, they were banned from F1 in the early 90s (so they can be designed to take the torque), every twist and go scooter has one, so im pretty sure they can be made reliable... i think the reality is the manufactures thing people like haveing gears, or cvts cost too much compared to conventional autos. i'd still take a stick shift over an auto though, i just feel disconnected in an auto.
@vomErsten
@vomErsten 2 жыл бұрын
@@ethixhiggins5059 There are no Audis with CVTs. In fact, the only brands you will find CVTs in come from Japan or Korea. Audi uses a DCT or traditional torque-converter automatics. Both have gears, but the DCT is effectively an automated manual that can clutch out of one gear while clutching onto the next. Volvo uses a torque-converter automatic; the Volvo automatic is dialed in if you let it shift on its own but it's absolutely worthless if you want to use the paddles to shift your own.
@vomErsten
@vomErsten 2 жыл бұрын
@@dankrafted Building a CVT that can take the power luxury cars are expected to produce would be expensive. It would also be sluggish to shift and can never be as snappy as a properly built and programmed torque-converter or dual-clutch automatic since it has to glide the drive belts around, and that is an inherently slower process than simply grabbing a plate or disengaging a clutch pack. To truly benefit from a CVT you would have to leave it in automatic mode and let it adjust the drive ratio as you accelerate to seamlessly keep the engine in the ideal rev range for what you're asking it to do, otherwise you are wasting the one thing a CVT is better for. This behavior in and of itself would turn off a lot of luxury car buyers because the engines would drone instead of sing up the rev range.

@markkibbe1802 5 жыл бұрын
What does India have to do with it? Volvo is based in Sweden, run by Swedes, owned by Geely, a Chinese conglomerate that basically just gives them money and watches them succeed. The engines are built in Sweden, and have nothing to do with China (or especially India). Plus, as has already been stated, the supercharger is used as boost fill to provide low end torque while the turbo spools, so there is very little lag.
