Lots of spot on info. Only addendums I'd make are avoid early 6cyl 960s with block porosity issues and short cam belt life. Fixed in 94 iirc. Same for gen 1 s40s, too many unusual issues like non-removable relays in CEM killing headlights, plastic upper rad hose union exploding with no warning, or ECM monitors that are very stubborn to pass if you live in an emissions inspection state

How did i miss this video 4 years ago.. I also want to add that if youre buying a Diesel from 2011 and forward. DONT buy the D2s and D4s, they are infamously unreliable and you will have problems with your car with those engines, if you want a diesel, take the D3 or D5 options, the D5 is great powerwise but does ofc drain your tank abit faster than the D3 does. But the engines are reliable and a helluva fun experience in the long run!

Now I recently got a pristine 960 wagon (same year model) with the 3L in-line 6 engine that will be my next daily driver when I need extra space. The 6cyl in the 960 was the first "white block" and came before the 850 came out. The 850 didn't fit the 6 cylinder so they had to design a 5 cylinder version because they deemed a 4 cyl variant would not be sufficient. Sequence is different and the base engine was the 6, not the 5 cylinder.

I really appreciate Adrian's input. My first experience with Volvo was a 1974 164. Aside from parts rarity the tranny was a dog. The 6 cylinder was nice. Although I had to find a distributor for it and I ended up building a distributor from the old and the used one. The true headache was the throttle position feedback electronics. The rest was reasonable maintenance. I was married to it from 1981 to 1985, lol.
