Shilo Sanders filed for bankruptcy in October of 2023, years after a Texas court judgment against him where he was ordered to pay more than $11.2 million in a personal injury lawsuit, according to US bankruptcy court documents. Westword reports this is related to an alleged attack in 2015 on a security guard named John Darjean from Sanders' high school in Texas.

OK, props for the news crew for not speculating or going for the shock 'gotcha' news story. This was simple straightforward news reporting... this is what happened today, this is why it happened, this is what happened earlier. This is the kind of reporting that used to be the industry standard, the kind that isn't afraid to say 'we don't know' and leave it at that. As for Shilo Sanders, in my opinion the attack on Dejean must have been pretty severe for a Texas jury to award the plaintiff that much money... especially against a football player. As we all know, a star football player can literally get away with murder in Texas. I hope Dejean gets every dime he's owed.

@@00kt86 Fair point. From what I've seen, most local news agencies are more 'just the facts, ma'am' than their national agency. All news agencies in all media have always had a problem with the 'if it bleeds it leads' principle in journalism. The blunt fact is that most people like an outrageous headline. And we have always had to choose our news sources carefully. I tend to look for a centrist or non-biased [less-biased?] sources in my news. I usually look for the most local source first, then I hit Associated Press for my national news, and Reuters for many international stories.

@@jinxterpinxter Hey, MSNBC and CNN are equally as full of crap as FauxNews. This isn't just a right wing or conservative phenomenon. There used to be an FCC regulation called the Fairness in Reporting Doctrine that required all broadcast news [radio or television] to report the news in the above manner. The Reagan Administration did away with it and soon after FauxNews was born and CNN took such a hard turn to the political Left that it left skid marks. When it comes to news reporting and the credibility of journalism, that incident was just as damaging as the Citizens United Decision.

Dude, this lawsuit was filed over an incident that occurred when Shilo was 15. The high school security guard attempted to take his cell phone, but a struggle ensued and the guard claimed that he was permanently injured and could no longer work. Obviously, the guard is still following the money. His parents should have closely monitored this case until it was settled. The kid lost the case by not appearing in court. That's what happens when you or your attorney fail to appear! Hopefully, the guard will settle for $2-$3M.

This falls squarely on the shoulders of his parents! As I understand it, Shilo and his parents were all sued by Shilo's high school security guard, who alleged that Shilo age 15, at the time, injured him after he attempted to take his cell phone. Recall, Shilo was the child caught up in the custody battle. Deion allegedly instructed the school to take Shilo's phone to keep him from talking to his mother. The lawsuit against his parents was later dismissed, however, the case was not dismissed against Shilo. The case went to trial when Shilo was 19 years old, unfortunately, neither Shilo, his parents nor his former attorney attended the hearing, therefore, the Defendant WON THE CASE BY DEFAULT! I'm guessing the Sanders family thought the security guard would just disappear, therefore, why continue paying an attorney?? MY question is, Who would put the responsibility of defending himself in a civil trial in the hands of a knucklehead 19-year-old??? Like I said, his parents dropped the ball and now Shilo has to pay! I suspect the former security guard is waiting to see if he gets drafted???

According to the innerweb, Sanders was on in-school suspension (a gift he did not appreciate) when a security guard told him to relinquish his phone (his attention seeking lifeline). Sanders chose to instead to break the guard's neck and leave him with permanent neurological damage (because he doesn't acknowledge limits and has no words). Anybody that has seen the video would have to be a fool to blame him. He is at school, the guard walks by and says something, which we now know he was telling him to get off his phone. The guard keeps walking, then comes up and grabs Shilo from behind, and takes him down. He controls Shilo the entire time. Now he claims he threw his back out when taking Shilo down. It is complete nonsense. The guard clearly overreacted, and it does not even make sense that his reaction would be to grab a 15 year old and take them down to begin with. Think about it, an adult tels a kid to get off the phone, that kid keeps talking, and with zero warning at all you come up from behind and take them down. Then you blame them because you got injured. Somehow he got people to agree with him. His claim was if he would have gotten of the phone he would not have had to take him down, but why would you need to grab and takedown a kid for simply talking on the phone? He clearly overreacted. The video does not even match his claim, and somehow he still won. I haae seen the video several times, and it is just a guard grabbing him, taking him down, and holding him down. The guard created the situation.

Most school systems dont allow adults to lay hands on students. Upon resistance to turn over the cellphone the security guard should've reported the matter to the school office and let them handle it. Why create an altercation unnecessarily? I think the judge could have handled the case better.
