I drove a similar 5x3 for several years. Later on I took a drive test for a company and they had an old Pete with a 4x4 they used for parades. They tried to play a joke on me by making me take my test in that pete. You should have seen the safety guys face when I drove it like I knew what I was doing LOL.

Watch his hands. It’s an old horseshoe 9 speed Starts in lo then goes through 1,2,3,4 on the bottom end Preselects hi Pulls it into 5th Moves the aux from OD Lo And splits 5th with LO-DI then 6th LO-DI 7th LO-DI 8th LO- DI- and finally in double over If you wanna get technical he’s shifting like a 16/17 speed. Splitting the top end....

This setup came in handy with the D8 the boss owned for road building. When hauling logs I left the brownie (auxiliary) in under, used the main box till I got up to speed then used the brownie. Now I drive a 2018 KW hauling logs.

Looks to be a 9 over, should be the same ratios for the older transmissions regardless of tq rating. I was going to put a 4 speed behind my 9 speed direct in a truck and even with the 3.90 rear ends it was going to be very long legged, so keep that in mind.

@timgreen41376 жыл бұрын
D J Tanner Don't need to really keep track. Just listen to the engine and go up or down a gear depending on what she needs.
@hoost30566 жыл бұрын
It's all about feel. No trucker once they learn the vehicle uses all the ratios in the transmission, you skip around depending on the load and conditions. The twin sticks just give you more options and unless you heavy haul ( and I am talking super heavy stuff ) you don't need them. This truck is overkill with gears.....and that makes it cool.
@rudybriscoe36975 жыл бұрын
He doesn't talk on the phone
@StumpyVanLife2 жыл бұрын
I know I am replying to a 4 year old comment, but what the heck. He has a 9 speed main transmission and a 4 speed aux. Most twin sticks were 5 speed main and 4 speed aux. Main transmission the gears are numbered just like you expect 1 thru 5. The auxilliary transmission you name the gears. Deep under , under , direct , and over. So whatever gear your in with the main , plus what ever gear the aux is in. lowest possible gear is 1st deep under , highest gear is 5th over. Your only supposed to use deep under to get moving, once you start progressing thru the gears you do not return to deep under , you go back to under. Progression usually goes like this. 1st deep under , 1st under , 1st direct , 1st over , 2nd under , 2nd direct , 2nd over , 3rd under , 3rd direct , 3rd over , 4th direct , 4th over , 5th direct , 5th over. Notice once you get past 3rd gear you don't use under anymore. You can but I have always heard not too, overlapping ratios. going from 3rd over to 4th under would actually be a downshift in most cases, or just the same overall ratio. 6 x 4 setups have a slightly different progression that I am not familiar with. I never drove a 6x4 only 5x4. I would love to have this 9 x 4 setup!!

@sabrinacordell62906 жыл бұрын
9 over 5th is against the dash. And a 9 progressive you pull the selector up in 4th instead of 5th
@StumpyVanLife5 жыл бұрын
In a 9 speed or 10 speed when the shift pattern is reversed between 4th and 5th (and also the top two gears) then it is an overdrive. The actual arrangement of gears on the counter shaft does not change between direct transmissions and overdrive transmissions (for the direct gear). It is the gear opposite of direct that changes. So in a normal 9 speed 4th gear is an underdrive gear and 5th is direct. In an overdrive transmission 4th gear goes from an underdrive gear to an overdrive gear, so the shift progression changes because you would not want to go from 3rd gear straight to an overdrive gear and then back to a direct gear. Wow!! I think I just confused myself!! Lol

Why is there a splitter lever on the one stick?
@Zeviander6 жыл бұрын
George Elliott Its a 9 speed main box. Has 5 low forward gears and 4 high. Lo is bottom left, 1 is middle up, 2 middle down, 3 bottom right, 4 up right. Pull range valve, 5 is up middle and carry on same as low range. 4 speed auxiliary box (the long stick with a bend) is the "overdrive" box. A 4 speed auxiliary box tends to have 2-3 overdrive gears and 1-2 underdrive gears. Once you get into high range, you can start splitting them into smaller ratios. Like a modern Eaton 13 speed.
