One of the best battlefield videos that I have seen. Laying out the geography, with streams, roads and features help in understanding the ground, and why the CSA ended up in clockwise rotation instead of a counter-clockwise rotation away from Pittsburg Landing trapping the Union against Owl Creek. The Battlefield Trust has made some recent videos that also show why the ground dictated the CSA deployment instead of Beauregard’s original battle plan. I especially appreciate the zooming in and out for context. I am now a fan, keep up the great work.

Excellent presentation. Having visited this battlefield on several occasions, this is best explanation of a very complex battle. To those haven't been there, this is, or was until the mid 90s, the best preserved major battlefield of the Civil War. When walking the trails and following the audio guides, there is no visible modern intrusion, no power lines, highways or even paved roads, buildings or other, distracting, modern crap. The absence of those distractions allows us to fully focus on and appreciate the magnitude of the struggle. lf this presentation could be incorporated into the battlefield guides, it would be a perfect complement to an in-person visit.

Thank you for this brilliant summary. As a Boy Scout in the 1970’s I spent days and nights at the battlefield, not knowing at that time that my great, great, great grandfather had been a casualty there. He absorbed a rebel bullet, returned to his Kentucky home, and died the following April. He died from the war, not at the battle. This is a beautiful summary of (at the time) America’s greatest tragedy. Thank you for creating, summarizing, and sharing.

I’ve been to the battlefield a few times. I’ve also slept in the house that was Grant’s headquarters following the battle while the army recovered. It was owned by my aunt and her new husband. The diary of the woman who owned it at the time is on display in the parlor, and they gave tours in the spring. The original dining table was there with Grant’s cigar burns, and the nicks from Sherman’s sword are still on the banister of the stairs. He beat on the banister with his sword to piss off the owner. It’s all in the diary.

As an aside, my ancestor was wounded on the first day and lay outside in the rain overnight in enemy territory; he was recovered after the Union troops retook the ground and was invalided out. Lucky not to be captured like many others of the Hornet's Nest soldiers. He went to quite a few Shiloh reunions in subsequent years.

Absolutely outstanding presentation. You have a new subscriber. Up until Shiloh, both sides and their civilian populations had not fully grasped that the war was going to be one of huge armies taking the field, wielding thousands of troops firing rifled weapons with high caliber low muzzle velocity mini balls that created gaping wounds and shattered bones, along with massed artillery sending grapeshot and cannonballs at close range. There wouldn't be just one decisive Waterloo. There would be multiple non-decisive Waterloos -- Shiloh the first, then Antietam, Chancellorsville, Fredericksburg, Gettysburg, the Wilderness, the March to the Sea. Shiloh was a shock. But the shocks continued as the maimed and the wounded and the dead mounted and mounted and mounted over multi-day battles as the lines ebbed and flowed from attack to retreat to attack and again and again. Remember the conversation between Grant and Sherman after the first day of Shiloh? "Well, Grant, we've had the devil to pay." Grant's reply? "We'll lick 'em tomorrow." The tomorrows looked like they would never end.

I have a stupid question - why do we have so much information about every detail of this battle? What are the documents that show that level of detail?
@JeffreytheLibrarian Жыл бұрын
Excellent question. Each officer on both sides from regimental command and up filed reports explaining their orders and actions. These officer reports are how we know the details, combined with the fact that there was a living memory of veterans through the 1930s that provided oral history.
@Michael-iw3ek Жыл бұрын
@@JeffreytheLibrarian So in addition to tracking through mud under rain and getting their troops to fight, they had paperwork to cope with? Amazing. Makes sense, of course. You know, it would be interesting to see a video of what was the under-the-hood paperwork machinery like during war at those times - what orders were given orally, what was confirmed in writing, what reports were the officers required to submit and when, and provisioning and resupplying notes maybe. The more I think about it, the more I realize that there was a ton of paperwork; I see some examples of it in museums but it's kinda hard to put in context.

Great video. Unless you have walked the ground, it is hard to appreciate how difficult a place it was to fight between the woods and swales separating the occasional bigger farm fields. So completely different from Eastern battlefields. My great, great grandfather fought in the 6th Iowa which was the end of the Union right on the first day. I found a place in the woods where they held for over three hours in mid afternoon. There is a confederate burial trench in front of their position and a regimental burial trench behind (Union soldiers were later moved to the national cemetery) less than 100 feet apart. They were then moved in the late afternoon to support the guns at Pittsburgh Landing. After the first day they were so decimated that they did not fight as a unified commend but were parceled out to support other units. I have read his letters and he never wrote directly about the battle. But he did revisit it in the 1880s. Must have had a profound impact. He fought all the way through to Atlanta where he was either wounded or became very sick. Shiloh appears to be the only battlefield he revisited after the war.

It's very important to remember when you read about civil war battles that essentially every battle fought where in both sides absorbed heavy casualties should be counted as a union victory for obvious reasons. Even if the Union army was routed if the Confederates suffered anything close to Union casualty levels the Confederates had lost.

Confederate strategy had been to defend all key points and this resulted in many forces dispersed in small garrisons that were idle. Johnston had to convince Jefferson Davis that a concentration of all these idle forces was needed to strike a blow at Grant's army before it was united with Buell's army. The government finally realized it had no alternative. Credit to the Confederacy for achieving the concentration it did but the troops it missed most was the corps captured at Ft. Donelson which was needed at noon on the first day at Shiloh to have pushed the attack home against the Union left.

@@JeffreytheLibrarian be awesome if you could be there sir, understand if not. But with the reenactors, park service and the unreal support of the good local folks, we intend to demonstrate history to the best of our abilities. God bless you and yours sir.
